epo made big hulks climb. if ullrich showed up today he would be a classics rider. look at the german entry list for the 1993 amateur worlds he's listed as a sprinter.
Really don't know about that..it was terrible era at cycling. Still Ullrich has started won since then when he touched a bike at any age. One of the most talented rider ever..also despite he's success also one of wasted talent ever. As climber really don't know..But against a clock stunning man. |

Remember when Ullrich not only won, but annihilated some of the best climbers on the peak of their career at Arcalis?
Should have won the Tour 8 times. |

Sounds better than winning a cycling race 8 times.

Hard to judge talent when you are ladling massive amounts of EPO plus other things into your system, I always hear that Ullrich was such a massive talent but maybe he was also just a good responder like Armstrong obviously was.

During the winter Ullrich used to put a jar of Nutella in the microwave so it melted. Then he ate a whole jar with a spoon. Tried that once myself but got sick after the 4th spoon.

I actually remember the Armstrong and Ullrich duels very well at the Tour, The problem was that Ullrich won the Tour at just 24 and was quickly hyped as the next biggest thing since Indurain just a few years earlier and how here was a man that could at least win 5 tours over the coming years, in fact he should have won the tour a year earlier instead of his team leader Rijs, as he was probably the stronger of the two. I then remember he lost to Pantani the following year and was injured for the year that Armstrong first won the tour. The first year that Armstrong won he had the surprise element and a hell of a lot a luck, something that he maximised to maximum effect.
Overall Ullrich may have had the talent but Armstrong was better prepared pre-tour and clearly much smarter on the road when the race started. Every year I hated seeing Armstrong win the Tour but in the end I respected him for doing it. The doping scandals afterwards made no difference to me as nearly all his rivals were doping as well.

ullrich would never have won in 1996. with riis a year younger and the 50% limit not implemented, riis was the strongest by a very long way.
ullrich wouldn't even have made the podium in 1996 if mapei owner giorgio squinzi hadn't ordered rominger and olano to lose minutes to avoid paying podium finish bonuses
in 97? yeah ullrich was easily the strongest. in 99 he wasn't actually injured, he it says in his book that was just the excuse he gave for not feeling like cycling at all
i like ullrich as a person he is a nice man but as a rider i cant respect someone who only cares about the tour |

I didn't know that about Ullrich in 1999 but I always thought that the Ullrich/Rijs situation in 1996 was similar to that with Froome/Wiggins in 2012.

Yep.Riis was the strongest by far that year.
Ullrich won Worlds TT twice,Olympics TT once, won La Vuelta in 1999,he won Suisse in 2004 and 2006 and won HEW Cyclassics(Vattenfall) in 1997.Not someone who fully cares for Tour. But mostly he cared about Tour. |

It still doesn't make it an even playing field and anyway a simple saying in 2 wrongs don't make a right always come to mind when people say as you have.

Yes, but that saying is only applicable if the person has expressed the statement as a positive, in my case I expressed it as a simple matter of fact about what was happening at that time.

Just saw live pictures of the snow on the Colle Dell'Agnello and the organization starting to clear the roads, looks like it will be an epic climb.
