The third stage of the USAPCC is a mountain stage that finishes in the famous ski resort Aspen. The Cottonwood pass and the Independence pass should make the race very intresting but there is 30 kms of mainly descent after the last summit.
Race leader Kritskiy is stage favourite again together with Kashechkin and Pozzovivo. Britton Bibby can't be underestimated either as he has a very good sprint for a climber.
Daan Oliver initiates the day's first attack. Jumping in his wheel is Stetina. Intresting move. The local rider is a very good climber and is still in the same time as most riders 28 seconds behind Kritskiy.
They get joined by Borges and Seledkov and form our break of the day.
Borges, who was second in the KoM ranking before the stage, takes the first Cat. 3 mountain sprint and the lead in the standings. Stetina is seconds while the other two don't seem to care.
Rodrigues has a flat tire right before the first big pass but easily rejoins the peloton.
The same 2 riders fight for the second mountain sprint which is first Category. They reverse the order this time as Stetina takes full points.
The peloton, were Bablidze and Grygorenko attacked for minor points, crests the top of the Independence pass 10 minutes behind the leaders.
Hard work from LukOil and Vespa has reduced the gap of the leaders to 5 minutes when the road starts to raise again towards the final climb.
Chavanel, Txurruka, Morabito and Lloyd attack from the peloton a couple of kilometres before the final climb really starts. They have almost caught up with the leaders but the peloton isn't far behind.
The 4 chasers join the 4 leaders to form a leading group of 8.
Strange reaction in the peloton were the pace totally drops and the advantage of the leaders grows again to 3 minutes when they start the final 7 km of the climb which are the steepest.
Stetina also takes full points on Cottonwood pass. Borges can only manage 5th but takes the mountains jersey.
Olivier, Seledkov and Lloyd are slightly dropped near the top but can easily rejoin on the descent.
The peloton is led over 2 minutes later by Izagirre and Montaguti. But the peloton is still 90 riders strong so the pace wasn't really hard.
It looks very good for the break to survive with only descent remaining.
That is a sign for Morabito attack. Txurruka and Stetina try to follow but Chavanel is a very strong descender and easily pulls them back.
The peloton doesn't come closer so the winner will come from the break.
Next to attack is local hero Stetina with 3 km to go.
Lloyd starts to sprint with 2 km to go which surprises Seledkov who has to leave a small gap. This means only Chavanel remains in Lloyd's wheel.
1 km to go and Stetina still has a small gap on the others. But how many energy has he still left? One thing is sure, the fans are cheering on their local star.
300 metres left and Lloyd has almost caught up with Stetina who now also has started to sprint. Chavanel can only try to hold on to Lloyd's wheel who has an impressive sprint here.
But Chavanel has played it very smart and jumped over Lloyd and Stetina to take the stage win. Lloyd still passes Stetina for 2nd, the latter clearly very dissapointed after coming so close to a stage win. Txurruka came very fast from behind for 4th.
Vitor Rodrigues leads home the big peloton 1'10 later.
That means Chavanel is the new race leader, very important for the American Amex squad!
