Daniel Martin should have stayed in Garmin-Cannondale.They would probably be dual leaders in this Ardennes campaign.But if Alaphilippe continues to improve even more Daniel Martin would either change team or be a super domestique. |

I don't understand why people think this, many teams go into the Ardennes with multiple chances in the races so how is Martin and Alaphillippe any different? Also he has been with Slipstream his entire pro career so why not make a move, he was looking stale at Garmin so a change to a new team is a good idea, it's worked for other riders in the past so why shouldn't Martin do it? And to be honest Cannondale-Garmin look a shambles management wise so getting out of that team has to be a plus.

At some stage you need to move past him changing teams, it's starting to just be sad and annoying. He wanted out so went to another team, good on him as its his career and Etixx is a far more professional setup. He will get his chances to lead and will also work for teammates, sounds perfectly fine to me

He looked like he wasn't enjoying his racing as much as he did and that his career had stopped progressing, now that could be that he's achieved all that he can or that like many riders before he needs a change of environment to help kick along his career

I guess enjoying it could definitely be part of it, but I disagree about the career progression thing. He is 29 years old. I'd say he's at his peak. He may be able to get some more recovery, but as far as his actual skills, He can't expect to be getting better. He doesn't need his career to be kicked along, he's doing just fine. The only thing preventing him from wins are his badly timed attacks and crashing. And I don't think that changing teams will help him at all with those intangibles.

Exactly this is true in all sports. Sometimes just going somewhere new can reinvigorate an athlete.
And Martin has looked to be riding in the same confused way as basically the entire Garmin setup, mixed objectives and poorly executed plans. Etixx are a well drilled squad who yes do make mistakes tactically at times but racing the classics small mistakes can cost you dearly so I think some are a little harsh on them in this regard. To me Martin and Etixx look like a good fit where he can race the races he's been good in and when it comes to GT's I doubt they will want anything more than stage wins from him with any possible high placing GC wise being an after thought. Cadel Evans is a good example of a rider who did well with a team change

I guess Alaphilippe will already lead the coming ardennes, next year. so Dan just degraded himself to a super-domestique. It would only make sense, if he already knew, what shitty transfers GarCan would make(maybe he knew that Hesjedal and others would leave and he wanted a more "pro" Team) Still a bad transfer for Etixx, giving away Uran. Uran was really their only GC contender though, I am curious who is going to get leadership in what at this point with them. |

Do Etixx really need a GC leader? They are a squad built around classics and with a couple of riders who can be competitive some of the 1 week races. Uran could never get the support he needed and Etixx didn't really look that interested in signing riders to do that, I can't fault them on this strategy as they are a successful team in what they do

I totally agree with that and I guess when you factor in what country they are riding for they dont need one.
Just feels like a team as large and successful as them would want to have someone for the Tour at least. |
