Vuelta Cislista al Pais Vasco 2016

The best week in cycling is soon upon us! De Ronde will start it Sunday, this will proceed and Roubaix will end it. I can't wait.

All the profiles of the stages can as usual be find on PCS. Its somewhat hard to analyse the stages, but stage 2,5 and 6 will probably be the most important in the race. As usual, the ITT is more of a MTT and resembles the one they are tackling in TdF on stage 17. Its some good stuff as usual!

The 2 big favourites are Quintana and Contador. Quintana got the better of Contador in Catalunya, but this is another race. Much shorter, but much steeper hills should suit Contador more than Quintana, but Quintana won this race in 2013 in the race he seriously arrived. Contador, on the other hand, won it in 2014 in his godlike year. IMO, this is a better race to evaluate and analyse towards July compared to Catalunya.

Its obvious that those 2 names will overshadow the rest of the field since Froome and Nibali isn't here. Almost like Boonen and Cancellara did a few years ago. But nevertheless, as usual, the peloton is packed in this race. The next riders in line should be Purito, Henao, Aru and Pinot. Henan is the one who I think stands the best chances. Can Aru and Purito improve this much in a week? I have my doubts. I think this race is too explosive for Pinot, but.. I wouldn't be surprised with at least a top-3.

Other riders? Landa, Yatesx2, Gallopin, Rui Costa, Spilak, Mochema, Martin, Dumoulin, Gesink, Kreuziger, Izaguirre. Once again, this race is shaping up to be a little more than not too shabby. Cool

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I think you're underestimating Dan Martin. He was in fine form in Catalunya, can't wait to see what he can do here. Podium and/or a stage win again are real possibilities, quite excited. Smile

I have high hopes for Pinot Smile he's still getting better!

Maybe. I think I have a tendency to underrated riders I don't like. I don't think there is any question that he has bigger chances of winning than Aru after he beat him handedly in a race supposedly much better suited for Aru.

Ian: Yes he is. But I think those climbs are too short, but everything is possible in the last ITT.

Hopefully Wink Just need that brown-skinned Columbian on that first step.

I could well imagine Henao finally taking a big win, he has been a great helper so far this season. But mostly I'm just hoping that Contador continues to do well and finally gets his spring stage race victory after closely missing it twice by now. Vamos! Smile

I think he's really stepped up since he chucked that tantrum on the cobbles in last years TDF, he stuck it out and winning on the Alpe was a big deal. I don't think this race suits him but wouldn't surprise me if he contests for the win

Profile for the ITT - seeing as it's labelled "Eibar - Eibar" does this mean they're climbing Arrate? Looks about the right height and length from the profile. If so, then this TT is not to be underestimated at all; usually the Itzulia's TTs are rolling, lumpy affairs, with short patches of steep gradient. Arrate isn't the typical Basque climb in that it's longer but more gradual, so the analogy with the Tour MTT is a good one; it will certainly be a good indicator of how Contador and Quintana's chances are shaping up ahead of that TT in the Tour.

Anyway a great parcours as always for this race - every stage offering an opportunity for attacks, which is one of the main reasons this is probably my favourite of the one-week WT stage races. I think Nairo will do well and most likely podium, but I don't think he will win - my bet is Henao, it's just his sort of race and I don't think Purito will turn up in the form he did last year, which was the only thing between him and victory. Looking forward to it.

Ion challenging for a stage win... possible. Ion winning a stage? Never. Pfft

Seriously tho, he has improved this year. Top-5 should be his personal goal again.

Okay, let's be clear. Contador won't win Pfft

I think that Sagan is not the only one in the team with that rainbow curse eh Pfft

But yeah, let's wait to Contadope's excuses for not winning Pfft

I think its mostly his fans (referring to CN members) who are making up excuses every time and thats annoying. Contador is the favourite, so lets wait and see, stage 2 should tell A LOT.

Top 5 in this field would be brilliant for him! And yes, Pinot's another one to watch for me. But I think you know where my GC loyalties lie Wink

Aru seems to be coming into some good form lately so he may surprise a few here....

Nah, Aru is derping this spring. I would like to see him do well, especially in Le Tour, but in Pais Vasco I don't have to much hope for him

Avin Wargunnson
Always a good week in Basque country, with some non-traditional designed stages and agressive racing, looking forward to that.

Contador, Pinot and Nairo being the obvious favourites, Contador could form a very strong duo with Kreuziger here, both should end in top10.
I'll be back
