A 20km, flat, team trial kicks off the race. Who will take the first maglia rosa? Well the 3-Star favourites are Festina, Team B&O and Accumalux are 2-star favourites with Virgin Media and La Gazetta rated as 1-star.

Eurosport sare the first to start, and more specifically it is Italian TT champion Marco Pinotti

The time they set is 25'50. But their lead is brief as Credit Lyonnais go 15 seconds faster

Rabobank are the current ProTour leaders but are not helped by a disorganized finish to the stage. They go 2nd, +12

Virgin Media are one of the pre-stage favourites, but no maglio rosa for them - 2nd @2 seconds.

Warner Brothers go 6th, 36 seconds down

But next are Sella's team Lipton Ice Tea. Logan Hutchings leads them over the line as they take the lead! 3 seconds faster than Credit Lyonnais

But here come the team who are really targeting the Giro. They're already wearing maglia rosas (except Rogers)

Theres a bit of a fight to cross the line first, with Posthumas just edging out Di Luca, and for good reason - they smash the time of Lipton and take the lead by 36, thats right 36, seconds!

Its a tough act to follow but Festina do manage 2nd, 20 seconds back. But team leader Alberto Contador is not amongst their top 5 so had needlessly lost a few more seconds

Accumalux are close to beating Festina but a scruffy finish may have cost them as they go 3rd, at 22 seconds

Wikipedia are already at a disadvantage in that they start with only 7 riders, but they still manage to beat Domina Vacanze - +1'24 to La Gazetta

Next are British Airways. Its a bit of a long next though as they are sloooow. 2 minutes behind La Gazetta, they are last (excluding the control team, but the control team werent even trying)

And finally Team B&O. Can they beat La Gazetta. Kreuziger leads them earlier on but has surprisingly dropped off by the end as B&O go 2nd! Still 19 seconds down though
