The break went clear but split up on the climb. Sokolov and Mehr-Wenige crosses first, just ahead of Sestili. With Trusov, Sys, De Gendt and Wyss also ahead of the peleton, but all riding solo

Sestili links up with the front 2 but they never really stand much chance. Theyre close to being caught by the intermediate sprint which Di Luca, Bennati, Ponzi, Salerno and a few others took interest in

Di Luca and Bennati were temporarily with the break before dropping back

The break are caught by the 2nd categorised climb and for most of it we only see the dropping of weaker riders before Rujano attacks with 1km to the top

He cant take the full pts though, only 3rd, as Cataldo edges out Sella

His lead peaks at 50 seconds but he is not so suited to the flat roads and is caught with 9km to go

Theres a small hill now between them and the finish and on it Vastaranta hits the front with Ballan, Bellis and Pozzovivvo following

They start to pull out a gap as Morabito tries to catch them

But the stage looks set to be between the front 4 as they hit the descent

Vastaranta leads out with teammate Ballan surely the favourite now

Ballan should go now but doesnt seem to be as Pozzovivvo and Bellis come through

Ballan has completely messed this up and so now it is Bellis v Pozzovivvo

Its very close but the stage goes to Jonathan Bellis!

A 3rd 2nd place in this race for Pozzovivvo but he does gain a bit of time on his rivals, while Vastaranta takes 3rd, still ahead of Ballan

5th goes to Ricco, 23 seconds behind - meaning Pozzovivvo will gain 35 with time bonuses. Bakelandts 6th ahead of Morabito, Di Luca, Contador and Barredo

Farkad Mohammad was so far behind that he was forced to abandon the race with 2.5km still to go. He was due to finish at over 50 minutes and infact the time limit was implemented at around 26 minutes. This is bad news for 24 other riders - they thought they had finished but no, they are now out of the race.
