Option 1 - Not the best deal seen with Cycling eyes but lets face it he may use the time better as a footballer, for now.

Clear option 1 for me, the polite thing to do is wait and helps his football for a while.

Monthly Review

It was an undisclosed training injury (sprained ankle ligaments) to vice captain Jack Smith that prompted my start at right back last month. Coach Danny Heale liked what he saw and now I'm a valid defensive option as Smith recovers.

Smith, battling through the pain, started the first of four games for Canvey Island FC in October. I was on edge knowing my number could be called at any moment.

Match Day #14 vs. Ware (3-5-6)
October 7, 2017
Ware started the season with three wins, haven't won a game since.

Spoiler
Canvey Island 4, Ware 2

i.imgur.com/JhasnfV.jpg

Summary: This one will go down as one of the craziest games of the season. Two goals for James Walker and two own goals was enough to hold off Ware. The first own goal came off a Sam Collins free kick that deflected off the wall. The second own goal should be Canvey Island's Goal of the Season - Charley Barker was pissed that his wonder strike went down as an own goal. I would have been too.

media.giphy.com/media/mugr0s9wHAKMDJDP4R/giphy.gif

Rating: 6.6 - I got plenty of action with Smith coming off in the 51st minute. I played OK, but I had a lapse of concentration in the 83rd minute which allowed Yannick Kamanan to score.

media.giphy.com/media/BCdjvte2jnn6NtiPk6/giphy.gif

Player of Game: James Walker, Canvey Island (8.6)

Match Day #15 at Witham (0-8-6)
October 14, 2017
Can't get much easier than facing a winless team.

Spoiler
Witham 2, Canvey Island 1

i.imgur.com/YRa0MT0.jpg

Summary: Ummmmmm. Yeah. We just got shell shocked. The media was out in full force after this unacceptable defeat.

i.imgur.com/Y1rBPxv.jpg

Rating: N/A - Coach Heale threw me back up top, replacing goal scorer George Sykes, in the 77th minute. The last-ditch attempt fell short.

Player of Game: John Davies-Collie, Witham (7.8)

Match Day #16 vs. Dereham (5-7-3)
October 21, 2017
Morale plummeted after the loss to Witham, looking to recover.

Spoiler
Canvey Island 0, Dereham 0

i.imgur.com/9soJxXY.jpg

Summary: Boring. Next...

Rating: N/A - I got 13 minutes in at left back.

Player of Game: George Craddock, Canvey Island FC (7.4)

Match Day #17 vs. Brentwood (7-5-4)
October 28, 2017
"Marcus, you are back in the starting lineup at right back."

Spoiler
Brentwood 2, Canvey Island 1

i.imgur.com/2E3SA61.jpg

Summary: A brace for Evan Key keeps Canvey Island in another downward spiral. George Sykes finishes his 11th goal of the season to led the league ahead of teammate James Walker with nine goals.

Rating: 6.3 - I got through 84 minutes, but it wasn't very pretty. I just can't seem to find my place or my role on this team yet. I have to soon if the media and fans are already calling for Heale to get fired. Maybe I'm next? I could get thrown out of my own hometown.

Player of Game: Evan Key, Brentwood (8.9)

League Standings (17 out of 46 games played)

No movement this month despite only getting four points. The Top 2 promotion spots, however, keep getting further and further away.

JLT Condor Inquiry: Marcus Diamond was sent an email to schedule a phone conversation with JLT Condor manager John Herety here in the next two days. Surely, that must be a good sign!

Media Scrum: A local journalist approached Marcus Diamond after the Brentwood loss and asked him what he thought about all the Danny Heale rumors going around. What should Marcus Diamond say? (1) Offer support for his manager, (2) throw his manager under the bus or (3) refuse to comment on the matter.

Shame about the form for the squad, hopefully they recover some form. In that vein, Marcus should show some support for the gaffer - best thing to do any way but he's indebted to the boss for his faith in him and leniency for missing tryouts.

He should support the manager. At the end of the day, he allowed him on the team even though the preseason was already started and he is giving him chances almost every match.

We Meet Again

The phone rang. It was him. Well, here goes nothing.

"Hello. This is Marcus."

"Hi Marcus, John Herety with JLT Condor cycling. How are you doing today?"

"I'm doing fine, a little exhausted though. Just got back from football training."

"Glad to hear you are staying in shape. Well, let me just cut to the chase. Right now I'm happy with where our roster stands for the upcoming season. However, I think there is something about you... Let's just say the intangibles that could turn you from being an average cyclist to a great one."

"Thanks, I appreciate that John."

"The thing is, I don't think we can offer the money or terms that you want. So, without trying to offend you, I can offer you a contract and I know these terms might seem harsh. But, we will give you every opportunity to grow here with the team and work your way through the ranks. Think of this like an internship."

"OK, what are the terms?"

"Two-year deal at minimum wage. Between 35-50 race days per season."

"And are you willing to work around my football schedule while I'm playing with Canvey Island FC? If not, there is no way I can even consider this."

"Sure, we can let you schedule what races you want to take part in."

"Good. Is it all right if I take a few days to think about it?"

"Yeah, that's perfectly fine. Reach out to Claire Beaumont when you come to a decision. And hopefully I'll get to see you in-person again here real soon."

What's Next?

