I certainly believe that they are all at it in one form or another

Same, that's the only way i can still enjoy cycling, just assume everyone is on the good stuff Pfft It's a bit sad but it's reality, no point being naive about it.

Something weird is that Sky almost nothing did today. Mystic, they used to control the pace or what?

Remember that this was just a medium mountain stage, in the big mountains i'm sure we'll see the SKY-train aslong as they stay healthy and are in shape... that Kiryenka-Siutsou-Nieve-König train is still scary Pfft

Good win by Formolo. And Clarke.... Zabel'd is already embarassing. But lying about it? C'mon.

Shame I missed the stage today, sounded like it was very interesting - proof that well designed stages beget good racing! Tomorrow could also be interesting if the favourites are looking to race aggressively, of course it will just come down to the final few km but it could be entertaining nevertheless - shame I will miss that one as well. Will have to do a Giro first week catch-up binge once exams are over!

Stage 5: La Spezia - Abetone (152km)

While the majority of the peloton will probably be wishing it was the first rest day, Il Garibaldi torments the riders with our first summit finish of the race. Beginning in La Spezia, the scene of yesterday's finish, the peloton will cycle 152 undulating kilometres to our finish at Abetone.

Just two categorised climbs dot the parcours, with the Category 3 Foce Carpinelli (10.1 at 5%, max 10%) the first on the agenda. Linking the Foce Carpinelli with the summit finish at Abetone will be the unclassified ascents to Barga (5.9km at 2.9%) and Popiglio.

images2.gazzettaobjects.it/Giroditalia/2015/images/tappa/tappa_dettagli_tecnici_planimetria_05.jpg

The ascent up to Abetone will begin shortly after Popiglio once the peloton reach La Lima, where they will commence the 17.3 kilometre-long ascent to the finish. Featuring a maximum gradient of 10%, the average gradient over the 17.3 kilometre ascent will be just 5.4 percent.

It is in the middle third of the climb that the riders will have the most difficult with as the average gradient between the 4.5 kilometre mark and 13 kilometre mark reaches seven percent. While the final 4.3 kilometres will be at an average gradient of 4.7%, with a 500 metre section of 8% in gradient lying just 3000 metres from the line.

The final kilometre of the climb, on a supposedly well surfaced 5.5 metre wide road, will be at between four to five perfect in gradient. If the race finishes with a reduced bunch sprint between a select group of riders then the final 300 metres should suit someone with a strong sprint, with the grade about 4.3% in severity.

Stage Contenders

Two consecutive gruelling medium mountain stages, with yesterday's fourth stage being very unpredictable, makes today's fifth stage a nightmare to predict. It will very much depend on whether any of the General Classification contenders decide to take the race by the horns again and cause absolute chaos.

Depending on the mood of the General Classification favourites, if the right breakaway goes up the road it could go all the way. After significant losses in the General Classification climbers like Lampre - Merida's Przemyslaw Niemiec or Diego Ulissi, Movistar's Giovanni Visconti or Igor Anton, Orica – GreenEDGE's Pieter Weening, Cannondale – Garmin's Ryder Hesjedal and CCC Sprandi Polkowice's Sylwester Szmyd or Maciej Paterski should be free to try their luck at snatching the stage honours.

cdn.media.cyclingnews.com/2014/01/22/2/bettiniphoto_0161352_1_full_670.jpg

In the event of someone like Astana deciding they would like to make it three hellish stages in a row the victor will likely come from the General Classification contenders. After losing ground to the three stand-out favourites the likes of Lotto – Soudal's Jurgen Van den Broeck and Etixx – Quick-Step's Rigoberto Uran may want to claw back whatever time they can on Fabio Aru, Alberto Contador and Richie Porte.

If the General Classification favourites are feeling particularly feisty we might see Fabio Aru, Alberto Contador and Richie Porte fight each other in a three way head to head for the stage victory. While Il Garibaldi cannot be won in the first week alone today's stage does present itself as a good opportunity to open or close some time gaps and gain an early psychological advantage.

With Astana's Fabio Aru needing time on both Alberto Contador and Richie Porte to compensate for his weakness against the clock in the individual time trial against his two major rivals has the most to gain. However, Alberto Contador looks like he will a tough competitor to beat, so the advantage on paper lies with the Spaniard for now.

Final Thoughts

I would not blame the peloton if they want to take tomorrow easy after two consecutive tough medium mountain stages, and we are only in the first week. However, with sprint stages scheduled for the following two days the climbers and general classification contenders could afford to expend some energy going for glory.

I'm happy to see that the riders actually race in the early heavy-ish stages, instead of waiting for the last week.

I think today many teams got taken by surprise. The peloton (well, mainly Astana) upped the pace in the feeding zone, causing the peloton to break apart. It's not like they were freakishly strong or anything.

I've noticed during the last few seasons that some teams are making a habit of attacking in the feeding zone. I don't support that tactic, but if it's allowed then they are free to do it. It gives some action, but can also cause crashes.

Edit:
Simon Clarke is the worst liar I've ever seen BTW.

Edit2:
Very pleased with Formolo's win.

While I think there's some truth to that, there's still some differences in ethics between teams. Not surprisingly the teams with the worst reputation are on top in the last few seasons.

While that might be true, it's also the teams with the biggest budgets that are on top, i know which one i think matters more Pfft Money talks

Fantastic stage today, I'll always love these shorter stages (especially when PaddyPower sets Cunego to odds of 10000.0 then allows you to cash out)

First things first: For an italian climber, Formolo is unbelievable whity white. At least he climbs like a true Italian. Maybe an heir to Pantani, Garzelli & Simoni. blaster-foren.de/styles/default/xenforo/smilies.blaster/love.gif Does Formolo's win count more that he rides for Cannonfail?

I only just watched the 10 minutes. It's really annoying to watch cycling when you work so late, meh. Anyway, it sounded like a thrilling stage cuz the ENG ES commentators were raving about it and said it'll be remember for years.

Gonna watch the stage tomorrow in the morning whilst reading uni texts <3

@Spilak: Come on, I could never feel any sympathy for someone nicknamed "Bling" And yes, strydz, I still make fun of that nickname. Wink

btw Great avatar Spilak, Simoni <3

Also, Clarke cheered like he won the stage, cuz he knew he'd be in pink for quite some time surely. No one celebrates like that not winning, not even Brajkovic. Wink

Exactly. Though the movistar rider thinks that clarke was celebrating the win, but Clarke knew it wasn't. Or I'm pretty sure. If I got pink like that, I'd celebrate like it was the frickin' ronde, The worlds, The tour, For a normal rider!

@jandal: Not exactly. I meant, he celebrated like he won the stage. No one celebrates like that when he hasn't won, not even Brajkovic. Now it's correct. I'm pretty drunk right now, so sorry for the confusion.

To be fair, on paper they probably also have the best climbinb squad in this Giro. I like it as wel tho, would be sad to be without Aru, Nibbles etc. in the GTs

Yeah, those three weeks through France surely would miss something without Nibali's whatever.
