Giro del Trentino – Stage 3
Mori – Roncone

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0269_zpsnqi8dllp.png

Quintana leads the race and probably will do so after today, is Movistar already contend with stages and allow a breakaway to win the stage today. Which teams will guess on this and try to put their strong riders in the breakaway.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0299_zpsky48yt2w.jpg

Again we have a quickly established breakaway, Martínez (EUS), Pauriol (SOJ), Rutkiewicz (CCC), Huzarski (TNE), García (CJR), Tankink (VCD), Jungels (GIA) and Pires (COL). Martínez is best placed in the GC at 38th place at 10’49”. This gap might be enough for Movistar to convince them letting them ride for the stage win. They quickly gain 9 minutes but 9 and a half minutes seems to be the max they get.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0300_zpsek7oxd1u.jpg

Neri missed the breakaway again and Failli again attacks to join up with them just before the intermediate sprint. The gap to the breakaway is down to 4 minutes. Pardilla (MTN) soon follows his example

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0301_zpsm0jwvjxb.jpg

Before the duo is caught the peloton again Reichenbach (IAM) and Sella (COF)

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0302_zpsukdwyi3o.jpg

We aren’t even at the end climb and the favorites attack already, starting with Spilak (KAT) and Acevedo (CSS) and followed by Caruso (CAN), Quintana (MOV), Pellizotti (COF) and Owniak (BMC).

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0303_zpsa6ryez2a.jpg
De las Campos (EUS), La Bestia (IAM) also join in the big chasers group. Scarponi, Hesjedal and Kim have a bit more trouble joining up

Pauriol has won both KOM sprints meaning that he will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. He beats Jungels and Martínez are the only ones able to follow him. Pires and Huzarski follow at 16 seconds. Garcia and Tankink at 35 seconds. The Quintana group with de las Campos, Spilak, Pellizotti and Rutkiewicz are at 1’11”. Group Owniak with Acevedo, La Bestia, Reichenbach, Caruso and Sella follow at 1’28”. Kim is solo at 1’54” while Scarponi and Hesjedal are at 2’03”.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0304_zpsqmts8kgn.jpg

The downhill shock things up. Kim abysmal downhill skills showed their worth and soon he found himself last of the favorites. We soon found two groups, a merger between the breakaway and the Quintana group and a merger between the Owniak group and everybody uptill Scarponi and Hesjedal excluding Kim.

With 1 km to go we see 5 riders at the front with De las Campos leading the charge. Pellizotti has trouble to stay on his wheel while Quintana apperantly doesn’t bother with the stage win today. Spilak, Jungels and a struggeling Huzarski are also in the first group.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0305_zpshldmshhq.jpg

Quintana has made his finally acceleration but De las Campos and Pellizotti might have too much of a lead to be overtaken.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0306_zpswn1c6szv.jpg

Quintana looks to be blocked by De las Campos in the sprint while he easily closed the gap towards him and Pellizotti.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0307_zps8nnzaujj.jpg

De las Campos start cheering while Quintana can’t pass him and Cristiano De las Campos wins the stage. Pellizotti gets 3rd place.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0308_zpsghemnuke.jpg

Spilak and Jungels take 4th and 5th. Huzardski finishes 6th. Pauriol and Pires hold off the second group of favorites for 7th and 8th. Acevedo and Scarponi close out the rest of the top 10. Quintana still has the lead and Kim drops to 10th place thanks to his 20th place today partly thanks to bad downhill

What a horrible last climb from Caruso... not sure about that top 10 in GC now. Frown

Awesome win for De las Campos, he might not have been the strongest, but luckily Quintana was too stupid to go on the other side of the road. Pfft

You can only beat Quintana with blocks Banana

Well, that whole stage made zero sense.

Come on Damian, you can get that top 5. Please?

I don't know why any of us bother sending team mates to races because all of the leaders just attack as soon as they get to the final climb. No point having any mountain domestiques with this dreadful AI. Rolling Eyes

Not your fault though Luigi, good stuff from you. Smile

Amazing win and GC climb. Will be interesting how he handles the last few stages with the GC being so close.

Thanks for the reports Luigi Smile

It started very good for us with the win in the TTT, but things are getting worse.. I'd really like it if Po-ding could find himself and go up in the GC again.

Blimey, 3rd on the stage and 3rd in GC, Pellizotti on +10 form today!

Thanks for the reports.

P.S. I am off on holiday for a week and a bit so might be a bit quiet.

Come on Matteo, top 10 or top 5 on a stage.... Maybe?

