Stage 3 will be the first test for those with overall ambitions.
Sanchez
Pellizotti
Castano
are favourites for the stage, but what can the yellow jersey do?
Costa
proved his ambitions yesterday, where he surprised everyone, and gained 19 seconds to the others. On another note, the weather is just as bad as yesterday, hopefully it will stop during the stage.
The riders are ready to roll, and they all look nervous for what’s to come later today, as the finishing climb looks like a real challenge.
And luckily, the weather quickly changes, 25 kilometers into the stage the roads are dry, and it looks like the sun can shine at any time. 5 riders have been able to attack away from the peloton. They’re
Scheit
Maesen
Seledkov
King
Haedo
They’re immediately allowed a good gap, and with 125 kilometers to go, they’re almost 5 minutes ahead of the peloton.
The rain is back with 94 kilometers to go. Back in the peloton it’s
WWE
Cerne
who are in command, and they’re chasing 7’40 behind the attackers.
The only mountain sprint today comes with 67 kilometers left, and it’s
Seledkov
who outsprints
Haedo
for the maximum 6 points. The peloton seems to control them well though, as the gap is below 6 minutes now.
Shortly after the climb,
Delage
decides to attack away from the peloton, and he quickly builds a gap of 45 seconds, chasing 4’40 behind the front 5 with 61 kilometers to go.
The intermediate sprint with 42 kilometers left of today’s stage isn’t contested, and it’s
Seledkov
who rolls over first.
Delage
is doing good behind them, he’s now 2’30 behind the breakaway, and 1’30 in front of the peloton.
25 kilometers away from the line,
De Weert
takes advantage of a neutral service car, and launches his attack behind it. But the peloton looks like they control the stage very well. The gap to the front 5 is 2’25, with
Delage
being 1 minute behind the breakaway, and De Weert being another minute behind Delage, only 25 seconds ahead of the peloton.
WWE
catches
De Weert
with 20 kilometers to go.
Delage
is still 55 seconds ahead of them, and the breakaway still holds an advantage of 2 minutes.
Sanchez
Pellizotti
can’t wait anymore, and they attack with 19 kilometers left of the stage.
But they’re quickly caught, and
Delage
decides to take off once more! 11 kilometers to go, and the peloton and Delage are 1’15 behind the breakaway.
4 kilometers to go, and the breakaway is holding on, but they’ll most likely get caught now, as we start the steep climb to the finish line.
Delage
still holds a lead of 10 seconds when he starts to climb, but the peloton seems to control the stage very, very well.
Sanchez
attacks with only 3 kilometers to go, and no one follows! He blasts past Delage, looking to catch the breakaway, and leave all others behind. Are the other favourites sleeping?
There’s surprisingly not much reaction in the peloton, but
Pellizotti
finally wakes up and finds out he needs to catch
Sanchez
And so he does, with 1600 meters to the finishing line. They’re holding a solid gap back to the peloton.
Sanchez
has clearly saved most for the sprint, and he immediately leaves
Pellizotti
behind. This looks like a popular win for the Portuguese team!
And indeed it is!
Sanchez
takes the 3rd stage of Volta a Portugal 2012.
Pellizotti
must admit Sanchez was stronger than him today, but 2nd place is still good, especially when you consider he has a decent gap back to the others.
Richardson
pulls clear for the final spot on the podium, and goes third on the stage, just ahead of
De Greef
Pineau
Then comes the bunch, led by
Sørensen
Krasnoperov
Costa
Busche & Castano
They’ve lost valuable time today, which will be hard to get back. More good news for Cyclevox though. In addition to Richardson's third place on the stage,
Beyer
rides with his heart way outside his jersey, and he keeps the yellow jersey with no more than a single second! Great fighting!
Looking closer at the result list, it’s clear the timekeepers have decided to create splits in the peloton that you really can argue actually where there or not. But the decision is made, and especially
Larsson
looses a lot on that, as he was blocked at the back of the group in the sprint, and lost almost 3 minutes to Sanchez, he can surely forget about overall glory now. The same can be said about
Eastman
who lost 2’23 to Sanchez due to blocking. On the other hand, this should bode well for the coming stages, as they’ve got to attack if they’re going to have any chance at taking back the lost time to Sanchez.
