Nothing happened until 35km to go when Freire and Vansummeren attacked away
The countermove came from Blythe, Vanspeybrouck, Steurs, Mertens and Wellens
But those 5 were surprisingly chased down and caught
Leaving Vansummeren and Freire wit ha 2 minute lead and 21km to go
More attacks from the pack
Vanspeybrouck, Mertens, Visconti, Steurs, Eisel, De Vocht, Wellens
And now Blythe
The lead of Freire and Vansummeren is cut to just over a minute
Vanspeybrouck and Steurs have a gap
But the riders behind attack again to close them down
The chasers continue to attack each other
Freire and Vansummeren will start to feel under pressure
And they are caught by Steurs and Eisel
Vanspeybrouck, Blythe and Mertens are not too far back
Steurs hits the front on the final cobbles section and tows Freire away from the other 2!
He now faces the task of trying to outsprint Oscar Freire
Blythe, Mertens and Vanspeybrouck have caught Eisel and Vansummeren in the battle for 3rd
Freire makes his move on Steurs
And Oscar Freire is the unlikely winner of the East Midlands classic!
Eisel is 3rd. just ahead of Blythe, Vanspeybrouck, Vansummeren and Mertens
Visconti, Wellens and De Vocht round out the Top 10
Portal is 11th and then Giaux outsprints Bewley, Backstedt and Fenn for 12th
Acqua & Sapone make a scoring debut to their season (with new manager ltt) with 16th and 17th for Flickinger and Farrar, ahead of Luke Rowe
