I also want to let everyone know my plans for a follow-up for this after the finals:

I will run this again, probably with 24 players spread over a group - group - knockout. But since the holidays are coming up, I'll probably launch it begin January 2016.
So if you want in, stay tuned at the start of the new year. Wink

Once more I was highly lucky to have hit the high score attack with my low score give up set.

Thanks for organizing this and indeed January sounds a lot better for a round 2.

Good luck Vali and may the more lucky guy win.

Ah well, I knew inside it was a bit of a flukish run. Well played Vali, good luck to you and roturn in the final.

15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Well what can I say, I'm apparently having some kind of a lucky run since the 3rd group match with my high numbers never hitting those 0 or 1 pointers, as that would have obviously meant a loss for me.

thanks roturn and jandal for the good wishes, I'm hoping for an exciting final, and may the luckier guy win. Wink

I rolled the dice on where I would put 14. Bad move. Pfft

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the finale of High Risk. Today we will know who may take this prestigious trophy home. It's been a high-tense run so far. The finale will be played between roturn and Vali, both meet each other again after departing from group C.

According to the bookmakers, roturn is the favorite to take the win today. He remains undefeated so far and now faces his final foe. Just one more win necessary to become World Champion (because, why not). Roturn is a hard-to-read opponent with changing tactics. He is quick to adapt and unpredictable, which makes him impossible to anticipate to. You're always going into the unknown fighting roturn.

His opponent Vali has fought his way to the final, showing character. He can be described as a cold killer, very calculated. He started off with a draw and a loss (against roturn!), but then the killer instinct took over and he came out runner-up because of 1 set win more than jihardy. After that, though, he took out weirdskyfan and jandal, two strong players. He often uses the switch-around tactic, so let's see what he has in store for us today!

But first, the fight for place 3. Jandal proved himself a strong player and eager to score. He's not shy of sacrificing a set for the higher purpose. lakebeach was group winner in group A. He rarely leaves a set unprotected but he does take risks in going low at times. His semi-finals tactic was daring but not enough to break roturn.

Battle for place 3

Lakebeach with a strong start. 13 points against jandal's 4. A set in the pocket though now it gets harder for him. Only 7 points left, but one set more and he has it. Jandal goes strong in set 2, laying 12 against lakebeach's 4. That means it's tied now. The last set decides everything, and there jandal takes the edge with 1 point, 4 against 3. Jandal gets bronze!

And now, ladies and gentlemen, we are ready for the finale of this tournament. Roturn and Vali have entered the arena (because, why not), both showing their poker face. Let's get started!

Finale

RoturnvsVali

Spoiler
915

Both take a strong start. 9 points for roturn, against Vali's 15. First set is for Vali, the underdog but not at all chanceless. A good start is important.

22

Oh and then 2 against 2! It's a draw. The first match of the finale is a tie!
93

Both players get a few moments to catch their breath, maybe adjust their tactic. They're ready for another round. Here they come.

Once again Vali takes a good start. Roturn didn't go quite as high this time. Only 2 against Vali's 7. The game is Vali's for now.

Roturn strikes back. With a niner. But Vali is careful, calculated. Only 1 point in this set. This means...

912

The last set is 9 against 12. A high play for a third set, but 12 points means Vali is our new champion!

That was it. Thanks for playing and for following this. We'll be back with another, larger edition in January 2016. See you then!

Congratulations to the winner and all the other players. Here is the podium one last time:

Haha, lovely description, thanks Ian. Grin

For me, roturn, you were definitely the best player in this game, as you utterly dominated everyone till the final (including me), and you would have been the deserving winner but I guess I was just the luckier guy in the end.

Thanks for the congratulations guys, it was a very interesting, different and especially luck depending game, so I want to thank Ian for organizing this in a great and fast way (as usual you might even have to say with him Pfft)

So I'm very much looking forward to the next edition, I just hope I won't miss out on it, because as trekbmc said, those free spots are gone veeery fast. Pfft

Thanks a lot guys. It was fun to organise. And I'm very surprised things went so quick and smooth, game's already over Grin

Not sure yet how I'll work with sign-ups. Perhaps the best thing to do is allowing pre-sign up's and see what number we've already got and then open the sign-ups after New Year's going for 24 or 32 players, depending on n° of pre-sign ups.
Either way, it can't hurt to state your interest now here or through pm, I'll note the names for sure.
Though I'll want you to confirm this when the sign-ups actually start, to make sure!

trekbmc
I'd definitely join another game, although I'll be away until the 5th of January so not if it starts immediately after new year. Wink
