The race opens with a flat 9km prologue in Amily. Stef Clement is in good form and will be looking towards a high placing today. Boasson Hagen and Contador are favoured for the stage win however.

Stef Clement is best at the first check and sets a new best at the finish of 10'40! Can it hold?
In his rather fetching outfit, Boasson Hagen soon matches this time however and moves ahead by virtue of milliseconds.
Another national champion, Luis Leon Sanchez, blitzes around the track and lowers the bar even further to 10'37!
Contador can only manage +20', good enough for 13th

A very neat 3rd place for Clement matches our goal for this stage. "Lulu" takes a surprise leader's jersey whilst the favourites have yet to show great form. Meanwhile, the sprinters now have their 2 days of glory coming up.

St-Brisson-sur-Loire - La Chapelle St. Ursin : 195km
Steve Houanard is the most aggressive rider of the day, riding much of the early kms solo and taking the first polka-dot jersey as a reward.
There is little other action today as Boasson Hagen takes the sprint ahead of Goss and Cavendish - in doing so the Norwegian also moves into the yellow jersey.

Report
The early break stand no chance today as this is already the last realistic chance for the sprinters. Liquigas' Willems grabs the polka-dot jersey however.
And in the sprint we see a repeat of yesterday as, in the yellow jersey, Boasson Hagen takes his second win on the trot. From another train, Cavendish manages to complete a Columbia 1-2.

The Missile strikes back
Speaking ahead of Tirreno-Adriatico, Nick Nuyens had some revalationary news to share with the cycling world: that The Flemish Missile will hang up his sprinting boots.

against Simon "Speed-Demon" Spilak
After simply outstanding 2nd and 5th place in sprints at the Tour Down Under, the self-proclaimed Missile brought about much media hype, and was more than happy to respond to the praise by claiming to set his sights on the coveted green jersey of the Tour de France.
However, catching up with Nick before the race kicks off in Italy, the Rabosport Times found a far less confident side of Nuyens. When asked if he believed he could challange for the sprints in this race, he responded "no chance!"
Nick proceeded to tell us that he had been absolutely dumbfounded by the media response to a "mediocore" performance at the recent Tour Down Under, and was "only playing along with the stupid journalists who don't have a clue about the sport."

"The 'Missile' shit was hilarious" he continued, "but what really cracked me up were the guys on the other side, criticising my sprinting capabilities so adamantly"
"The best was this one altercation with this American journalist trying to persuade me to believe in some media 'mis-understanding' about my top-end speed"
"Of course I'm never going to win on the Champs-Elysees" he concluded.

As you can see we have sent a far stronger group out to Italy than France this year. Menchov would appear the natural leader yet he is lacking race days and thus Nuyens could be the more likely to feature - time will tell. The likes of Flecha and Weening provide the necessary support.
 Favourites
However our main problem probably lies in the strength of this field. Cancellara, Martin and Wiggins will all be looking to take full advantage of the ITT whilst the likes of Evans, Andy Schleck and Nibali also provide fierce competition.

Cecina - Capannori : 147km
A large breakaway is comfortably reeled in by the peleton, but on the final hill Ballan looked to upset the sprinter's day by attacking the main field, but the peleton was having none of it and hauled him back.
However this high pace led to a large late crash which held up several GC favourites: Cadel Evans, and the Italian ambitions for Michele Scarponi, Vincenzo Nibali (pictured), Ivan Basso and Damiano Cunego all lost almost 2'30 on the peleton and Igor Anton lost a full 4 minutes.
At the front of the field however, Bennatti made up for a little of the Italian loss with the stage win for Liquigas holding off Griepel in the spint.
Thankfully for us no Rabobank riders were involved in the crash. However Ivan Gutierrez and Ian Stannard were less lucky and abandonned the race through injury.

With the road starting to head upwards today, we will be looking towards keeping Stetina and Moerenhout safe and, if they are feeling good, attempt to counter any late moves. Though Stef Clement sits 3rd in the GC, he has little hope of holding that over the next days so we have agreed that he will work for Stetina and Moerenhout, our co-leaders.

It is a surprise to see as strong a rider as Rigoberto Uran spearheading the break today, but it is not to be a lucky day for the escapees today.
Simon Gerrans jumps the gun early today and attacks on the flat. Biel Kadri follows but they look unlikely to hold out.
On the first main climb, perhaps surprisngly, it is Contador who sets out on the offensive.
Voeckler makes a trademark daredevil descent in an effort to chase Contador but is soon clawed back.
On the final climb we decide to send Moerenhout and Stetina to counter moves from the likes of Cobo and Leipheimer. Clement also follows his leaders to conserve his GC placing... Soon we make our way up to Contador but so too do the peleton. The bunch is back together and our lads are spent from their efforts...
Jakob Fuglsang was one rider not spent however - he attacked with Gilbert, Gadret, Van Den Broeck and Voeckler (again!) in his wheel and held them off in the sprint finish to the line, taking the yellow jersey in the process.
Further back Moerenhout has made a last-ditch attack atop the climb and comes in with Lulu Sanchez in 13th place.. but the race referees deem him to not have made any sufficient gap back to the pack.
Comment
A dissapointing day in the saddle for us. Moerenhout remains outside the top 40 in the GC (+1'19) and Stetina is outwith the top 100 riders so far. The only upside was Clement retaining his top 10 in the GC but we can hold little hope for the mountains tommorow.

