The 6th stage of the USAPCC is the queen stage. There is a long mountain halfway through the stage and 2 shorter sharper hills near the end. The finish lays atop the last of those two hills, Flagstaff mountain near Boulder.
Ardila is defending the leaders jersey and is probably looking to gain some time on Keizer. The Dutch timetrialist is only 51" behind with a timetrial still to come. It's also the last chance for some of the bigger names like Pozzovivo, Kashechkin and Karpets to make something of this race.
A breakaway of three has formed early on. Hasanovic, Gaudin and Dieteren pass under the first intermediate sprint with a lead that is around 2 minutes over the peloton where WWE are setting a gentle pace.
Hasanovic leads them over the first mountain. The leaders aren't sprinting for the points cause Borges' lead is to big. It's safe to say that competition is his unless he crashes.
The peloton is inside the final km of the first climb aswell when Kashechkin decides to attack. He has been very calm so far but perhaps was saving some energy for a great solo ride today? He sits 27th in GC just over 2 minutes behind.
Kashechkin got joined by Borges and together they closed the gap to the leaders.
Their gap over the peloton is 7 minutes with 75 km to go. They are climbing the last short hill before the long descent takes them to the final two hills. If they don't lose too much time on the descent, Kashechkin's move could very well be succesfull. Worth noting that the other 4 leaders all are more than 5 minutes behind.
Kashechkin sprints away from his companions to take the second intermediate at the foot of the penultimate hill.
Behind him, the peloton has woken up and decreased the lead of the break to 4 minutes.
WWE seams to have trouble to get the gap under 3 minutes so Lukoil and Metinvest, the teams of the numbers 2 and 3 in GC, send some riders to the front to help.
Kashechkin is greedy and takes the penultimate mountain sprint in front of Borges' who will be taking home the mountains jersey. Gaudin, Dieteren and Hasanovic are dropped for a moment but quickly manage to come back on the descent.
The chasers at the front of the peloton are giving everything they have. Even Karpets is working for Izagirre now. They can decrease the gap to 3 minutes at the foot of the final hill but the leaders themselves will have to do the rest of the work.
Kashechkin immediately attacks away from his companions at the start of the hill. This way he also takes the third and last intermediate sprint.
Schreurs is the first to attack from the peloton. He establishes a small gap as there is a new attack led by race leader Ardila. He still has ground to make up to against Kashechkin. Pozzovivo, Keizer, Chavanel and Izagirre quickly jump in his wheel.
But it seems like Ardila doesn't have the legs today. Pozzovivo is the only rider capable of bridging the gap to Schreurs. Meji duo Zaini and Shimizu jump away from the Ardila-group but they can't get any closer to the duo in front of them.
Ardila has brought Kashechkin's lead back to two minutes now so it doesn't look like Kashechkin will become a danger for GC.
Kashechkin is still going strong. The GC lead probably won't be for him but he can still take a beautifull stage win.
His chasers follow in this order: First Dieteren followed by Borges. Gaudin and Hasanovic are further down.
Pozzovivo and Schreurs work well together and pass the first two escapees. You can see how a bit further down, Zaini, Chavanel and Izagirre are really putting Ardila under pressure.
Kashechkin holds on for a beautifull victory after a long rance attack. Very well deserved.
When Ardila's group approaches the red kite, his disadvantage to Kashechkin has grown over 2 minutes again. The leader is faltering and will need a very good final sprint to hold on to his jersey.
Zaini and Chavanel have managed to ride away from this group and are trying to close down on Schreurs and Pozzovivo.
It's a close sprint between Pozzovivo and Schreurs for second. They come in almost a minute behind Kashechkin who rode a very strong final km. Pozzovivo just takes it on the line. A strong move from these two on the final hill, they came to late for the win but should move up a fair bit in GC.
You can see Dieteren coming around the corner for 4th. Brave ride by him but he stood no chance against Kashechkin today.
Zaini and Chavanel are next to take the 5th and 6th place. It's a good move for Chavanel's GC hopes, Zaini is much further down in GC and was mainly targeting a good stage position. Borges honours his mountain jersey with 7th for the stage.
Hasanovic just holds on in fornt of Lloyd and Kritskiy to lead home the peloton almost 2 minutes behind the winner. Ardila is in this group but didn't look very good today.
The gap combined with all the bonifications he took means Kashechkin also takes over the leaders jersey! Chavanel is 2nd 14 seconds behind and Ardila is now 3rd at 20 seconds.
