6 riders break away early. They are Sprick, Rabottini, Stybar, Campero, Ortega and Boonratanathanakorn. Some of them are decent climbers but they're all a fair way back in GC.
They start the first of 3 big climbs with their lead on the peloton around 7 minutes. No problem for Lotto who are setting an easy pace.
Stybar and Boonratanathanakorn are 3rd and 4th in the KoM standings so the fight for the KoM points is very intresting. Stybar edges out Ortega atop the first category climb which gives him the provisional lead.

Excitement at the front of the peloton as Velits and Samwel try to escape.
They get joined by Navarro, Schwab, Jaramillo and Gadret to form a chasing group. They are exactly 10 minutes behind the leaders and 3 minutes in front the peloton with 60 km remaining.
Thats a big lead for the leaders but there's still a lot of climbing left.
Even at the foot of the HC climb the peloton is still taking it easy with Lotto sprinters Stauff and Croket still doing most of the work.
The chasers are now more than 4 minutes ahead of the peloton which means Samwel is now the provisional leader.
Halfway up the climb the chasers are now over 5 minutes ahead, Cobo and Duenas come to the front of the peloton to set a higher pace which causes a big part of the riders to drop off. Only 68 riders remain in the peloton.
Stybar also takes the HC climb which means he now has a comfortable lead in the KoM standings.

Their lead over the chasers, where Schwab has been dropped, has then decreased to 5 minutes.
And more action as 4 of the top climbers attacked out of the peloton. Sella, Van den broeck, Amador and Fothen have created a 50 seconds gap as they cross the top 10 minutes behind the leaders.
The escapees have reached the foot of the final climb, which has some gruel gradients early on, so it's time for an overview. The leaders (Boonratanathanakorn, Ortega, Stybar, Rabottini, Sprick and Campero) are still leading.
Just over 4 minutes behind them are 5 chasers. Schwab follows a minute and half further behind.
Another minute and half behind Schwab are Van den broeck, Sella, Amador and Fother who have 40 seconds on the peloton. They are now just under 8 minutes behind the peloton.
Sprick is confident and attacks his companions with 7.5 km to go. Campero tries to react but can't immediately latch on. Sprick looks very strong and slowly starts to increase his lead.
Intxausti, Martin, Pedraza and Machado attack the peloton and have almost closed the gap to the group with the four other big favourites.
And so a favourites group of 11 is formed ( Schwab, Van den broeck, Machado, Panyatov, Sella, Keinath, Martin, Fothen, Amador, Intxausti and Pedraza). Race leader De La Fuente has been dropped together with white jersey Scarponi.
Sprick is still leading the race, followed by Campero at 25 seconds and the duo of Ortega and Rabottini at 40 seconds.
The danger might come from behind though as the Velits group (still together) is only 2 minutes and half behind.
Sella attacked again this time with Machado, Fothen and Van den broeck in his wheel. He closed the gap to the group with Velits but the next group, led by Amador isn't far behind.
Sprick in the meanwhile has reached the red kite. It's looking very good for him as Campero is not coming any closer.
1 minute 15 behind Sprick is a big group of 14 riders. (Ortega, Rabottini, Sella, Van den broeck, Velits, Gadret, Amador, Machado, Samwel, Jaramillo, Navarro, Martin and Fothen). They'll be sprinting to create any seperation between them to decide who will take over the leaders jersey. It seems like Van den broeck is the best bet.
Sprick can celebrate a beatifull stage win. He didn't waste too much energy early on sprinting for KoM points and was clearly the best climber on the final climb.
Campero just holds off Velits for 2nd place. Velits had a strong sprint in the end and one could wonder what would've been possible had he been a bit more aggressive a bit further down the climb.
Samwel leads home a bigger favourites group including Van den broeck and Amador who were both 1'13 behind De La Fuente before the stage. They came in 52 seconds after Sprick.
You could call Martin, Fothen and Intxausti the losers of the day because they all lose a bit of time on equal climbers after they couldn't hang on in the final kilometre.
But biggest loser of the day is De La Fuente. He comes in together with Boonratanathanakorn 3 minutes and half behind the winnner which means he loses his leaders jersey. That means Van den broeck is the new leader!
