USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 3
Spilak23
imageshack.us/a/img571/6798/tie6.jpg

The third stage of the USAPCC is a mountain stage that finishes in the famous ski resort Aspen. The Cottonwood pass and the Independence pass should make the race very intresting but there is 30 kms of mainly descent after the last summit.

Race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kritskiy is stage favourite again together with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Kashechkin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Pozzovivo. Britton i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bibby can't be underestimated either as he has a very good sprint for a climber.

imageshack.us/a/img18/3903/s5ce.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.png Daan Oliver initiates the day's first attack. Jumping in his wheel is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Stetina. Intresting move. The local rider is a very good climber and is still in the same time as most riders 28 seconds behind Kritskiy.

imageshack.us/a/img812/6202/1fwr.jpg

They get joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Borges and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Seledkov and form our break of the day.

imageshack.us/a/img706/9197/fmck.jpg

Borges, who was second in the KoM ranking before the stage, takes the first Cat. 3 mountain sprint and the lead in the standings. Stetina is seconds while the other two don't seem to care.

imageshack.us/a/img16/9339/z54h.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Rodrigues has a flat tire right before the first big pass but easily rejoins the peloton.

imageshack.us/a/img834/790/zh87.jpg

The same 2 riders fight for the second mountain sprint which is first Category. They reverse the order this time as Stetina takes full points.

imageshack.us/a/img716/7439/8gt7.jpg

The peloton, were Bablidze and Grygorenko attacked for minor points, crests the top of the Independence pass 10 minutes behind the leaders.

imageshack.us/a/img191/1898/xa6i.jpg

Hard work from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png LukOil and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Vespa has reduced the gap of the leaders to 5 minutes when the road starts to raise again towards the final climb.

imageshack.us/a/img24/6485/zs4s.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Chavanel, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Txurruka, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Morabito and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Lloyd attack from the peloton a couple of kilometres before the final climb really starts. They have almost caught up with the leaders but the peloton isn't far behind.

imageshack.us/a/img203/562/jl4o.jpg

The 4 chasers join the 4 leaders to form a leading group of 8.

Strange reaction in the peloton were the pace totally drops and the advantage of the leaders grows again to 3 minutes when they start the final 7 km of the climb which are the steepest.

imageshack.us/a/img4/5273/7ro9.jpg

Stetina also takes full points on Cottonwood pass. Borges can only manage 5th but takes the mountains jersey.

Olivier, Seledkov and Lloyd are slightly dropped near the top but can easily rejoin on the descent.

imageshack.us/a/img96/3594/2q58.jpg

The peloton is led over 2 minutes later by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Izagirre and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Montaguti. But the peloton is still 90 riders strong so the pace wasn't really hard.

It looks very good for the break to survive with only descent remaining.

imageshack.us/a/img42/1511/h2q6.jpg

That is a sign for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Morabito attack. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Txurruka and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Stetina try to follow but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Chavanel is a very strong descender and easily pulls them back.

The peloton doesn't come closer so the winner will come from the break.

imageshack.us/a/img41/5889/in05.jpg

Next to attack is local hero i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Stetina with 3 km to go.

imageshack.us/a/img138/8932/wg7c.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Lloyd starts to sprint with 2 km to go which surprises i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Seledkov who has to leave a small gap. This means only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Chavanel remains in Lloyd's wheel.

imageshack.us/a/img18/4217/vav5.jpg

1 km to go and Stetina still has a small gap on the others. But how many energy has he still left? One thing is sure, the fans are cheering on their local star.

imageshack.us/a/img14/7498/7t7w.jpg

300 metres left and Lloyd has almost caught up with Stetina who now also has started to sprint. Chavanel can only try to hold on to Lloyd's wheel who has an impressive sprint here.

imageshack.us/a/img716/6606/1is3.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Chavanel has played it very smart and jumped over Lloyd and Stetina to take the stage win. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Lloyd still passes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Stetina for 2nd, the latter clearly very dissapointed after coming so close to a stage win. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Txurruka came very fast from behind for 4th.

imageshack.us/a/img593/1990/6n7i.jpg

Vitor Rodrigues leads home the big peloton 1'10 later.

That means i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Chavanel is the new race leader, very important for the American Amex squad!
