Sorta rumoured for some time, but Contador openly considers to create his own team. He has already his guys of Fundacion Contador and they way he presents them and rides with them this is really a special project for him. Question is of financing the stuff but surely there's a way for the most established household-name in cycling.
“I have two options in my head: One is to carry on if I suffer a mishap at the Tour, as I did in 2014, and the other is to launch a professional team,” Contador explained to the Spanish media, admitting the chances of him racing in 2017 could be as high as 50 per cent.
However, he described the idea of creating his own professional team as “complicated”, admitting he would need a budget of 15 million Euro to compete at WorldTour level. He also confirmed that he would only be interested in creating a team that would help him target the most important races.

He should team up with good pal Alonso. Havn't heard Fernando's name in a while and it's about time his team idea failed again

Yep, chances are Contador will race again next year. He will probably add Paulinho, Hernandez, Bennati, maybe some staff from Tinkoff + a little more as well to go along with those youngsters. If he indeed creates that team already next year, the least of his problems to go he wildcards for all the races he wants to attend. Who'll say no to Contador? Regardless, a team with Contador will already be miles better than the second best Pro Continental-team.... for the stage races at least.
Hopefully he will sort all this out in the spring so its out the way come July. |

Hahaha! Actually I read an article on one of the sites last week about Alonso and another rubbish rumor of a team starting up.......
Does cycling really need a pro team created by Contador? Convicted doper and well entrenched within cyclings problems, can't see how he is a good example to any young up and coming riders and I still can't believe he has a development team

Don't forget Hincapies team was around as well. Vino4ever. Whilst we are at it why not add in things like Rabo Dev or Astana City, teams with serious links to previous doping issues.
Cycling is just full of b*stard dopers, there's no hope. We should all give up and go home.

I see the sentiment and the concern behind Contador being involved with a team as a sorta DS/manager however given the current little economic interest in cycling in Spain, teams need either big names to start out, a rich past to sustain like Movistar or a determined long-term sponsor like Caja Rural in Spain. Contador does provide the big name, wants to be involved long-term and can give security to young talents. Whether or not talents under his supervision will embark on a doping journey, we'll find out, if he plays a role in that is then a whole other question.
Spain is one of the most important cycling nations in the world, hosting prestigious races and having a long of big names as well as a fanatic fan-base. So yes. Spain needs teams because cycling needs teams.

I may be missing something but why has Wiggins been included in your post above. As far as I'm aware he's never failed any test or been done for doping.
What's the implication? |

It's just not a good enough reason to accept someone who has built his career on a foundation of cheating, cycling needs teams from the heartland for sure but not when it's just a continuation of the unhealthy and immoral culture that is pro cycling. How are things meant to change when we just lay down and take it

Funnily enough most young climbers cite Contador as their idol (Barguil, Aru to name two)

I know! And TvG has had training rides with Armstrong post 2011 plus many many many other examples of young riders looking up to dopers and that here is my issue with the whole Contador and his ambitions with starting up teams.

He has also build his career on tough training, hard sacrifice, most notably unique panache and exciting racing and by being the best for a very long time. By being kind in races - helping old teammates, granting stage wins, and showing virtue within the peloton. By being a sportsman and being a fighter. There are also lessons about what to do and about what not to do, maybe this is worth a cent too from a past banned rider, not just from angelic, "pure" riders.
These are values that ought to be taught young cyclists too.
You have said numerous times that you consider cheating a widespread problem within the peloton, in fact I think you even said that you consider most of them in the pro peloton to be dirty: so how can you fault him that much for cheating when the pros do it regardless and it's needed to contest on the same field.
The implication that Contador would urge young riders to dope is based surely upon experience of older riders like Vino or Rijs who have done well to undermine and discredit the image of the "cyclist turned manager", however I consider neither Wiggins nor Contador to be of such a nature that they put the needle to their young riders figuritavely speaking. Either way, young riders are responsible for their actions just as Contador is for his. Again, I do not support his past doping however he has been banned for that and stripped of his wins and faced the just penalty and possibly learned his lesson, and that's that. Young riders can learn from that too.

I think those are the most wide-spread and most repeated arguments to exculpate dopers. And while there's some theoretical merit to them, it's also a carte blanche to every young rider contemplating whether or not to do doping. On what grounds can you tell that young rider not to do it, if you acknowledge that you cannot really fault someone like Contador that much for doing it?

There's nothing to say against him passing on his experiences, good and bad, to young cyclists. I'm sure he has a lot of positive virtues to pass on. It's a whole different thing to give him such a prominent and official position in the professional cycling organisation, though. Once again, it's a terrible sign to young riders imo. And of course he has done his time with his bans, and he has a chance to redeem himself, but not in that high of a position, if it were up to me. That would be a lesson for everyone else to learn as well, by the way.

I like ths talk about what might or might no happen with Contador. Meanwhile David Millar (yes him of noted doping in the early 00's) has got himself a great role with the British Cycling Academy. And neigh a word is said