I'll maybe pop a little Rabo equipment into the db if I can get my hands on some, but I hope it won't look out of place with just our team in custom equipment..?
No guarentee on timescale of next race reports but hopefully either something tommorow (oh it's already today now ) or day after as we continue in P-N and T-A.
By the way if you are concerned about the whereabouts of Robert Gesink, I can confirm he is still alive and well - we are just 'experimenting' on his training schedule.
In other news Sammy Sanchez broke his hip, and it is unclear whether this will disrupt his Tour preperation or even force him to shift his focusses on the Vuelta this year instead.

Volterra - Marina di Carrara - 174km

A stage which could see a puncheur or even the break look to spoil the sprinter's show. Personally we would prefer to play things conservatively this early in the race and, as negative as it sounds, we would hope for a sprint finish.

Liquigas send Basso to the front on the first hill much to the peleton's dismay. Clearly they are serious about holding on to Bennati's yellow jersey.
LPR soon move forward to help out - Petacchi must be feeling good for the sprint? Either way the break stand no chance against the chase.
On the final hill Ballan again makes a move with several others, but we are hoping that he is just looking to conserve his mountain's jersey.
To be safe, we send Flecha forward to help round the attackers up, but they have been swept up before he reaches the front!
Eisel looks to have perfectly positioned Griepel to take a stage win. Petacchi is looking to repay LPR's work but he has Benatti right on his wheel.
Griepel dramatically fades as the sprint kicks off however. Pozzato sticks one right down the middle from nowhere which only Cancellara and Paolini can respond to.
Cancellara comes surging past for a surprise win - clearly the fast pace proved too much for the pure sprinters today.

A hilly stage which could throw up some surprises. In theory it could boil down to a sprint but, after yesterday's dissapointment, we will be keen to follow any moves today.
Race Report
Pedro Horrillo attempts to make his way into the break, showing off our shiny new equipment in the process.
Horillo isn't succesful in escaping from the peleton, but one man who is is Jerome Pineau. The Quick Step rider casts a lonely figure against the French hillside for much of the day but secures the polka-dot jersey for his efforts.
After the main climbing is done with, Jakob Fuglsang makes an audacious move on the flatter terrain. Stetina isn't feeling good so we decide to follow with Moerenhout and Clement - why not?
Fuglsang can't follow his move through, but our duo are joined at the front by John Gadret and Phillipe Gilbert - with just under 20km to ride we have caught Pineau and, with considerable daylight back to any other chasers, we look like we might be onto a winning attack!
As we approach the run-in Thomas Voeckler hops out of his team car and latches onto the back of the group. Well at least that's the only feasible explanation for his appearance because he literally came out of nowhere. Thankfully the other chasers are still around a minute back.
A 5-man dash for the line opens up as Clement drags Moerenhout forward, but we suspect Gilbert will be too strong to fend off...
Well would you look at that - Gilbert completely faded and left Moerenhout ahead to take the win - and Clement even held off Voeckler for a (dubious) 1-2!!

Well I'm so chuffed to get off to first ProTour victory of the season. And like London buses, we had to wait a while to taste success, but when it came it was a double whammy!
With a Mountain-top finish tommorow we stand no chance of matching today's feats but between Clement and Moerenhout we still might hold out hope for a top 10 placing.

thanks it really caught me off guard to be honest but I guess we just timed our efforts perfectly
We'll do our best to hold a top 10 placing overall now but no gaurentees!
Next Tirreno-Adriatico stage up next.

A fairly flat, uninterrupted stage which was always going to produce a sprint finish.

In front of the carnage, Tosatto is moving forward to give Boonen the perfect leadout...
Boonen initially responds well but finds himself with Griepel all over him as he approaches the finish...
The Gorilla nicks it on the line and takes the leader's jersey from Benatti.

St-Paul Trois Chateaux - La Montagne de Lure - 182km

Atop La Montagne de Lure is almost certainly where Paris-Nice will be decided. For us the key is in protecting Moerenhout's (7th) and, if he feels good, Clement's (5th) GC positions. We are unlikely to be able to follow any moves from the stronger climbers so will probably have to hedge our bets in playing conservatively and limiting time losses.

BBOX set much of the day's pace - they must be confident of Voeckler taking yellow from Gilbert today.
Edvald Boasson Hagen makes a surprise attack atop the Coutes des Mourrers. What is he thinking?
Needless to say he is soon pulled back. At the foot of the final climb the first attack comes from L.L. Sanchez which Fuglsang and Contador counter
Cobo later joins in on the action and makes his way up to join compatriot Contador as they head to the finish.
Around 2'30 down the road Stetina is doing a good job of pacing Moerenhout in the 'Groupe Maillot Jaune'
Cobo outsprints Contador atop La Montagne de Lure - but how much time have our boys lost?
Voeckler comes in next at +28', which should prove enough for him to take yellow. Pelizotti follows him in.
Moerenhout comes accross the line in 12th place - he did very well to stay in this group which crossed the line only +1'08 down! Stetina rolls in soon after in 17th place at +1'40.

We couldn't have asked for more from Koos and Peter and they can be well pleased with their performance today against some of the more accustomed climbers.
We are very pleased to inform Koos at the finish that he has only slipped down one place in the GC into 8th. Our top 10 goal is looking within reach now, but there are two more of those horribly unpredictable hilly stages before we can be sure.

Calling all readers...! I am wondering what you think of the most recent report style.. for these big stages would more or less pictures and details be preffered?
Unfortunately these stages are always a hassle with so many (often futile) attacks and groups forming so im wondering how to best optimise the report whilst I'm keeping track of my own rider's of course.
And also any comments the layout in general, although im fairly happy with how that is progressing. Or any other suggestions at all