Hope Juan can hit out for another break after a day of rest for the KoM

Giro del Trentino – Stage 4
Val Daone – Monte Bondone

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0270_zpsjfgzrbtx.png

Welcome to the final stage of the 2014 Giro del Trentino where Quintana still leads the overall classification. However the real fight should be for the other podium spots where many riders are still in contention. Despite the minutes gap between 2nd and 11th place, the end climb is long and hard enough to give to those minutes. De las Campos, Pellizotti and Spilak have the best paper though as there are only separated by 16 seconds.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0310_zpsdozjnktw.jpg

And immediately from the word go we have an attacker, Marcos García from Caja Rural opens up the race.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0311_zpsqtkwjvwr.jpg

He is soon followed by Berhane (MTN), Damuseau (CCC), Tvetcov (KAT), Hoogerland (VCD), Rujano (CSS) and Huzarski (TNE) these riders make up today’s breakaway.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0312_zps5ormplxn.jpg

Berhane, García and Hoogerland have serious intentions for the KOM jersey but it’s Berhane that takes the 16 points at the top. He ties in total points with Hoogerland and Pauriol. The gap to the peloton is 9 minutes.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0313_zpsvxcx2nle.jpg

Like every stage this year, we see Failli from Neri Sottoli attacking just before the race gets started for real. This time however he’s not alone as Reichenbach (IAM) joins him with 38.6 km to go. Do the favorites wait until the final climb today or do they follow suit?

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0314_zpsubnht8ac.jpg

The answer is no. it’s Ryder Hesjedal who attacks just when his teammate Poels has a puncture. Quintana follows his “wheel” and strangely it isn’t Owniak from BMC that counter attacks but Cataldo.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0315_zps4xhnqsow.jpg

Quintana and Hesjedal have no trouble picking up Failli and Reichenbach. De las Campos is the first chasers with his teammate Gorka Izaggire leading him towards the group. Pellizotti, Spilak are also in this group. The peloton lead by Scarponi is 1 minute behind the De las Campos group.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0316_zps1mwtuc1q.jpg
if only bikes were shown, this shot would have been amazing

At the foot of the climb the peloton is still chasing the Quintana/De las Campos group although the gap is only 29 seconds. Hoogerland and Huzarki have been dropped from the breakaway and are just 21 seconds away from the Quintana/De las Campos group.

everything is back together, Owniak and Scarponi are badly position though

Rujano makes the first shot in the breakaway, trying for victory.

Hesjedal, Quintana and De las Campos have attacked and are clear from the rest. La Bestia, Pellizotti, Cataldo, Spilak and Visconti make up the chasers while Acevedo, Nokkvason, Martinez, Nerz and Ulissi make up the second chasing group.

Owniak and Scarponi finally realize that their GC is in danger and have also attacked from the peloton. Their bad position might have costed them dearly. Not something one would see from someone as experience as Scarponi.

Hesjedal tries to drop his companions and is able to get a small gap as he catches some riders from the breakaway.

De las Campos cracks!

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0322_zps0lpv23ly.jpg

Damuseau tries a desperate attack to get clear from his breakaway companions when Quintana and Hesjedal join up with them. De las Campos still is struggling.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0323_zpsj7gbu1jy.jpg

Quintana and Hesjedal are having none of it though and soon as he’s caught by them he drops later. Only Tvetcov is able to hang on going into the final kilometer. Some performance from him.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0324_zps2tcieer0.jpg

While Quintana makes the first acceleration, he gives the stage win to Ryder Hesjedal. Tvetcov takes 3rd place on the stage.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0326_zpsuacfdarf.jpg

Pellizotti beats Damueseau for 4th place while Spilak and De las Campos take 6th and 7th place. De las Campos looks contend with securing 2nd place overall.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0327_zpsnftx1tk8.jpg

Rujano, La Bestia and Owniak round up the top 10.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0328_zpsufqkbdrw.jpg

Quintana shows total domination of the race by winning all the classifications in the race while Team Champion System has to settle with the team classification and 10th, 11th and 12th place in the overall classification.

Yes game. Of course I want Cataldo to follow the GC guys, not the guy in the top 10.

Thanks for costing me a goal which could have been achieved had Owniak followed instead. Fantastic.

Great to see Cristiano holding on to second place. Wonderful result for both him and the team.

Bad last stage from Caruso, but luckily he managed to save his top 10 and our goal. Smile

Great race from De las Campos, a great achievement for him to finish 2nd in the GC. Grin
