Begun to cycle again. Got myself a nice Pinarello and is debating with myself atm whether to start in a club. But I got a pretty big problem.

When cycling, especially if I am pulling hard, I get acid lactose in my quadriceps, maybe a little under, right above the knee. I have tried a few things, warming up and down after my rides, stretching it out, ice on after etc. Nothing seems quite to work out and say if i go for a 50 km ride today, then it will be much worse tomorrow. Im hoping I just need to get used to cycling quite a bit more than I used to, but I have had this problem before when playing soccer as well (I got acid lactose in my calf muscles back then).

Anyone have experienced that?

I had exactly the same thing. It's a horrible feeling. I just needed to get used to cycling. Don't overdo it. Do fun-rides at the start.(f.e. 25-50km with a pace where you can watch the landscape a bit(at least thats what I mostly did on fun-rides) You can sprint a few times for sure, but keep it rather easy for you. Ride like this a few times and everything could be fine again.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I have, I have just been told to strengthen my legs in the gym, but that didnt work out. Ill try to do what Paul said and just sees what happens in some weeks.

Rather than one simple explanation it is primarily interconnected with how the body synthesizes ATP, the composition of your muscles, as well as the efficiency of your aerobic system (VO2max and all that).

Spoiler
At the most basic level it has to do with how the body synthesizes ATP, the anaerobic fermentation of ATP produces lactic acid as a by-product. During the absence of sufficient oxygen in the muscle tissue for purely aerobic ATP production the body has to resort to glycolysis to synthesize ATP to power muscle contraction.

Which leads us into muscle fiber types, since fast twitch fibers (Type IIB) fatigue the fastest due to factors such as worse capillarisation, ergo they aren't as easily supplied with oxygen for the aerobic synthesis of ATP. While the science says you cannot convert fast twitch to slow twitch fibres (Type I) you can modify fast twitch fibers through endurance training to intermediate fibers (Type IIA), which have improved fatigue resistance due to factors such as improved capillarisation.

The muscle fibre composition of your body is currently thought to be dependent on genetics, and composition varies from muscle to muscle throughout the body. For example, the superficial Gastrocnemius (calf) muscle typically has a high composition of Type IIB fibers while the deeper Soleus (calf) muscle is typically composed of Type I fibres, the former suited to explosive movements and the later to endurance activities.

Additionally, post-exercise about 80% of lactic acid enters the bloodstream and is reconverted to pyruvic acid by the kidneys, cardiac muscle and liver via oxidization. However, the oxygen debt accrued during exercise must be "repaid" in a number of different areas; for example, elevated body temperature increases the metabolic rate and rapid metabolism consumes extra oxygen.

As long as the stimulus is there for the body to undergo adaption then the situation should improve over time with endurance (aerobic) training. Incidentally, improving muscular strength can improve the fatigue resistance of a muscle by decreasing how hard it has to work to complete a task.

Well, my VO2 max surely isnt the problem. I feel like I can go much faster than I do at the moment. Hopefully that will come through some 2 hours rides a day!

If it doesnt improve in say a couple of weeks, Ill try to strengthen my legs. But for now im purely just sticking to getting used to cycle again. Thanks!

This is just your legs and body not being used to the exercise its trying to do, I was like this and it took me months to start getting upto a standard that I coukd do longer rides without pain or long sustained efforts without my legs wanting to explode. Take your time and let your body work upto being a speed demon, high cadence slower riding is the best way to do this, also it's a mental thing aswell so going slow helps you look around and take it all in and you'll be surprised how much you won't notice the burning in your legs after a while. Just take your time with it and start doing little efforts and keep building off that

Just wanted to quickly say, boy the new strava sucks big time. Phone keeps on crashing about 3 times before I can even start to record and also the app is kinda more prone to "stopping", but that's probably due to me having not having a good screen locker.

Why not just keep it simple and clean and with a minimum of power requirement, apps like this have to be fast and swift, not an annoyance to your daily workout.

I'll give it a few more tries and hope I can work around it. It makes no fun when I have to stand for 3 minutes around like a dumbwit until the app finally decides to work..

On the plus side, planned to buy a new phone anyway so this might just make the decision for me but Strava keeps on getting more annoying and not sure if I won't switch soon to another app.

Hey buddy I have a Garmin 200 basically brand new just sitting around doing nothing, if you want to pay postage you are welcome to it. I have my 510 and a backup buggy 500 for my mega long rides so the 200 is surplus to requirements

Thanks man for that generous offer but the app annoys me actually more for running because there it has to be quick and swift. For cycling I can wait a bit and use the app fine I guess. Although Garmin would certainly be a sweet upgrade.

I'm in a bit of a motivational dump since May actually, it first was because of university papers and too many work hours but now I'm kinda stuck in it. I did two riders or so with a friend in that time, one of them was pretty hardcore (including a long gravel climb with the road bike). Add to that heatwave which is sorta going on since June and the ultimate lack of fountains in Vienna and this region Lower Austria... and you have me making lots of excuses for not grabbing my bike. Embarassed

On the plus side, boy I did like tons of running in recent months as compensation for cycling & time constraints.

same story here, managed to kinda fake it today (inspired by Strydz) but my low resistance to heat (+22 degrees is too much for me) so I'm either going early on the day or early in the evening (around 9 am or 10 pm).

at least I can ride in the TdF Lotto NL Jumbo jersey with my name on it <3 that also motivated me to seek the outdoors again Wink

Vienna is about the same temperature (at times) since about June if I remember correctly. 30+ degrees is not unusual. I did my ride today in 34. Yeah, this summer is one long heatwave.

I do fine when it comes to running but today I made a 80km ride actually to prove it to myself.. but the heat itself isn't so much the problem since you always enjoy some wind. Problem is, my training rides are in an area with no forest areas. There are no fountains and unfortunately I drink a lot in comparison to other people (a friend of mine who was far less trained than me could go the same distance with one bottle when I had already finished two..). Bodies are just different in that regard and I'm just one the lesser benefitial side in that regard. It's unfortunate but alas, no time to moan too much.

I'll try to get back into cycling slowly now after the past 3 month abscene. Maybe someone has some useful tips on how to combine running and cycling effectively? I love both but unfortunately I tend to always favor one of the other and thereby neglegting the second and losing "progress".

I actually think that the 155km ride with multiple climbs I did a few weeks back caused more harm than good to my form and cycling motivation.

My kingdom for a heatwave! Mid summer = 20C max and cloud for the last fortnight Sad

Tbh I've always thought of cycling as a great exercise for when it's hot - you always create a man-made breeze just by riding Pfft

In Australia Mid summer can hit over 40, even had a week of straight 40+ (up to like 45/47) in March a couple years ago.

Then again, I start to struggle above 30. Pfft

I knew from Australia Open, playing in 37 degrees in January.

Finally have got out for some decent riding over the past few weeks. Did some nice hill repeats yesterday, and a nice recovery ride this morning.

Hope my motivation continues.

Well, 38 degrees is so f**ing hot, while there is no wind and 35 degrees, making it nearly impossible to ride 40+km for me.

The main problem here is, that the temperature is not consistent. a few days ago we had 12 degrees, one day later, we had 36. On Monday, we'll probably have 15 degrees here again.
