Entertaining end of a stage which was already declared as boring and so on. Kluge played it very smart, it looked for me like he wanted to pull, realized that there was a gap behind him and then went for himself. Sad for Pippo, I'd grant him this win. 6th stage win for Germany this Giro already
And Trek looks like they want to mix Cannondale with LottoNL in terms of flopping. |

They had every reason to work today
They have almost no chance of winning and could have secured the red jersey by not working
Well that's not true, Modolo deserved his chance at the sprint so of course they worked. Also they haven't given away the red as if Nizzolo does end up winning it he wasn't just gifted it he has worked his arse off to win that comp, just like last year
He wins it because no one rides for it. Just like last year
He still has to work for it, he just doesn't loaf through the race doing nothing and try's hard in every stage he has a chance in but just can't land a win. Also other riders are going for the Red this year or we would'nt be seeing the intermediate sprints being contested

Tomorrow can be great. So many guys would want to be in the breakaway that we might have a full on race all the way. Today being tougher than expected will help, too.

I'd expect it to be a hotly contested break to get into and you'd think Ulissi will do everything possible to be in it

If only Kittel and Greipel wouldn't have dropped out than we would get a winner who actually deserve it. Now it's Nizzolo, a man who is literally unable to win even when all three top sprinters have left the race. I hope he finishes his career at Trek, he's the embodiment of Trekification.

Good for Kluge and my daily fantasy squad.
I'm sorta relieved IAM got a Grand Tour stage win at last. Imagine having a team assembled for two years in World Tour and in this time frame it has been so irrelevant and unimportant that when you quit the team hasn't achieved a single Grand Tour stage win. Boy, sure glad that they got that covered now.

Great job by Ni22olo!
In fairness, that was one of the wackiest things I've seen in a while. I mean, it wasn't just the peloton that sat up, Pozzato and Kluge kinda did too. it was just weird.

Very strange.
Kluge just suddenly found himself out there as he nailed the corner while the Katusha train went into an elbow flicking frenzy but perhaps most crucially Pozzato's teammate, Belletti, does a good job reaching the front then sitting up into the corner to slow it all down at exactly the same time.
No-one comes through, everyone else started looking at each other, Kluge sneaks a look then gets Pozzato's slipstream for a couple of seconds before leapfrogging and keeping a gap as the sprint finally launches behind.
Kluge definitely owes Belletti a beer |

Why be so negative about the guy? He's the one who's toughed it out and is still in the race defending that jersey, he's had 6 top 10 placings in this years race with 4 podium finishes so give him a break! People were talking about riders not honouring the Red jersey when Kittel then Greipel pulled out when in it then we get a rider who is truly honouring the jersey people and bag him out. It's not like he's just coasting around, others have been contesting for it and if he does indeed win it in the end by beating Ulissi then that's no small feat

What a finish, made me laugh so hard.
Another round of no wins for "sprinters" like Modolo and Nizzolo. Just epic.
And stop whining about riders not honouring a shirt.
You don't honour them, you don't pray to them, you just wear 'em.
They are just shirts.
The Giro got graced by the presence of world's best sprinters who did a great show. Be happy about that. I sure am. The way they showed those wanna-be sprinters who's boss was impressive. And I am already looking forward to the World Championships. And that's exactly it. Why waste energy excruciating themselves over the mountains when there are bigger fish to fry this year? Flat Worlds for real sprinters don't happen often. Points jerseys are to be won every year.
Oh and I only read Kittel and Greipel, Demare and Whiniani also quit. Though they are no real contenders at the worlds as both proved.
Viviani is even italian and I doubt his team made him quit to save energy for the Tour where British Postal will have a team built around him just for bunch sprint lead-outs.

Don't get the hate for Nizzolo as he has something like 15 podiums this season, I know that for sprinters you either are 1st or it doesn't matter, but still. Also it's not like he race some shitty races ala Guardini who goes to Tour de Langkawi, wins 5 stages and calls it a season. And lastly, it's good that there are riders that actually care for jerseys outside of GC one. I defintely prefer riders that specifically fight for these jerseys (especially if they are the level of Nizzolo) rather than GC guys winning it out of default. |

Small note, Viviani didn't quit the race, he finished outside the time limit on stage 8

Well I have had already my share of arguing over Kittel and Greipel dropping out, Nizzolo winning the points classification is a result of their strategy. Stage wins gone and dusted and we now have someone who has shown to be far down the pecking order and ended up with it more by accident, because he bothered to collect points. Is this the point of competition? By listening his Top 10 results you basically confirm my sentiments. He basically wins this competition by showing up to duty, not by excelling in the craft.
I also whine about what I want and I've said that Kittel and Greipel don't value it to a significant, relevant degree, otherwise they wouldn't have dropped out. Nizzolo obviously does value the jeresy to a great deal, for that I do not fault him. I fault the circumstances that guys ended up with lots of stage wins leave the race when it's convenient and some random dude - excuse the saying - ends up with it in Torino.
Jersey of no real value? The jersey is important for what it stands and if we have to argue if points classification of a Grand Tour is worth anything than I wonder if there's any competitive value in cycling at all. Maybe we should just all join together for a nice long sunday stroll then because professional cycling sure isn't worth bothering much then.

Well yes that is the point of the competition It's the points jersey, not the sprinters jersey

That is usual discussion with Shonak about points competiton, he does not get its purpose as the jersey for most consistent rider, who is willing to collect points for 21 days. Actually many people still think it is the jersey for best sprinter, which is obviously wrong assumption. We had this dicussion like dozen times about Sagan.

This is not about $agan at all, not everything is about him, like really You are putting words in my mouth. I've also always said it's the points competition and I never say that $agan doesn't deserve it, in fact I recall even defending $agan.
It's about the fact that the circumstances of the Maglia Rosa are just sad, and I think it's credible to discuss them. But whateverest, you guys prefer the Maglia Rosa lottery, can't really be bothered to discuss every at length here.
