Today's stage is a short (117km) hilly criterium. At the end of today's stage, the winner may be decided. Can Ghisalberti take the leadership from Lloret? The fight for the last podium place is not over yet as Calzati and Valjavec surely want to take Basso from that position.
No sooner the stage starts than the attacks start. Green jersey owner, Priamo, wants to be in the early break. Myagmarsuren, Belmokhtar, Wacker, Raisin and Pömer follow him.
Jamieson answered the attack a bit later, but he will manage to caught the rest of the attackers.
The pack is leaded by BMC, Olympus, Nespresso and Benfica. These teams surely don't want that the break gets a large advantage.
The front riders are trying to build the biggest advantage they can. But with 70km to go, its 4'42''.
Meanwhile, attack in the pack! Golcer, Gallego and Donald try to escape.
At 55km to go, Vespa, Sony Ericsson and BMC start to raise the speed in the peloton.
Ndbri ignores the fact the peloton is at a very fast pace and tries to escape.
15km after, here's the situation:
E1 (Jamieson, Pömer, Myagmarsuren, Wacker, Belmokhtar, Raisin and Priamo).
+2'25'' - E2 (Gallego, Golcer and Donald, who is, of course, sitting on the back).
+1'11 - Peloton, which just caughts Ndbri.
At 22km to go, Moreno, 6th overall, attacks!
But, both Moreno and the chasing group get caught a few kilometers after.
The early breakaway riders have a short lead of 1'30'' with 17 km to go.
The end of the stage is closing, and Moreno and Stalder attack!
Right up next, Calzati, Orozco, Lewis, Ribeiro and Valjavec do the same.
Basso, feeling he can lost his 3rd place, also attacks! Gutiérrez Palacios and Weissinger follow him.
The breakaway riders were swallowed by the peloton as soon as the attacks started. At 3km to go:
E1 (Calzati and Moreno).
+20'' - E2 (Valjavec, Stalder and Ribeiro).
+23'' - E3 (Basso, who has a small advantage over the pack).
Lewis, Weissinger and Gutiérrez Palacios attack again.
Under the 1km banner, Valjavec, Stalder and Ribeiro join together with Calzati and Moreno. The sprint begins and Moreno takes the lead.
But Valjavec and Calzati are closing in!
The three late attackers manage to catch Basso and the Italian leads the group.
The peloton is not far away and Ghisalberti is leading it! Can he gain some time?
Meanwhile, Calzati takes the lead close to the line...
And he wins in front of Moreno and Valjavec! Ribeiro and Stalder close the group.
Basso tries to keep his 3rd place overall, but Calzati steals if from the Vespa rider.
Ghisalberti leads the pack but Lloret is right behind him which means Lloret keeps the jersey.
Calzati is now 3rd in the GC and Moreno takes the points jersey of Priamo. Can he hold it in the next stage?
