Welcome Arkadiusz. Must be one of the longest first posts ever here Pfft

Very good analysis. Agree with your points about Portugal. I really like their midfield cause it combines power, athleticism and workrate (Carvalho, Sanchez) and very good footballers in Andre Gomes, Joao Mario, Bernardo Silva and Joao Moutinho

Yes, you're right. It's a solid middlefield, one that we haven't had in ages, and I think that will be the key to our game. It's Sanches btw, Sanchez is spanish Pfft Glad to see that someone agrees with me.
When I wrote the other post I meant that, the fact that I AM portuguese wont influence my analysis and Portugal will still be my favourites. I think that after my analysis, it's a realistic objective. I'm not just saying that they will win, i am supporting it wih my explanation. Iam not spouting nonsense. Nonsense would be an irish guy saying that ireland will win just because...

I agree with you, but sadly, player of the tournament doesnt mean that england will win the tournament. No vardy no party though.

Those are my exact thoughts, England are my dark horses, their team has a big chance, especially as there is really no standout team this year imho, but yea in typical England fashion they will probably fall apart.

If Rooney is left out and Sturridge/Kane/Vardy get rotated I would bet money on England. But Hodgson is the manager so that rules me putting any money on that outcome Pfft

I like Fernando Santos, and his achievements with the Greeks were pretty incredible, but he's too pragmatic for Portugal's star players. I mean, think about it- Ronaldo might have to do some running!
Disclaimer- Most of my posts are me thinking aloud. And most of what I think is rubbish.

Sturridge is a major doubt. Squad is announced today so we'll see if Roy decides to risk taking him. Personally I think Townsend would have more of an impact as a sub, which is what Sturridge will be this tournament.

Marco Reus is out for the EC, due to injury and uncertainty regarding his recovery. Huge blow for Germany, and it increases my doubts about their chances for the tournament.

With Löw leaving Brandt and Bellarabi, two other offensive wingers, at home, I'm thinking it becomes more and more likely we'll see a back three. Something like this:

Gomez
Özil - Müller
Hector - Khedira - Kroos - Can
Höwedes - Boateng - Hummels
Neuer

Or alternatively

Gomez
Schürrle - Özil - Müller
Khedira - Kroos
Hector - Boateng - Hummels - Rüdiger
Neuer

with Schürrle and Rüdiger possibly being replaced by Draxler/Sané/Podolski or Can/Mustafi/Höwedes respectively.

All in all not bad, but not too impressive either.

Very unfortunate for Reus. Especially considering he missed the 2014 WC through injury as well.

England's 23 announced today as well. Praying Drinkwater makes it, but looks like he may be left out in favour of Barkley, Henderson and Wilshere. Says it all really for our chances, unwilling to pick form players such as Drinkwater who played almost every game of our title winning season.

Reus is a big shock for him the most, but also for the team`s quality.

Even more a mistake imo to also cut Brandt as I think he would have been a great addition.

Rudy was expected but Bellerabi as potential Reus backup is weird imo.

It`s 3 wings out then of the 4 cuttings. Though there are still like 10 wings left in the squad. Pfft

Drinkwater & Townsend cut from the England Squad.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Fraser Forster (Southampton), Tom Heaton (Burnley).

Defenders: Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), John Stones (Everton), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool).

Midfielders: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Ross Barkley (Everton), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), James Milner (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).

Strikers: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United).

Yep, as I predicted. Disgraceful from Hodgson but not surprising. At least Danny will be fresh for us for the start of next season.

TheManxMissile
Is it disgraceful? Wilshere hasn't played much but he showed he was ok at the end of the season and in training. Every day he'll get better and fitter and stronger. Plus he can bring a flair to the midfield that Henderson and Milner never can.
If the decision was purely on form Drinkwater would make it but that team would be very different in a lot of areas.

Sterling over Townsend i can also agree with. Andros had a great finish to the year but again Sterling just has that potential to do something amazing and he's constantly shown his relative consistency at International level.

Expect to see Rooney used in the midfield with those 4 other strikers coming along. That's a bold call given he's only played there occasionaly. But there's very few players in the world as determined as Wayne and you can guarantee he'll give 200% effort, just hope that can overcome a lack of positional experience.

That defence is just so questionable though... Dier must start in holding position and ideally one other player also sitting pretty deep in the midfield. Get Alli in to just run around like a mad man and get long balls up over the opposition to use our strikers pace.

Brandt was just a horrible mistake in my opinion, I hope to see him at the Olympic Games instead...

Bellarabi & Reus are out due to injuriey, sad stuff...Rudy due to being very average...

Podolski in the team is a disgrace for every guy hoping for a membership in the team...

Germany is lacking wingers that can kick the ball and go on 1-1 situations really - Sane is a purely overhyped mediocre talent that should´ve nothing to do with the team...

Neuer
Rüdiger - Mustafi - Boateng - Hector
Kroos - Khedira
Müller - Özil - Draxler/Schürrle
Gomez

I still don´t know how we want to win the EC without a leftbank and anything offensive on the bench (beneath Schürrle and Götze)

Especially missing Castro, Lars Bender, Brandt, Schmelzer and Hahn here

I was only speaking about Drinkwater. It's hard to argue that Drinkwater should be behind any of Henderson, Wilshere or Barkley in the pecking order, let alone all three.

Wilshere has had 1 PL start all season. Henderson has been out for a long period and has hardly pulled up trees in the Liverpool team. Barkley has also been fairly anonymous for Everton in recent weeks.

Drinkwater meanwhile has played an instrumental role in a title winning team, playing in almost every game and managing the most tackles by an English midfielder and 7 assists. Watching him regularly, he's been outstanding both defensively and in attack so I fail to see why he's not been included apart from him not playing for a so-called 'big club'.

Leicester were a team who did better then the sum of it's parts. England is not Leicester. Wilshere, Henderson and Barkley are all better individual players then Drinkwater and so should be in the England squad.

Drinkwater filled a role very well at Leicester. But there is a reason he has got to 26/27 without being noticed before while Wilshere, Barkley and Henderson were all touted a future England players when they were teenagers.

It's a bit of a gamble seeing as Wilshere and Henderson have slight injury concerns however in terms of quality it's Wilshere, Henderson and Barkley over Drinkwater any day of the week, week of the year or year of the century Smile

I read that again and again, and I strongly disagree. Especially for a tournament, you don't need the 23 best individual players. You need maybe the 15 or 16 best individual players plus 7 or 8 that add to the team with their experience and their character (or alternatively are there to gain this experience - like Sané or Weigl). I don't think any other player fits that role better than Podolski.

And of course there's the performance aspect as well, but Podolski played a really strong season in Turkey, plus his good shooting technique can make him a valuable substitute player (especially since we lack good finishing wingers as you say).

In general I think Löw has managed to assemble good squads with great team spirit (at least from what I observed), which cannot be underestimated in a format like the EC.

Germany and Spain squad's are really poor in my opinion. You could make a great XI out of players Del Bosque left out. Leaving out Saul stands out for me.

I hope Portugal wins as I always liked portuguese football and its about time Ronaldo wins something internationally. Hope Andre Gomes, Sanches, Mario flourish and RQ finds some vintage form.
