Tour de France - Pre-race thread

I hardly doubt Kwiatek is in shape for anything, after his dismal showing in Switzerland.

To be fair he was even worse in Dauphine last year too and still had an alright week 1. I think week 1 is perfect for him.

Yeah, I like that MTN team. Glad to see Meintjens, Kudus and Tekle. We need some black flavor in the Tour!

Bora Argon also revealed their team: https://www.bora-argon18.com/en/tour/
Honestly, one of those teams I just want to stay home in order to minimize the risks just a bit. I cant see them having any impact on anything, in any terrain

Buchmann to Tour de France?! Oh my. ARD hype incoming, only 20 years old and riding first TDF

Cmon, there are some decent guys like Bárta or Nerz, who can light it up...

Apart from Bretagne, its clearly the worst team

Well, i dont disagree with that, but that does not mean they should not have a chance to ride...also, that team had a top10 last year thanks to König, so maybe they can continue to develop the talents thanks to this chance.

He's 22, and everyone who actually cares about the race watches it on Eurosport anyway, so that hype is irrelevant.

But I have to admit I'm slightly excited to see him there as well. Grin

Shonak
My bad. Well, we'll have to see how the market share is but ARD viewing numbers were always really strong if I remember correctly. Eurosport is after all only a niché sport channel. I also imagine them always being very vocal about german talents as well as the former superstars, so given the recent success of Kittel, Degenkolb & Martin, I wouldn't be surprised if they hype him up a bit. Maybe smthg like a portrait is planned.

@Bora-Argon: Maybe I sound like roturn now Wink but I think that a Top 15 result for Nerz is possible; maybe add 1-2 crashes of superior riders to the list and it's all well within reach for Bora. He won't "surprise" like König did last year tho. Sam Bennett is also a nice rider for (reduced) bunch sprints.

I get why its good for Germany and all, but as a firm believer in reducing the peloton, the teams and the number of riders, for me, its one of those teams which shouldnt compete

They should get a start based on last years performance in my eyes at least. The best way to reduce the number of riders would be to reduce it down from 9 to 8 or even 7, I see that as a better idea than reducing the number of teams competing. If we want sponsors to stick around in cycling then they need the opportunity to have there brand represented in the biggest races, otherwise the return on investment disappears and cycling doesn't need more sponsors dropping out.

Sagan still the favorite but Kristoff should be in the mix as well

Wouldn't really call Kittel or Cavendish green jersey contenders, they used to be, but now it comes down to really chasing the intermediate sprints or being able to survive hills imo.

Scoring was redone this year to favor stage winners on flat stages more. It remains to be seen if this makes a big difference but it should at least motivate pure sprinters like Kittel and Cav to go after green

Yeah, ok, that could give them more of a chance, I guess we'll see in the race. Smile

Wellens, Gallopin and De Gendt should be fun in this Tour. Smile

Kittel isn't even sure to go at the tour, he's not even close to being in form

Yeah, very nice line up. Good that they're not going for a GC. Greipel's sprint train is awesome, but no Roelandts means you lose the (in my opinion) best 3rd guy for a train in the entire peloton. Debusschere should be able to take over though. If you have Wellens, De Gendt, Gallopin, Bak and Hansen pacing the last 10K, then a train of Sieberg, Debusschere and Henderson, I don't think Greipel has any excuses for not winning half of the flat stages.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I don't think he was "even worse" in Dauphine last year. He was keeping himself inside top30 in GC for 5 first days or so.

Smoku
Kwiato won't defend his national TT title today and it is still undecided if he'll race for the RR championship on Sunday, so definitley his form is more doubtful or at least hidden in the shadows than a year ago.
