Neither do I understand the away goals rule which is used in the playoffs of the champions league. Why is a goal scored on the opponents home field supposed to matter more than a goal scored on your own venue?

That's pretty easily explained: The home field advantage.
Statistically the home team wins considerably more matches, and as such, it stands to reason that it's more difficult to score goals as an away team.
Yes, statistically and practically it is more difficult to score goals as an away team. But isn't it also more difficult to have a clean sheet as an away team?
If you would prior 'less goals against as an away team' over 'more scored goals as an away team', the rule would be the exact opposite.

Maybe not. I think the most natural thing would be to just add the goals together and apply extra time if both teams have scored equally many goals.
No team would want extra time + penalties, since those tournaments are within the normal season. Some players can't even compete in more than 1 tournament, because they don't have the endurance/recovery.
