Okay, here goes my rant. Sorry if I'm steering away from the main topic, but I really need to blow off some steam. I feel so cheated. I thought I'd post somewhere else, but here goes:

So the South African Jnr squad for Worlds RR was:
- Keagan Girdlestone (absolute beast with 2 UCI JNR tour wins!)
- Jarrod Hattingh (SA U18 road race champ)
- Kyle de Wet

Disappointed not to have been at the World Champs. My results throughout the year were better than Kyle de Wet's (except for SA RR champs, where he was 4th and I was 9th in the bunch sprint. Although I had a better race as I was in a break that got caught on the 2nd last lap and I single-handedly pulled back a 4 rider break in the final lap). Placed 3rd at TT champs (only 38" off the winner), 3rd overall in our national junior tour where I worked as a domestique for Jarrod Hattingh (ahead of Kyle), 2nd GC at Tour de Boland (behind Jarrod) and a stage win, 1st Junior and 9th overall (out of elite men) at Knysna Cycle Classic where Nolan Hoffman won the sprint from a small group of 13 (incl me) that got away on the hilly route (where I finished ahead of some of our "promising" u23 men).

Now as for our European tour, I finished every single race and had by far the best results out of our team (incl Jarrod and Kyle). Keagan rode for a French squad and had some spectacular results by winning the GC on 2 different tours! Also, in a kermess race I finished 9th despite being sick (Jarrod and Kyle both DNF). Okay, it's not a UCI race and I know that competitive is much less significant, but there were nonetheless some teams and riders from the UCI tours. And finally, in our last race and stage in France (Ronde des Vallees), I was constantly on the attack on the finishing circuit to try and bridge across to the break (which eventually won by like 40 seconds). I spent the whole last half of the stage around Keagan, who was the race leader. There was a split the final lap and I fucked up my sprint legs to jump across to it. So what I'm trying to say is, that I am capable of being around Keegan in the concluding stages of a race. Kyle and Jarrod both DNF.

Don't get me wrong, Jarrod and Kyle are both extraordinarily good friends and great teammates. I feel that Jarrod has every right to be in the Worlds team as he is national champ and very talented, but just struggled to find his legs in Europe. Kyle though, to be fair, did not shape up in Europe as I did and I (and many other people) feel that I would've been a far more valuable team mate for Keagan (especially since I was up alongside him when he won in France).

Now it pains me to say this, but the only difference between me and Kyle is that I am white and he is coloured. Cycling SA's selection policies don't mention anything about racial quotas (as are present with our other sport teams), but an official and friend from CyclingSA (not involved in selection) told me that the only reason I was left out was based on racial grounds. Furthermore, I've heard a rumour that the president of CyclingSA tends to get involved with selection and favour riders of colour.

I've been immensely pissed off. I've felt really disappointed the last time since the build up to worlds and seeing all the facebook posts, tweets, etc, about training rides, recons and racing in Richmond whilst knowing that I should be there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no aspiring TdF winner or the next Sagan, and neither am I trying to blow my own trumpet. I'm just trying to to blow off some steam after feeling absolutely cheated and robbed of something which I feel I deserved.

It'd been the best damn thing on daily to cheer for you in the junior race, aidan, but I hope you will use it as further encouragement and motivation to do well in the sport you obviously love. What you got out of all of this seems to have been an amazing season with a very large goal of yours, making your racing seem very exciting instead of riding purely for results. I think you can and should be proud of that. Making it to the World Championships is big and you were close enough. It sounds lame but I'm sure you'll make it eventually.

It's always frustrating when you work really hard for something and eventually end up feeling cheated or betrayed as a result. I'm not sure about the SA's selection policy, with South Africa's background I consider it as reasonable thing to have though, especially since cycling is largely a white guy-sport, unfortunately.

All the best with your training, the important thing is that you make it to Innsbruck in 2018 so I can cheer for you on the sidelines. Cool Wink

Oh man, thats brutal. You got every right to be upset mate. On the other side you can channel your dissapointment and anger into training for next season to return stronger and better. I hope this drives you to launch your career as a pro.

You are more than welcome to rant here Aiden and it is clearly a mess of a selection, following you're progress has been great and yeah I think without being biased that you deserved a spot on the squad. I can understand why you are annoyed but I can also understand why the other rider was selected ahead of you, it is good for cycling in you're country that black riders are getting involved and this was obviously one way of promoting this to that community. The problem with this when it comes to selection is that as you stated there is no quota system in place so in this particular case you have every right to feel wronged as you did exactly what was required to earn you're spot so yeah it is unfair, maybe you need to speak up and voice you're concerns so this can be avoided in future and if they have a unofficial quota in place then they need to make it official and if they don't then they should drop it because it's not fair on the riders

This is a great course! Watching the women's RR and love how the Dutch team are already breaking this race apart with 83 ks still to go! Awesome!!!

Should I feel ashamed when saying I havent watched one single event yet? Suffice to say the WCs arent my cup of tea, but I dont even know if Im a real cycling fan. Sure Im looking forward to tomorrow, but Im not really stoked or anything - I'd still, honestly, much rather watch the Lombardia next Sunday if I had a choice between the two or any decent mountain stage in a GT.

I dno if its the national teams, the rather boring circuit(s) or the fact that I cant remember I have ever witnessed at great WC RR (all that I really care for of those events..) since I missed 2009 due to borderschool and 2013 after boycutting the rest of the season and being furious at Chris Horner which I think were the most intriguing route and races.

Anyways, Im hoping for Valverde, but the route I think doesnt suit him and generally seems a little sucky

In my opinion, I find this extremely worrisome. Any national cycling organization or any organization that puts it's chances to win on the back burner for the sake of "diversity", are really the racist ones.

Thanks guys for your loyal support! This has really been a motivating factor for me to come back again next year and earn my spot in the national team. I'll make a longer post about my plans once I've finalised a few decisions.

Now to get back to the point of this thread - women's racing is so different to mens! A very welcome change of tactics and strategy. It's interesting how they don't let a break get away. It seems like a very high pace for the duration of their races. Holding thumbs for Ashleigh Moolman! Smile

Olds hits the deck, as does Ferrand-Prevot apparently. Nope, Pauline stays up just about but is slowed

I'm all for reward and selection based upon performance and I wish Aidan would have got called up to the squad and see the selection as wrong in this instance: But calling them the "real racists" for making a sound selection in a country of a long history of discrimination and racial suppression (keep in my mind that Kyle de Wet seems to have had some good results as well and thus may justified his seleciton as well very much), and thereby possibly engaging the local community, is an enormous belittlement of true racism and discrimination which still happens in South Africa and many other parts in the world. We live in a social world, not in some vacuum of individuality.

Yeah good active racing so far. Women always take advantage of having cameras set on them and want to present themselves from the best side. Libby Hill is really sweet. It's also a bit of a showcase of how races could be with smaller pelotons.

It's not racism to try and help people and communities that have had many many many years of institutionalised oppression based on race to find there feet, it might start with quotas but that changes over time. How is this a problem?
