The only crisis in Italian cycling is the lack of top level teams and really good classics men for the cobbled and Ardennes classics, apart from that they`re prtty good at everything else. they also I think have more riders in the top división than any other country. |

I agree with this, Italians never cease to amazed me specially in grand tours, but they need to win more single day classics, like the cobbles. With Nibali's win in Lombardy, my faith has been restored.

Also culturally Spain is similiar to Italy with its approach to sport, but in cycling Spain really only produces great mpuntain and hill climbers, despite now and again having riders like Freire. Whereas Italy is an enigma as it produces riders of all types for all types of terrain.
Today Italy badly needs cobbled classics men, as Pozzatto is never going to return to his form of several years ago and Ballan is too old after his ban. Paolini despite winning the G-W and Omloop was always an opportunist and not a true leader.
In other classics Nibali always had the ability finishing third one year at MSR, almost pulling a LBL victory off the year that Iglinskiy won and finally winning at Lombardy.
The problema is Italy`s best other classics men at the momento G.Caruso and Ulissi are good riders but not to the level of men like Bartoli, Bettini and Di Luca etc
Also I`ve not really noticed any really Young classics prospects either for classics and that`s where the crisis lies.

Well, unfortunately most of the names you mention have been convicted dopers. If there's on country with a doping history, it has to be Italy. So maybe the (relative) lack of Italian results mean cycling is becoming more and more clean?

Nearly all the great Italian riders were dopers I know that and they seem to have more riders still getting caught than other countries. From a viewing perspective doping never bothered me, if I raced it certainly would.
I agree the current crisis is also possibly down to the fact that doping controls are really tight for Italian cyclists and this has created a generation that finds it hard to achieve results without some kind of doping.
Personally I`m one of these people that thinks most riders are doped to some degree anyway. For the simple reason riders that get caught are just so varied.
Cycling is a dirty sport always has been and probably always will be.

It's because CONI are actually doing their job compared to the authorities in most other countries
