Giro d'Italia - Stage 7

A 2nd consecutive hilly stage, with the road going up most of the time until a daredevil descent at the end.

Clearly today a lot of riders wanted to get themselves into a breakaway with a whole load of attacks.

First we had Cummings, Thomas, Pavarin, Berthou, and Fertonani attacking - chased by Hutchings, Klimov, Healion, Kroon, Sonnery and Manan.
Healion and Kroon made it up to the front group replacing Fertonani, the others being caught before a fresh attack from Mehr-Wenige, Mangel, Vastaranta, Kruijswijk, Klimov, Manan, Sokolov and Fertonani.

Of those 14, 4 were dropped (Cummings, Thomas, Kroon and Berthou) and 10 men started to pull away - only for Kroon, Ponzi, Coenen, Bellis, Da Dalto, Hutchings, Cummings and Thomas to attack from the peleton oncemore.

All of those 8 attackers were caught, as was Manan, to make it 9 men in the lead. And now some more attacks. Coenen, Hutchings, Da Dalto, Caruso, Thomas, Ponzi, Kroon and Cummings.

Not all made it clear, but some did and the result was a 14 man breakaway that was allowed to go clear.

Sokolov (American Suzuki), Kruijswijk (B&O), Mangel (Credit Lyonnais), Da Dalto, Klimov (Domina Vacanze), Healion (Eurosport), Kroon (Rabobank), Vastaranta (SIC Radical), Mehr-Wenige (Virgin Media), Coenen, Fertonani (Warner Brothers), Ponzi, Caruso (Wiggle), Pavarin (Wikipedia)

The intermediate sprints go uncontested now weve had mountains, and Caruso is relaying at front at the right time to take it.

The lead peaks at just over 7 minutes, but is down to around a minute and a half as the climbing ends as the descent begins. Kruijswijk takes the 3 pts for the climb ahead of Kroon and Vastaranta

With around 36km left, a lead of 90 seconds will be hard to keep so the break will need to take risks

The peleton is still quite big, we can see La Gazetta on the front with Di Luca, Posthuma and Rogers - they could be chasing for either Cunego or Bennati or both.

Only 6 of the riders in the breakaway are actually relaying: Vastaranta, Mangel, Caruso, Kruijswijk, Ponzi and Coenen

But somehow it is working! Heading into the final 10km, their lead is barely changed at 1 minute 20!

Crash in the pack! 10 riders down including 13th overall and Stage 6 winner Iglinski, and Accumalux' other main helper to Pellizotti Perez Fernandez.

Crash in the break! Da Dalto goes down and he takes teammate Klimov with him, as well as Mehr-Wenige. Its bad news for Klimov though, whose injuries force him to abandon the race.

14 becomes 11 but its clear that the breakaway is going to make it now. Mangel leads off the sprint

Caruso is the first to move out from the Frenchman, with Vastaranta, Ponzi and Kruijswijk all close

Vastaranta is the strongest sprinter but finds himself stuck behind Caruso and Mangel with no room to maneouvre

Simone Ponzi wins the stage! Its a 1-2 for Wildcard team Wiggle with Caruso in 2nd!

Mangel takes 3rd with Kruijswijk edging out Vastaranta for 4th, Coenen 6th and then the 5 men who neither relayed nor could make an impact in the sprint

The pack finish at 1'10 with Barredo beating Cunego, Di Luca and Bozic

Crash caused Iglinski to lose 3 minutes although GC was not his first priority, time will tell if he is now injured or not
