Due to the great amount of equipment in PCM.daily's 2009 DB, there's a larger CPU load. To reduce this, you can use this Performance Update. It basically makes the used textures smaller, causing less load. Not just for the equipment, but also other parts of the game, e.g. the buildings and field textures.
It's worth mentioning that these textures still look good - in fact, for most parts, it's pretty much impossible to see the differences.
Releae Notes:
The following files should help speed up PCM when used with the PCMDaily.db. The Daily.db includes a number of graphical additions which can sometimes slow down the frame rate in 3D - especially if your computer is a few years old.
These files are smaller versions of some of the graphics files included and the good news is that they don't really affect the quality of graphics in game - though do speed things up considerably.
I won't go into details about the results of my tests, but in its 'native' state riding out of a town on one stage of the TDF, my computer's frame rate averaged between 40 and 50. With all of these files installed, the frame rate jumped to between 75 and 85. I didn't really notice a drop off in graphical quality either.
There are 4 options when installing.
1. Run the installer and install them all. If you're worried, back up the following folders before installation : Equipment in CM_Textures, textures in CM_Stages and IsolatedBuildings in Blocs.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Alternatively, do 1/2 or all of the following depending on your preference.
2. Install the equipment only files. Run the installer to a dummy directory on your desktop. Drag the CM_Textures folder ONLY into your main PCM folder. Back up Equipment as above if worried. File size of all texture files from the original DB - 415MB. New File size - 162MB.
3. Install the building texture files. Most of the textures for buildings are very big. The file sizes have been changed. You have to look hard to notice these changes in game - or rather I had to. Run the installer to a dummy directory on your desktop. Drag the Blocs folder into your main PCM folder. Total difference in file sizes is about 50MB.
4. Install the field texture files. Same as above really. Run the installer to a dummy directory on your desktop. Drag the CM_Stages folder into your main PCM folder. File sizes about a quarter of the original.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
And even if you have a state of the art gaming rig, these files might improve your PCM experience.
Finally, the acknowledgement. These files were sent to me by a user of the PCMDaily.db. He has asked not to be named - but on behalf of the DB team and everyone who uses these files I'd like to say - THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
