For under an hour I don't take water but yesterday I was gone for over an hour (about an hour and a half), so I was glad I had the bottle, it was too warm, too Pfft

Going to Italiy in 1 1/2 weeks mainly just to cycle and watch the TdF. My racer was stolen once i moved to the Citay, so to compensate, I have begun to train in order for me to drop my daddy and some of his friends and have been fortunate enough to borrow a racer. Euskaltel2011-outfit, Piemonte (not too hard climbs, probably around 4-5 long and gradients of 6% average I would guess) and some good food and 35 never fails me.

So, I havent really done anything psychically the last 2 years apart from some lil runs here and there and some MTB-ing, so I was very pleased with 5 kilometres in 24.30 today, especially in this heat and the fact that I like to have a few smokes (or 10) a day. Gonna look to improve that over the next week which shouldnt be too hard to motivate myself to in this weather and with the Tour. Just a little curious of how this running will translate into climbing....

Running is going great at the moment. Mostly trying to run at least 2 - 3 times a week, generally I do about 10 kilometers, which I find to be a perfect training distance. With 3 or 4 intermediate sprints, it's a good effort. Though this heat makes it harder, so I ususally go running in the evening.

Still, very much enjoying it! Very happy to have those knee pains behind me, I had them for more than 5 years. Feels liberating to be able to go out there and run without any problems!

So now I've build up a decent stamina, but my pace isn't that high. Any tips on how to improve this? Do the 10 km and slightly go faster each time or work on speed with the shorter distance? Thanks in advance for the tips Wink

I would suggest doing tempo runs lasting 20-25 minutes, in order to increase both pace and lactate threshold. Long-intervals (>-10min.) can also do the trick. Try adding one or two higher-paced sessions to your weekly routine.

Work on what you want to be good at. A coach, I forget the name, suggests doing 2x12min + 2x6min intervals with 5min. rest between the 12min. and 3 between the 6min. You should run at your "goal pace" when preparing for a 10k race.

Today was the last race of the season for me, and I did complete my season goals. I didn't do it until the very last two races, but hey!

The field usually includes somewhere betewen 170-500 people, and I was aiming for one or two top 30, and one top 20. My best finish last year was a 24th, so it felt like a natural progression.

I got a 20th place in the second to last race, and I think I managed a 20ish place today (official results haven't been posted yet).

It was a very hilly of-road course with about 200m of flat in total, so you got absoutely zero rest. Very steep ca. 30m hills all the way, up and down. I'm not just happy with the placing, but also with my overall race. I felt like I managed it perfectly, timed everything as good as possible and even though I felt like dying near the last 1.5km, I still managed to distance those behind me by a mile, aswell as beat three guys in a sprint in the final 100m.

Now for some much-needed rest (my shins are crying), and I'm going to start adding more strenght and distance into my training now that the winter is approaching.

In 2014 I started doing triathlon and by the end of the year won the Junior National Championships (Jamaica, so not really special). After the Jake's Offroad Triathlon this year (which I unfortunately did not finish due to a mechanical), I took a hiatus from triathlon to focus solely on cycling. Now that the cycling season is almost done, and tri nationals should be in a few months again, I find myself in a need to re-learn my other disciplines. Swimming isn't much of a problem for me, I still swim competitively fairly frequently (up to May this year), but I find myself having to re-learn how to run. My goal is Age Group Worlds next year and to do it I need at least a 20:00 5k. Any advice on how to get back into the groove (while still having time for swimming and cycling), and what to do to build up to my goal?

I ran my first Half marathon and got 1:16:22. It was in Stockholm and it didn't feel like it was so long. This race made me for the first time looking forward for a marathon in the future.

Official results are in (finally) and I got 17th! So I achieved my season goal (one top30, and one top 20) and then some by getting 20th and 17th in the last two races!

I came late, and I came great.

Yes, MALE record. I just don't think that someone runs a 1:16 at his first HM. 1:20 is the holy grail for semi-pros.

1:16 is not really realistic for a first time attempt.

My dad f.e. tried several years to break the 2h mark. His best time is 1:50

thats what i found on a running site as well: "In terms of specific half marathon times, breaking 2:00 (9:09 per mile pace) is a goal for many amateur half marathoners, and that time is considered a decent half marathon time among runners."

The best runner in our local club ran 1:19 once(he won the saxonian champs with that performance(also it was his 13th Half-marathon, as he was running for around 20 years at that time))

Sweet challenge, I imagine 5k under 20 minutes to be quite a handful after swimming some ks and doing a long ride bike. #WelcomeToJamaica

I wish I could give you some help but it's best you google it. There are some great triathlon sites on the web I've thought about doing triathlons as well due to my quick improvements in swimming but triathlon is a whole different other thing. Keep in mind that you don't only have to train to run but you have to train to run after you rode and swam.

@HM discussion: Matt please, Paul is right. It was his first HM. Aquarius, who is a great runner and trains a lot next to work, is in this time region. No way you can have 1:16 when it's your first HM. Maybe it's also 1:45 or so, but 1:16 would be absolutely exceptional for the first HM. If that was the case, I'd say he should become a long distance runner and give up on whatever's he's doing now.

No worries. Yeah, I'm always amazed by some times. It's really hard to fathom the effort some guys put in, running is a sport that really lets you fight for every second. Over and over again.

Since sssj said that it was quick over, I personally think that he meant something around 1:45 (which is roughly my PR but I ain't a HM man) to 2 hours or so but that's just me guessing. I don't know how good and well-trained he is of course; could be that he trains a lot of 10k. Under two hours means an estimated pace of slightly above 5 minutes per kilometer, which is a pace that one can hold throughout his first HM I'd say. But 2:15 is a perfectly reasonable time for your first HM as well.

1:16 would be a pace of ~3:30 for a kilometer. That'd be damn fast - not only for your first HM, but for any really.

Reminds me, I always wanted to ask @knockout what his times were, arn't you a club runner?
