Who will be the next new Grand Tour champion and when?
dev4ever
Honestly, wouldnt mind Poels ditching the Tour and going for the vuelta as leader. The vuelta suits him much better than le Tour and he did great there in 2011 already. Now he seems stronger than ever and dutch riders seem to challenge for every GT now so..

The first non-GT winner per now to take le Tour will be Pinot in 2-3 years time imo.

This is more of a long-shot but I belive Diego Rosa will do a ''Landa-light'' and challenge for giro next year or the year after.

Of course nothing of this will happen though

I will be the next Grand Tour champion. Better look out, everyone!

Well single Grand Tour winners that can be lots of guys. A multiple Grand dominator though, hm.. I say Latour, and I'm only one third joking. Extraordinary talent.

He's a very good bet to win the Vuelta this year if you ask me. TDF will be tougher given the TTs.

I don't know why but i feel that Movistar will hold him back in some way from achieving his goals Frown

Yes and give Greipel 20 more Champs-Élysées stages and he have won last year itself.

But in the real world won Froome TDF with historical little ITT KM, give him more ITT and he wins bigger, although he obviously win no matter how little or much that is Smile

If you remember, Nairo lost time on a early stage last year. Not making excuses, he wan't paying attention when he should've been. Froome was. So yes, Froome did win with historical little ITT km like you say. And no, I don't think the TDF profile this year suits Nairo either.

"My next big objective from now is mainly the Rio Olympics. We will go to the Tour in order to support Nairo Quintana. I want to make it clear, from this very moment, that I will be losing time on the first week and take things easier so I can help Nairo out and give my best in the mountains. Also, if it's possible and it doesn't compromise the team's goals, I'd like to chase some stage wins or make it into the break and help the team from there. Our motto for the Tour remains the #SueñoAmarillo, winning the Tour with Nairo at last, and then, the Rio Games."

He has all the support he needs. I can't see why he would change teams

Is this Valverde's statement? If yes, I'd been hoping for something like this Smile

Is the question who will win there 1st grand tour 1st ?sorry bit confused people mentioned Froome .Quintana who have won at least one already.

The next champion, as in dominating GT's, the next winner of a GT or a somewhat underdog stepping up?

The question was who, besides Contador, Nibali, Froome, Nairo and Aru, will a Grand Tour next and when?

Conversations on forums have a tendency to deviate. Part of the package. All cool Wink

If I have to take a shot at answering my original question, I'd say either Landa at the Vuelta this year or Chaves at the Giro/Vuelta next year. Gut feeling saying that both Kruijswijk and TomaDuma have lost their best shot at a GT win with these last two outings.

Most definitely. You can find all his comments on movistarteam.com, worth a read Wink

And yes, thats exactly what I hoped for as well. No GC is best for everyone.

Tour parcours suits Quintana much better than the Vuelta if you ask me. The flat TTs in each are pretty much the same length but the Tour one is slightly hillier and I really don't see him losing much time if at all on the hilly TT in the Tour. Tour has way more mountains for him to gain time on, including crucially in the third week where he will most likely be the strongest, whereas the Vuelta has literally only three climbs that matter: Covadonga, Aubisque and Aitana.

Pinot, Aru, Quintana, Landa and Nibali should be winning left and right for next few years (after few more Froome Tour wins), but every year, we have some new prospect that can change that, maybe someone like Latour or young colombians or Van der Poel will mix it up.

And of course Sagan, when he gets fed up with classics and turn his point of emphasis on GTs. Pfft
I'll be back

Come on, Bardet to win the Tour by 2021! Cool

TimoCycling
My bet is on Dumoulin, Pinot, Chaves, Landa, Bardet, Kruijswijk.. Those type of guys have the age and potential.

Both the muritos, which I guess aren't muritos since they are relatively long, such as La Camperona and Pena Cabarga have proved somewhat important as well in the past. They are very hard if not mountains, then steep and semi long hills.
Penygolosa on stage 17 also seems kinda hard.

But I agree, its not a particular good route for Quintana, but not horrible either.

Sagan just won a Paris-Nice mountain stage in PCM 2015, so yeah why not Pfft

What about Jungels? Surely he should be up there ahead of the likes of Latour and van der Poel. Zakarin, too, in my opinion...

My judgement (don't mind):
Dumoulin - Unlikely
Pinot - In 2 years
Chaves - Very much Yes
Landa - Look at the the last answer
Bardet - Highly unlikely
Kruiswijk - Want him to, but needs to switch teams to have another similar chance

Offcourse, I could be completely wrong with Pinot winning this year and Landa and Chaves never winning Wink

TimoCycling
I am telling you, when Dumoulin focuses on GC and loses a few kg's he can definitely win when there are TT's in it aswell. I rate him very highly, extremely talented guy.

For his sake, let's hope he can do all the things you just said. Time is on his side, so it's a matter of his focus. Although, like Kruijswijk, I think he might need a change of team if he's to achieve a GT win...

TimoCycling
If Kruijswijk stayed on his bike he would've won, simple as that. As a Dutch guy it was very sad to see, but its the harsh truth. I do agree with you about the team, it's weak in the mountains and tactically very bad. for instance, in the stage where Kruijswijk they obviously had to send guys up front to help him later on in the stage, now he was all alone for the whole valley.

But back on topic: I hope Dumoulin will show his promise next year, first Olympic time trial as his big goals, that's why he doesn't focus on GC's this year.

AbhishekLFC
Just realized that nobody is mentioning Kelderman at all...

TimoCycling
Yup, I don't think Kelderman will be good enough. Lacks the ability to win a GT I think, I hope he proves these words wrong though, but that's extremely unlikely.
