You never know who will win before the race is finished. Giro this year is a good example of it. That said, there is no doubt that only crash can stop Froome/Armstrong/Indurain/Hinault/Merckx/Anquetil.

Didn't you watch last year? Only a crash could stop Tony.

You said that Contador had to be prepared not to crash, I'm not sure how this comes into it.

but while it has, Anquetil has been beaten due to bad tactics (Bahamontes won) as well as poor form (Gaul won) Indurain raced badly and lossed in 1996, Hinaultsean got tenditis in the year Zoetmelk won (1980 iirc), and Merckx has been beaten due to fans not liking him (1975) and Armstrong lost in 2009, so yeah, more than a crash can stop any of them.

Wasn't Anquetil worse than Anglade and Bahamontes though?
Also lol to Arberg. He should know how Anquetil lost 1959 and 1961 Giros. He should read those two Giros as well.

If that is to me then just lol.Anquetil came to 1959 Giro as 1957 TDF winner. And came 2nd to Gaul. Then he finished the Tour 3rd.And in 1961 he dominated the Tour after losing the Giro(which he was the defending champion) to Pambianco.

Mentioning Froome (and Armstrong) in one breath along with giants like Hinault and Merckx. Hilarious

Right now I talk with my brother about EM in football. Why do you want to know that?

How instead of babbling about race that's almost three weeks from now we could applaude to Steve Cummings for winning 3rd stage of a pro tour race this year. Now seriously, I don't mean it with sarcasm at all. Dude could probably be a constant top 15-20 rider in GCs of those races, but instead understands that's it's more valuable to save energy on other stages for glory moments like this. I take my hat off.

Yes, Cummings is a nice rider, I think most would recognise that. But this is a preview to a bigger show, its about the Maillot Jaune, the biggest prize in cycling, so obviously that will steel most of the focus.

Armstrong was the biggest Tour rider ever. 7 in a row in the hardest race to win on earth. I think he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with Hinault and Merckx. Smile

Not even close.
Armstrong was a TDF monster. End of the line.

Merckx, Hinault... were so much more. On so many different terrain etc. Classics, WC, NC, other GTs, monuments, other stage races...

Also just remembered that Indurain finished 1994 Giro(where he was the double defending champion) 3rd behind Berzin and Pantani. And guess what,he dominated the Tour that year as he won his 4th consecutive TDF.

Its subjective.

I don't suggest he is as good as them, certainly not Eddy, but he belongs in the 'same breath' IMO.

You say Contador won 7 GTs yet you say Armstrong won 7 TDFsRolling Eyes

Riis123
Its slightly different cases since they actually had a winner for the 2 GT's where Contador was stripped, but the winner from 1999-2005 is blank and therefore I consider Armstrong to have won them since I don't subscribe to the 'no winner' thing. Its a grey area and I suppose very subjective again.
