Vuelta a Castilla y Leon - Stage 5
mrlol
i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas500.png

It’s the last 162km of the race, containing two hills. The summit of the last one is still 50km away from the finish though, so a groupe sprint would seem likely. That would favour Valverde, but with only 26 bonification seconds available today and him being 29 seconds behind, that’s not going to do it. Will Colorado be able to follow him?

With the first sprint uncontested by the break, we can have a good look to see who’s there: Becerra, de Greef, Nogaledo, Brolin, Johnson, Craven, Jeannesson, Khalilikhosroshani, Rincon and Tschop. Benfica leads the pack for race leader Colorado.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas501.png

The first KOM isnt contested either, although today’s got more points on offer then all of the previous stages combined… Nogaledo takes this one before Tschopp and Johnson.
They’ve got 6 minutes to the pack with 90km left.
But… where did Dan Craven go?

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas502.png

He’s behind on the lead groupe! But why? ‘Radio Tour’ doesn’t know either. Maybe a crash or a puncture? We’ll never know.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas503.png

As we reach the top of the last climb of thi tour, it’s two Ultimate riders crossing first; Jeanneson and Rincon, follwed by Becerra. But… this is enough for Jeannesson to take home the KOM jersey, without even contesting it!

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas504.png

In the decent, #8 in GC Veloso crashes. But noone waits, so his GC is ruined.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas505.png

And as we reach the flat the attacks come in the pack. Duque starts it all, followed by Lowe, Landaluze and a lot more including Valverde and Jaramillo (GC #2 and #3), but no Colorado!

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas506.png

This is the race situation with 25km left to go. Colorado is in the pack, which is lead by his team: Benfica.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas508.pngi224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas507.png

As most riders from E4 attack and cross to E3, Valverde and Marquez dont, and are caugth by the pack. Meanwhile E3 closes in on Thuaux, who had the strongest attack.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas509.png

But don’t forget, the break is still not caugth! It’s Brolin who decided to attack, and he’s alone with 11km to go, followed by Rincon and Johnson.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas510.png

And since the favourites groupe keep attacking eachother rathert hen cooperating, Brolins lead has grown to 2’55! As they did catch and drop Thuaux, they’re now 1 minute in front of the pack lead by Santander and Benfica. Will Jaramillo pass Valverde and Colorado to take the overall win because of an attack on the flat???

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas511.png

Benfica and Santander can’t get closer as the pack is now 1’10 behind het Jaramillo groupe. Thuaux is almost caugth by the pack, and up front, Brolin has a 30 second lead over his two chasers who are only 20 seconds in front of the rest of the groupe. Only 5km left, so it’s looking good for Brolin!

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas512.png

In the favourites groupe, Alarcon tries to help out teammate Taaramae, but sprinting for 10th is all there’s left for him… Best sprinter here is Duque, but he’s in the back of the groupe, together with Jaramillo who keeps calculating the amounth of seconds left… He need 1’16 to Colorado and has 1’05 right now: This could be it!

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas513.png

As Rincon and Johnson are caugth by the groupe, they start the sprint for second: Brolin is out of reach!

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas514.png

And so Brolin takes the final stage for Ikea!

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas515.png

Rincon manages second after a long Chase with Tschop third.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas516.png

The sprint for the favourites groupe is on, with Taaramae in the lead after hearing his teammate won, Duque follows.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas517.png

But Taaramae has much more power left and takes 10th in front of Duque. They arrive 1’39 after Brolin; Let’s start counting the seconds for Jaramillo and Colorado…

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Castilla%20e%20Leon/cas518.png

Moreno lead home the pack: 2’31 on Brolin... Not enough for Jaramillo! Although he overtake Valverde for 2nd, Colorado win the Vuelta a Castilla e Leon with 24 seconds left. Congratulations!
