Giro d'Italia 2016 - Week 2 (17th - 22nd May)
Riis123
Passo Giau is a nice little mountain..

Lets take it to the race route discussion. You could do a lot more to make the mountain stages better, but the stages in themselves are great - the placement of stages 13, 14 and 15 are the problem.

Overall, its a very good route.

Even the Tour always has at least 2 decisive groups of mountain stages. Why would you place the first mountain stage on stage 19?

what do you think tomorrow is Rolling Eyes

Another flat finish after some minor mountains?

I'm guessing you aren't paying attention to the climbs or do you think the only hard climbs are to be found in the Alps?

He is just trolling.Stage 14 is better than last 2015's Tour mountain stages all combined.
At least most of this years' Tour mountain stages are good though.

"I disagree without an argument so I'll just say he is trolling"
There was my argument.
Giau is a very hard climb.
The riders were cowards.Stages 13 and 14 are way better than Risoul.Waaay better.

Passo Giau is one of the best climbs in Italy. full on action every time it's raced. Even if it was placed 150 kms from the finish like in 2008 there was bigtime action there.

"Some minor mountains" Pordoi, Sella, Gardena, Campolongo, Giau, Valparoala. 5300 altitude metres
You have nailed it.Great post.

The people that complain the route is "too easy" are probably the same people who moan at dopers when the route is inhumanly hard.

Passo Giau is pointless tomorrow. I don't care what happend in 2008, it's irrelevant.

Given the nature of this race and how far it is from the finish line it will have 0 effect on the outcome tomorrow. Another day with some cheasy attacks and then looking around. Giro 2016 for you.

Well if he podiums then does it really matter? Also he has said a couple of times that he's playing it safe until the 3rd week

It will be a dry, dry May on Daily I can assure u

Maybe but again if he podiums then he's done his job

Yes, I don't dispute that, all I say is he probably is the most passive GC rider and taking into consideration he can't TT and is a pure climber, I don't like it. Not at all. Leipheimer is another case, but he would demolish people on TT's.

Yeah he's passive, liek most of the time. I don't care if he goes into breakaways like he did in the Tour, what else is he to do when he doesn't ride for GC. Sit all day in the pack?

Even in the Tour it took him some time until he got in attacking mode tho. Remember the König situation? He's just not risking stuff at all and mostly seems to not care about doing share of work.

(I don't care if he's a wheelsucker or not, since I think the term is overused and simplifying things. He's just a really passive racer who has not much racing insict really imo)

Seriously, minor mountains? ****, the route goes over 6 passes that over 2000 metres, including the Giau, the Pordoi and the short, but viciously steep Muro del Gatto(which isn't over 2000m though) just 4.5km from the finish, which is more of an uphill false flat, than a normal flat run-in! That's a good mountain stage to me, if not a brilliant one!Cool

This Giro is at least somewhat humane and doable without doping. We do not need 11 MTFs to have a good race, in stead that usually kills a race with attacks only at 500m from the line. These stages with some hard climbs and a flat finish are really great to have along with a few MTFs as they require another sort of skillset, deciding the GC somewhat in their own way.

I think Nibali will be in pink after the MTT.

The difficulty of the route and doping are two things that have no correlation whatsoever. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

Looking forward to the Sella Ronda part of the race. Personally one of my favourite mountain (chains) I have ever climbed. They come in quick succession and are beautiful to see.

6 mountain passes tomorrow - that's a serious cumulative effect over the stage. I'd say it classifies as "tough". Not to say that guarentees great racing, maybe conservatism reigns with an eye on the TT, but I thoroughly enjoyed today's stage.

Quick exert from Inrng race preview about tomorrow gives a flavour:

The race goes beyond 2,000m above sea level five times and there’s more climbing in between. Expect two races here, a breakaway racing for the stage win and behind them the contenders for the overall classification testing each other. How early do the climbers have to attack in order to distance the others? Watch for the tricky finish and the Mür dl Giat, dialect for “Wall of the Cat” and a cruel 19% ramp with 5km to go.

Maybe Im a little harsh on Majka, but I call it as I see it. I doubt he even entertained the thought of attacking today. Hopefully he proves me wrong tomorrow.

As someone noted on CN, had it not been for Tinkoff's kit, you wouldn't have noticed him in the first 13 stages.
