Just thought I'd help you out a bit with these polls.

Another tough one. De Vlaeminck was the ultimate Roubaix rider. But in the age of specialisation (so not fair to compare but anyway), I believe Boonen lets the numbers speak for themselves. Records in E3, G-W, Ronde and Roubaix. Clear as icewater to me Smile

It's Boonen or De Vlaeminck, i'd give it to Roger for racing in a tougher and less scientific/specialized time. Though people like Museeuw or Merckx were also bosses on the rough stuff

Boonen. No doubt.

Record victories in:
Kuurne
E3
Gent-Wevelgem
de Ronde
Roubaix

Problem for De Vlaeminck is that his only Ronde win is the 1977 edition. One of the most coward, shaming victories ever

De Vlaeminck would win 'best Roubaix rider ever', hands down, no contest. But I'm bound to agree that generally cobbled classics, Boonen takes the cake (for me) and De Vlaeminck didn't do enough in all classics.

But for Roubaix, nobody matches Roger. Not even Boonen. He also has 4 victories, but there's a big difference (in competition and other places)

Roger De Vlaeminck
wins 4 Paris - Roubaix, and I think it got three times second and once third...

I usually think Roger De Vlaeminck but Rik Van Looy with 5 combined Flanders/Roubiax victories takes some beating.

Modern day Boonen has the numbers but I'd always fancy a fully fit Cancellara to beat a fully fit Boonen.

I still cheer for Roger De Vlaeminck

You've been cheering for a long time then, he last won a race in 1984.

I'm surprised no votes for Sean Kelly or Francesco Moser.

TheManxMissile
Because Kelly only won 3 major cobbled classics and i guess people forget about Moser or just don't think he was the best

Moser to win three Roubaix's in row is pretty amazing and also a Gent-Wevelgem. Kelly I understand because had he won a Flanders things might be different but he still got three second spots at Flanders.

But if you have someone like Merckx who won 3 PR's and 2 RVV's, why would you ever vote for Kelly as the best. Clearly he's not. And i guess it's the same for Moser, he was great but obviously people think De Vlaeminck or Boonen etc were better

Merckx can easily sweep all these polls and he'd probably win the best Spanish rider poll as well if he was on there. So I guess these polls could've been made without Merckx to make them more interesting.

Also a lot of these riders are from the non-specialization period of cycling, so it's sometimes hard to put a rider like Kelly in a correct category because he's was equally great across all the cats in terms of monuments. then there was a rider like Moser who won races that were polar opposites with Roubaix and Fleche Wallonnne.

Ian Butler
Like if De Vlaeminck would win Lombardy?

Oh wait, he did. Twice Pfft

From a non-specialty era, that's impressive. Kelly is good, but obviously many people (including myself) believe there have been better cobbled classic riders.