Option 1: Accept the terms. Marcus Diamond jumps at the opportunity to sign his first professional cycling contract with JLT Condor.

Option 2: Negotiate. Marcus Diamond pushes his luck and tries to get (a.) a better wage, (b.) a shorter or longer deal or (c.) more race days.

Option 3: Decline. Marcus Diamond doesn't waste his time and rejects the terms to look elsewhere. By not negotiating, he also finds the time to get an extra training ride in on his bike to help his progression.

Media Scrum: Marcus Diamond tells the journalist he fully backs his coach Danny Heale and that the players (himself included) have to step up their game. Consequence: If Danny Heale gets fired this season, then Marcus Diamond will find himself at odds with the new incoming coach.

Option 2: Negotiate . I think you should Marcus should try and get that 2 year deal down to a 1 year deal and if he impresses enough that 2nd year would see significant profit.

Accept, sounds a good deal to be able to work it around his football, and a 2 year deal gives him a year to develop before having an explosive breakout year that would result in a better contract after this one.

Accept it.

He is still very young for cycling so even if these two years dont go well he will have a lot of time to find a team to develop in, and with this deal they dont have a problem with his football.

Tension and frustrations are running high. We were predicted to the win league and here we sit in 11th place coming up on the halfway point of the season. Coach Danny Heale is on the hot seat and I have yet to show my true potential.

U23 Friendly at Gorleston U23
November 5, 2017
I've been sent down to help build my confidence and get playing time.

Spoiler
Canvey Island U23 2, Gorleston U23 1

i.imgur.com/bSHjlDz.jpg

Summary: A feisty, physical game ends in a 2-1 win. We deserved it by outshooting them 16-6 (albeit only 3-1 on target).

Rating: 6.3 - A little deceiving considering I started at forward, made some key passes and picked up my first assist on the Ryan Charles goal.

Player of Game: Jerrome Sobers, Canvey Island FC (7.7)

I watched Match Day #18 from the bench against Tilbury (3-9-6). George Sykes put us ahead in the 16th minutes with his league-leading 12th goal. However, Adam Vyse got the equalizer in the 50th minute to force a 1-1 draw.

That was the final straw for Canvey Island President John Batch. We got the news after the game that head coach Danny Heale had been fired. The 36-year-old ex-player had held the job since May 2013, but a 5-8-5 start to what was supposed to be a league title winning season was enough to pull the plug.

Clint Easton, who has been a coach with the team since 2012, took over as the interim head coach until a replacement could be found. Many think that John Batch already has a candidate lined up and that he will be introduced soon.

Match Day #19 at Bury Town (9-3-6)
November 18, 2017
"Boys this last week has been rough, show your angry on the pitch."

Spoiler
Bury Town 2, Canvey Island 1

i.imgur.com/tU3kOS6.jpg

Summary: Trying to make his plea for why he should be head coach, Clint Easton lined us up in a new 4-1-2-3 formation. It was working as defender Jerrome Sobers carried over his form from the U23 friendly last week to score the opening goal. Yet, Bury Town pulled a goal back right before halftime and got the winner on a breakaway in the 59th minute.

Rating: N/A - I only got 10 minutes of action in defense. Nothing really came my way as we were pressing for the tying goal.

Player of Game: Richard Benson, Bury Town (8.3)

New Coach Introduced

Not sure if this classifies as an early birthday present or not, but Canvey Island announced our new head coach two days before my 18th birthday on Nov. 19.

Coach's Comments

"I'm grateful for this opportunity and I know we can restore Canvey Islands to where they should be. Being able to bring my step-son Jake here was just the icing on the cake. Jake is a talented player that fell out favor with Sky Bet League One Charlton Athletic after an injury and disagreements with the coaches. We can't wait to get started."

Match Day #20 vs. Mildenhall (4-10-6)
November 25, 2017
New coach, new tactics, new outlook, new life?

Spoiler
Midenhall 2, Canvey Island 1

i.imgur.com/L5V7OGC.jpg

Summary: Not the debut Forster was looking for out of the club. Mildenhall broke through in the second half as we were exposed in trying to figure out this 4-2-4 formation. James Walker at least prevented the shutout with a goal with 15 seconds left in added time.

Coach's step-son Jake Forster-Caskey had to wait for his contract to be terminated by Charlton Athletic and couldn't play for us just yet. He should be cleared for our next game on December 2nd.

Rating: 6.4 - I got the start at right back and flopped, despite playing the whole game. I picked up my first career yellow card on a careless challenge in the middle of the pitch. Not a good way to make a first impression.

Player of Game: Reece Morgan, Midenhall (7.4)

League Standings (20 out of 46 games played)

i.imgur.com/8w3Mgss.jpg

We have fallen a spot this month down to 12th. Just three games played this month though so it's not the end of the world. Does the Forster's infusion have enough time to turn this around? Hopefully.

What's Next?

Position Change Again: Marcus Diamond's brief stint at right back is over. New coach Nicky Forster needs more wingers for his preferred formations and thinks Marcus would be a good fit. Marcus wasn't given any choice in the matter. Also, Forster has set Marcus' training for crosses only this month, which will bump the attribute up to 11.0.

Signed!: Marcus Diamond has agreed to a two-year deal with JLT Condor cycling. He is planning to hash out a race schedule this month and should probably start his training again.
