Wtf!?
They tried their best. They sent a good squad, but tbh they have no awesome sprinter, so they needed to attack and GVA simply couldn't beat Sagan. Belgium rode a hard race. They didn't mess it up at all. If your leader can't go with the attack, there's nothing you can do(especially when its that short before the finish).

Eddy Boss was on perfect form, and would have beaten Sagan in the sprint- I think the more baffling decision is why Kristoff was ever chosen to lead in the first place.

Because of his season, I guess. He won RvV and some other big races. I would've put him as captain as well, but Eddy was in-form there.

Yeah why would you ever choose the winner of the Ronde and so many races this season over all mighty EBH, dumb national coach
That said, EBH should've taken the opportunity he was presented. |

Can't go with the attack? He instigated the attack and was 2-4 meters behind Sagan on top. GVA had all the aces to become WC but he made his move too early. Would have been interesting where Boonen would have ended up in the bunch sprint had he ridden energy-conserving (Vanmarcke & Gilbert rode pretty dumb, look up Ollfardh's post).
Still Belgium rode hard and enjoyable, just not smart, which is what Spilak criticed them for. Netherlands also good and for the eye, so many moves by their guys, thumbs up. Many minor to middle cycling nations with good action and having their riders active, think Belarus, Estonia or Costa Amadorica. Spain did some moves but way too little for that quality of a team, Italy was pretty boring too actually. I don't see why people think one hates Australia when someone doesn't want to see someone like Bling or Gerrans win. I hate the term wheelsuckers but they are just pretty boring riders. Why would i ever want a boring sprinter/rider to win over someone who actually does stuff throughout the race. I don't want watch cylcing to see a hundred meter sprint.. And just for the record: Australia has some great riders like Morton, Durbridge, Dennis and of course, I love me some Hansen, but guess what, he actually knows what wind feels like.

He was ordered not to work with GVA so that Kristoff would win/get a medal.
Besides that, you can't be third on the last climb after 250 kilometers if your shape isn't great.

He was ordered to give up a safe bronze medal if they stayed away to give Kristoff a vague chance for gold? Man...

Yup, go figure them norwegians.
oasson Hagen and Van Avermaet crested the top of 23rd Street a handful of second down on Sagan but with the Norwegian holding back through team orders they were swamped before the finishing climb to the line.
"He was supposed to not work but then maybe if he had caught Sagan they would have stopped working. It’s all easy to say afterwards but he was told to follow the attacks and not to work. Then he could win the sprint from the front or I could try and win from the back."

Everybody knew it would come down to the last lap, so you could at least contain Boonen, GVA and Gilbert for that and let all the other guys on the squad make it a hard race.
As someone noted, GVA had all the tools, but once again messed up. Like the whole belgian squad. And I still dont get why they didnt select Roelandts.
Anyways, it was just to touch upon Spilak's point (which was a way longer post) which made sense at that point and even more now. |

He critizises belgium for riding hard, but also Australia for riding smart. I don't get that shit, sorry. How can I hate someone for doing that, and hate someone else, for doing the opposite?
IMO, Belgium raced a nice race, Boonen had a chance, the whole squad made it hard and GVA...well, its known that he goes to early, mostly. Spilak already hated on the squad, belgium brought to the worlds, although team chemistry is as important as performance and if Boonen and GVA want people they know and like around them, its a valid point. Just bringing the best riders doesn't work all the time. All this hate nowadays. Can't you guys just like cycling?

Nobody is hating on anything here, we just talk about what they did good and what they did bad. Australia didn't race smart, they rode boring like they always do. Belgium rode hard but not smart. And Norway was just stupid.

I criticised (pre-race) Bomans for being Lefevre's bitch and taking a couple of his riders while there are much better more deserving riders. I continue to stand by that point.
During the race they did nothing wrong. They made the race hard and completely blew up the German team. This meant a late attack was succesfull, unfortunately Van Avermaet just came up a bit short.

I think he is speaking about me.
I just stated that I don't like the Australian way, but had Sagan not been godlike, Matthews probably had won. So I think they did the right thing, apart from the fact that Gerrans was selfish wasnt able to understand that Matthews was the better pick.
While on the other hand, Belgian rode hard and a good race as such, but I think should have kept Boonen for the last lap. GVA attacked a little too early, but thats super easy to say in hindsight.
All I did was to point to a point (see what I did there) of Spilak's which you honestly can't agree on since Belgian got far and away the best riders for a race like yesterday's. |

Tbh I don't like Gerro anyways and Australia kind of had it coming to them but, get this, Mathews is a bloody sprinter. Not your archetypical puncher or classics man. A sprinter who can handle hills and long distances quite well. I think Australia as a whole weren't amazing and those two should have decided on a leader, probably Mathews, and Gerrans has the worst style and attitude in-race, but Mathews doesn't attack because he knows he can probably win anyway. As shown.
I'm not getting too deep into this, so that's all I agree/disagree on in this argument.
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

I totally agree with that. Sure, I would've loved to see Boonen, Tony() or Degenkolb in it, but Sagan is just perfect for that jersey. The first Rainbow-stripes-wheelie!
