Vuelta a Colombia - Stage 5

imageshack.us/a/img199/2438/9bkr.jpg

No break is formed yet as the peloton approaches the first of three intermediate sprints. So i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss jumps out the peloton to take 6 easy points. None other sprinter tries, they're probably saving themselves for the final sprint.

imageshack.us/a/img19/9131/uv88.jpg

Three riders break clear after the sprint. They are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Jungels, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Rabottini and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pauwels. Especially the latter will be motivated after his teammate Redondo took a win from the break yesterday. That seems much less likely on today's terrain though.

imageshack.us/a/img716/5323/ska6.jpg

All of them are over 10 minutes behind so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto sees no danger in letting them go. Nor do they keep control at the front of the peloton so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png UBS, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Red Bull are forced to keep the leaders under control.

imageshack.us/a/img7/5883/eev1.jpg

No interest in the second intermediate sprint by any of the escapees. Their lead has now stabilised around 6 minutes with 75 km left to ride.

imageshack.us/a/img19/9027/1p6y.jpg

Crash! This could be an important one as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen is down! Lotto's top sprinter is definatly one of the big favourites today. Luckily he doesn't seem hurt and can easily rejoin the peloton.

imageshack.us/a/img20/6185/3ojo.jpg

40 km to go and Red Bull, Wikipedia and UBS now have taken full control over the bunch. The escapees are still 3 minutes in front but they should have no problem bringing back the leaders.

imageshack.us/a/img51/7798/mmvs.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Jungels feels the peloton approaching so goes on an attempt. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Rabottini and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Pauwels jump in his wheel but they know that it's desperate. The three get caught not much later.

imageshack.us/a/img706/3259/h02a.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen clearly didn't lose his confidence in the crash as all 8 Red Bull riders are now lining up at the front of the peloton.

imageshack.us/a/img593/1627/vzfr.jpg

Disaster strikes in the middle of the peloton as many riders go down. Biggest names there seems to be i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl, he's really having a lot of bad luck this race and the ever unlucky i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao.

imageshack.us/a/img96/8999/lqqh.jpg

Back to the front where i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Red Bull are still in full control with all the big name sprinters in Van Stayen's wheel. Order: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Richeze, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Croket, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Forero, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Haedo, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Aberasturi, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Lavoine, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Sobota, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Reynes.

imageshack.us/a/img707/3914/z3w8.jpg

It's Croket who jumps early with 1700 metres left while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Facci is still doing a great job for Van Stayen.

imageshack.us/a/img850/8723/7t9y.jpg

Croket pulled up almost next to Facci under the red kite and that's the sign for Goss, Forero, Van Stayen and Richeze to all start their move. They might have some trouble to find place for the 4 of them.

imageshack.us/a/img20/5314/fso2.jpg

Goss is going so fast he somehow ends up at the other side of the barriers! Van Stayen, Richeze and Croket are even about a halfwheel length behind.

imageshack.us/a/img196/4577/gvk1.jpg

Goss got back to the other side of the barriers but Van Stayen has now pulled up next to him. Richeze isn't far behind either while Haedo is coming fast through the middle. This is going to be close!

imageshack.us/a/img855/6205/axvt.jpg

None of them can create any sort of seperation. We're going to need the photo finish here.

imageshack.us/a/img268/9748/r2s7.jpg

It's Van Stayen on the far who times his jump best and crosses the line first!

imageshack.us/a/img24/6461/bexa.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen can celebrate a beautiful victory after coming back from a crash! i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Richeze complete the podium. Well deserved for all these three considering their teams did all the work today.

imageshack.us/a/img208/4636/pvo5.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Haedo with a fast finish and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Lavoine complete the top 5. Rather dissapointing results for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Forero in 6th and 9th respectively.

Now we'll have to wait for the unlucky riders who crashed. 108 riders come in with the peloton before some smaller groups. Biggest victims are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Pinot (+3'06)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao Montoya (+4'10)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Navarro
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Costagli
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Redondo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cobo
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl (+5'12)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Serrano and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Heider were in too much pain and had to abandon.
