Do you think there are any other similarities between Armstrong and Froome?
Yes with 10 years intervals comes a king of Tour De France rider. Froome, Armstrong, Indurain, Hinault, Merckx and Anquetil. Armstrong is the greatest of them all, with seven consecutive victories. Froome lacks more TDF victories yet, but it's just matter of time.

I am so tempted to like this post, given the amount of time I spent lauhing.

There was no money in cycling sport and all trained at amateur level
Yes there was. And Merckx took them all. That jerk.
Yes He and Hinault won much, because all the others was amateur level. Merckx and Hinault would not have a chance in today with their too much weight and too low cadence. High cadence was something Armstrong found out and Froome has so developed it even more. Weight is very new and Team Sky has so optimized it further. There are as the first car vs car to today, they are constantly finding new way to optimized and make it even better.
Hm amateur level training. Almost an insult mate.
Training was hard back then too, but of course it's more specialized in details today. One thing is the food you eat. That has changed very much since back in the days.
Riders fitness is closely monitored by an army of trainers with more sofisticated equipment, at least for the bigger teams. Talents are nursed into the sport much better today.
Surely Merckx and the boys that was on higher level would today be in better shape, but question remains (as always) if they would be better or not.
One thing you must remember is that you got a heck lot more riders on higher levels today, as in all sports, so it's much harder to be in class with Merckx (winning at all levels and in all categories)
Merckx was special and he got the nickname The Cannibal simply because it didn't matter if it was TDF or a little criterium in a little town. The man had a presence about him in all competitions.
I believe it is the same in every sport, and of course the money is better today for the big boys. Back in the days it was more getting some bucks for lunch that day. Take my word for it mate...
Chris Boardman was talking about his hour record on Sky last month.
He pointed that despite 30 years advances in training and nutrition, peaking his form specifically for the record, choosing the right velodrome and time of day to do it, and pacing himself perfectly for a 1 hour effort; he only barely beat Merckx
Merckx did it at the end of a 150 racing day season, tired, with early 70s science and didn't pace himself at all because he wanted to beat the 10k and 20k records so he sprinted from the start and faded a lot.
Merckx was Merckx. No one comes close. |

But the fact that Merckx didn't train that hard wouldn't make him actually better than Wiggo and Froome? Cause you know, the guy won so many things without even training properly!

Peter Sagan would have won everything in the 1970s. |

Ignoring Merckx still racing in part so that time period;
So Sagan is a better climber and stage racer than Thevenet, Van Impe and Zoetlemelk now?
Granted Maertens won a lot of races then and he is a similar type of rider than Sagan. But I'd still say Maertens was the better rider, at least palmares-wise, maybe Sagan would've had a few seconds to him.

If Sagan raced in 1970s, he would be probably buried under pile of some white stuff.

You can always ignore him, that is usually best weapon.

Why would they? He's not abusing anyone or posting anything offensive.
You can't just block people from discussion/opinion forums because they hold a different opinion to the majority. |

There's holding a different opinion and then there's trolling. I have no problem with the former, in fact there hav been some very good discussions where one person defends his opinion against a majority. But this is just posting to annoy other people. Read his posts here and in the stat discussion thread.

It's only annoying if you take him seriously, which clearly even he doesn't expect you to do. I've had a good giggle over the last week or so watching people try to have a serious debate with him.
I personally see it as a bit of light entertainment. No harm done. If he annoys you then just ignore his posts. |

Unfortunately the forum gives no option to hide someone's posts. I'm also not the kind of person that checks who made the post before deciding to read it. So I would prefer some kind of action from the Admins.
I know he's probably gloating now for getting so much attention, but yeah..

Of course. They rode steel bikes with rock tires back then. Even I could beat Merckx on a modern bike.
