The Runners thread

It was 12 degrees today, so I decided to take an easy long run for the first time since 3 months ago. I decided to run without my shirt, because it would get too hot outside otherwise. It was sunny outside the first 30 minutes and then it luckily became cloudy. After 33 km I got pain in my stomach and legs so I decided to run back home so that it became 35 km. The furthest I had run without stopping before was 30 km. I think it took me almost 2:45. Before I went out running today I had only been drinking a glass of water and not eaten anything. Now I feel more excited to run a marathon this year and aim for a time under 2:40.

So impressive with runners who runs 800m under 2 minutes, I would be happy if I just managed to run under 2:20.

Thanks Smile

On the other side I would love to be able to run the marathon in 2:40. Will surely attempt in 5-10 years but until now I never ran more than 20 km in one run. Good luck!

^ Nice going, sssj. I am going to start the longer distances myself soon as I usually keep to around 6 - 11 miles on my own. Could I ask what type of route you go along (urban or scenic countryside) ? Smile

Relating to the previous page - don't know if any of you do Parkrun* or have it in your countries? It is basically a 5km race around a park: as I don't have Strava or anything it is the only way I can accurately record my time on a specified distance. Been fortunate enough to win the first three times I have entered and a new PB each time - 16:55. 16:38. 16:27. Definitely feel I have a sub-16 in me.

Going under 15 minutes has to be the long term goal there, very long term goal though! Anyhow Parkrun is definitely a great fun initiative to get all sorts of people into running/ healthy living: with so much obesity around we need it!

I always run on gravel/dirt roads along the water. It is 2 km to the water, but I run slightly longer so that I only run on gravel/dirt roads, because it is softer to land on. Then I mix running on the 2/5/10 km long laps. Sometimes the roads go besides smaller roads for cars for a few 100m, but it is mostly trees on one side of the road and the ocean on the other side of the road. There are a lot of people walking/running on the roads there. It is very motivating running past other runners when I am tired. My easy pace is 4:20-4:30/km and usually I run 16 or 22 km. It has only passed 1 week of the summer vacation and during the summer I will try to make my easy jogs to be 22 km more often. I will try to do more long runs during the summer vacation which is almost 3 months long, because I will probably be tired when the University starts for the first time for me.

I wish I could run 5 km in 16:30 soon. That is probably needed to be able to run 10 km sub 34. I want to improve my PB on 10/HM which is 34:33/1:16:22.

I returned to road racing yesterday. Ran a mile road race that had a net downhill and finished 3rd out of 250 running a 5:08 Smile

Glad you think so! Hopefully as the summer comes along I can improve on these times and get in better-better shape/ join a club. - Well, Shonak, when I joined this forum cycling was my go-to hobby, now that has been eclipsed by running. (And ,with many others, when I joined this site I only thought I'd be around for one or two posts so not much thought went into my username!) Pfft

- sssj - thanks and sounds beautiful. Wink This time of year really is the best time for me, everything is growing so for most of my runs I am surrounded by lush green on one at least side when in the country. Also it is light to about 22:00 so evening runs are more so on the cards, which am I going to have to do more of - other day I encountered a party of foxes and a cuckoo calling, which really enhances the experience for me. #epicnature!

- jseadog - Yes! Smile

I know what you mean, Runner. Since I moved places I hardly have time for the bike, a fast hour of running is always possible tho. Even late at night it's still possible to do some Ks to sweat a long day out. Nonethless, I use my bike as a way of communting every day, do some seldom rides still with a friend. I hope I'll get to regular cycling training at some point again but right now it's not possible and living right in the city, it's also not that worthwhile.

A few days ago I saw a young bambi deer in my park. I watched it for a few seconds in wonderful disbelief and then tried to take a photo, before I moved it was gone already tho.

Awesome stuff jseadog, gratz.

Today the third National Championships at 10 km road was held in Sweden. For the first time in Stockholm, which is where I live. The start was 19:30 and the road was not very wide. I had to wait 5 seconds before I could start running. It was very hot with the 18 degrees and sunny. My favorite weather to run in is 5 degrees and cloudy. There was one very long hill at 7 km. My legs felt heavy and I finished almost a minute worse than my PB. I finished in 35:21 in 54:th place amongst all men. Halfway through the race I had 17:44.

After the race my coach said that he agrees with me being ready for a marathon this year. Now I am going to try finding a good marathon in Europe to run sub 2:40 this summer.

Not been running for 3-4 years really (not that I've ever ran competitively or something like that, just playing football and running occasionally at that point).

Been toying a little the various apps and I like Endomondo much better for running. The fact that you get km splits on the run is awesome, I would love Strava to have that feature since its better to have everything at one place (not that I am good at using it either..).

It was a casual 5 kilometre run and I aimed at 5.00 - 5.00 - 5.00 - 4.30 - 4.30 or something similar, so 24 minutes. I could possible run a little faster, but the last couple of weeks has taken its toll on my body.
I managed 5.02 - 5.18 - 5.04 - 4.36 - 4.19. I have never really ran after splits, but its just so much more fun to do it like that. I like the motivation.

I'd like to get down to 21-22 minutes on 5 kilometres. Considering I have been running on 18 minutes when I was younger, that should be possible, but damn, running feels so much harder than cycling.

I'm completely sure Strava has kms splits as well and you can see those live Pfft

They have, but Endomondo has some chick saying it in my earplugs. I just wondered whether that was a feature you could turn on/off on Strava since its super nice when you cant look at your phone while running

There's a live segment audio option (I imagine that's the thing you are looking for) but I havn't used it ever, so can't say if it's good or not.

I prefered the old strava running interface because you saw all segments in one immediate look. Now it just shows the last three kilometers.

Thanks.

When I am running at threshold, I seem to create a lot of spit. Its annoying since it interrupts my breathing quite a bit to spit every 0,5 km and when I don't, its Ten Dam-light. Any solutions?

Bump. Any endurance athletes recognise this?

I'm running with my mouth open and I have the opposite problem.

It's natural. Just continue running and you'll spit less the more you run.

Its funny since I haven't done it before. Maybe its due to me not being in super shape yet and perhaps pressing the limits sometimes, but for the love of god, I can't look like Ten Dam when I have mocked him consistently here through many years.

Well, I look like a mix of Mollema and Froome at whatever I do, so you can look like Ten Dam. grow a beard and look like Wolverine.
