Who will be the next new Grand Tour champion and when?
AbhishekLFC
I think this is a good time to post this thread given the dramatic change in the Giro GC over the past couple of stages.

The topic of discussion is this, outside of the big five - Contador, Nibali, Froome, Nairo and Aru - who will be the next Grand Tour champion? When and where will he achieve that?

With evidence from the Vuelta and the Giro, Dumoulin, Kruijswijk and Chaves have come very close to winning a Grand Tour. Valverde has finished 3rd twice in the last 3 GTs, but I think his time is past for a GT win. People like Majka, Zakarin and Kreuziger are always there and thereabouts. While, Jungels has shown a glimpse of what the future might hold for him.

So who will it be? And how soon?

Pinot, this Tour.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Bold statement Wink. But a top 5 for him is possible I think this year...

Aru wins one GT and is suddenly considered one of the greatest of the time period? ok....
Quintana only won a GT in 2014. Horner and Froome first time winners in 2013, Hesjedal and Wiggins first time winners in 2012. Scarponi, Evans and Cobo first time winners in 2011. Schleck and Nibali first time winners in 2010.

If we go back to 2010 the "big 5" have won 10 of 18 GT's, with 7 other being one-time winners (plus Basso the other 1). We're certainly in a hugely unpredictable time compared to the early 2000's where Armstrong and Heras had domination of 2/3 of the GT's.

To answer the question, there'll be a new winner in either the Tour (Pinot) or Vuelta (Chaves, maybe Landa) this season.

Ok, to put it into perspective. I'm not commenting on whether they're the greatest in this period or not. I'm saying those 5 are considered as one of the favourites in whichever GC they ride in at present. Not always (if ever) do we consider some of the other seasoned riders like Uran as a favourite in any GC.

And I'd agree with you on Landa at this year's Vuelta. Seems a fair bet, given his disappointment at the Giro.

Which team do you think he should shift to and who would be an ideal domestique to help him succeed?

How is Zakarin always there? He's 26 and he has ridden 2 GTs his entire career. He withdrew from one and finished 44th in the other.

My mistake. Future prospect then Wink

Do you think he'll ever win it though?

It might be based on the fact that I dislike him, but I doubt it.

Constant? He's finished in the top 10 in 4 of his 13 GT appearances, with the last top 10 in 2013 and the closest he's finished is 5th over 7 minutes down. I could be wrong but I'm failing to see it Wink

I would say the next "new" GT winner would be Pinot if he would go for one that isn't the Tour but seeing as that's not going to happen as long as he's with FDJ so I'll say the next one will be Landa in the Tour this year when Froome falls over, Froome only wins the Tour every 2nd year 2013, 2015 so his next win will be 2017
