“But if nobody else cares about the future of the sport, then why should I care? F*ck all of them! That’s my personal reason why I want to leave professional cycling. From January 2017, I’m gone. I’m out of cycling. I’ll jump on my jet, fly home and focus on my business interests and enjoying my life. Everyone who is left in cycling will be the ones who will be in the shit. They will have to try to survive year by year, trying to convince sponsors to back a sport that isn’t sustainable.”

Wellens will be riding Giro, no Tour.
Though for some reason the team believes him to be a future stage racer.
I agree that he could do well in some one-week races, potentially. But please don't try to make a GT rider out of Tim Wellens
It's the same old 'Tour de France bug' where any highly rated rider both young or older who does well in a week long tour, either ends up believing or gets pushed by his team into believing, that he can become a grand tour rider.
Just think Thomas and D.Martin two riders who believe that they can podium in a GT. They'd be better off concentrating on what they do best and that is classics and week long tours.
It's sad watching riders do this, Rui Costa is another who now has 2 wasted seasons chasing a TDF podium that he's just not made for. I like Wellens as a rider and think he's got a few big wins in him so hope he doesn't get pushed into wasting half his career chasing the GT dream, I don't want to see end up like Gesink

Yeah I thought Wellens is better off sticking to it like that and chasing stages. Like Costa got 2 a couple of years ago, but as you say better sticking to Tour de Suisse and other week long races. Simon Spilak has got his type nailed, ridden 1 GT in the last 4 years, I really love him as a rider 16th in the World tour this year and most of the "fans" have never heard of him . I suppose thats the thing though. The managers want to push them for grand tours because thats what the general public notice. And yeah all very well being top 20 in the world but if no ones really heard of you outside the true cycling fans then you're gonna want to get a bigger name for yourself. I reckon Wellens should try 1 GT. If it doesnt work out as GC then wait a while longer concentate on week long races, maybe the classics and trying to snatch stages. No need to persistantly try year after year to only get like 35th as a best result

Yeah, talked about already with Ollfardh(?) a couple of times, he's a class-a stage hunter, but probably won't be GT material anytime soon.
I'm glad he's back to Giro, he's been dynamite there in 2014 but was a proper disappointment at le Tour this year unfortunately. I think the Giro weather and climbs suit him much more than the long Alpes climbs and the pace of SKY trains. Already looking forward to his Ardennes deeds again.
Classy!

I do remember that Shonak. My opinion hasn't changed, with the right training Wellens can get top 10 in le Tour. But it would be a waste of his talents, he's a very good allrounder, he can climb, good time trial, not slow towards the end of a race and he takes cobbles good enough to win Eneco Tour twice. He should keep targetting what he was targetting before, hilly classics and 1 week stage races that don't have too many mountain finishes. And hunt stages in the Giro or Vuelta.
The problem is Belgium is long overdue in a GT winner, and everyone who can get over a hill is immediatly promoted to GT material. I don't see Wellens doing it, nor anyone else at this point (well, maybe Louis Vervaeke). But I think Lotto gets it now, and they won't send him to lead a GT anymore.
The problem is that our local climbers who weigh 60 kilograms, will do shit in the youth races, because their physique can't handle the flemish races. They will quit cycling and get an office job. After that, only sprinters and cobblers remain, and the occasional puncheur who will one day win le Tour.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Can't see Vervaeke as GT material. Well especially not podium. We have De Gendt for that
Actually if I'm being honest. Put all Belgians against each other in a GT right now and I'd actually put some money on Benoot. Well maybe wouldn't win but if he'd apply himself he could do well, with his talent.
Fortunately he'll be smart enough not to and do what he really kicks ass in. But a GT winner from Belgium? Not in the next 5 years. |

With all Belgiums only in a GT, I am quite sure that Van den Broeck will finally make it. But probably crashing out on the Champs Elysees then. |

He can't even beat Monfort nowadays. I would actually put my money on Serge Pauwels at this point.

oh no, money is gone from cycling now? can't wait on people starting to complain that cycling doesn't get even money pumped into it while simultaneously going insane of joy with tinkoffs money.
oh well, the "give money but only if you're nice" mentality is also a way to live :\

Belgian climbers.. hmmmm.... Nice bunch of second/third rate climbers. VdB, Monfort, Pauwels, Seeldrayers, Bakelants, De Clercq, Vanendert. Not sure about Benoot, maybe in 10 years or so. I think they're best bet would be Dylan Teuns.
Maybe Wout Van Aert can make an epic switch to GT riding .

as far as I know he doesn't have any doping cases on his doorstep since buying Saxo. (Kreuziger doesn't count imo as it was about his Astana years) also who's going to fund Tinkoff/Saxo what ever after 2016.
also his twitter can be hilarious if you're in that type of humour

Passion and money my friend. There are not a lot of rich people mad for cycling like Oleg is. Cycling will miss him for sure and it is another win of old rigid corrupt UCI body. Yeah, he is a crazy motherfucker, but he has some really good points about professional cycling and its biggest mistakes, that stop cycling from bursting out of shadows.
To celebrate him going out of the cycling bussines is foolish imo...

His Twitter can be hilarious and also has great things like calling Obama a monkey and talking about sponsoring a women's teams with long legged sluts...
Real funny stuff!
Oh and yeah might not have had any doping cases since taking over the Saxo licence but he could of taken the same view as he had with his previous team which was a mantra of 'you can dope but don't get caught'

You should realize that if cycling will miss him is not a question of your personal preference or your opinion about his character. Cycling is desperate for sponsors as the whole and yet the UCI is able to expel the sponsors passionate for cycling with its rigid thinking.
You think i admire Oleg for his personality? I dont, but cycling will miss him, his passion and his money. And i have to confess that i found his humour hillarious at some points (not calling a black person monkey though), as i dont think you have to be politically correct all the time. I also like nazi jokes as it helps me to deal with the horrors itself, am i terrible guy?
