KBC Driedaagse De Panne - Koksijde - Stage 3

It’s the final stage before the time trial, as well as the longest stage. Luckley for the riders, today there is no rain, no wind, and less cold. A sprint seems likey since most GC riders will be saving energy for tomorrow. That means Mohs, van Heerden and van Avermeat are the favourites.

As it seems most riders fear the length of the stage, there are no attacks until the first sprint. Van Avermeat takes it, having had a solid leadout by Stroetinga. Casper and Ascani take the remaining points. It seems a bit pointless though, since Ponzi has a big lead in the points classification…

As we reach the only KOM sprint of the day, Ponzi attacks to take it with easy. Mainly because the others are held back by three motorcycles who wheren’t paying attention, but does Simone care? Thats right, he doesnt. This is even more pointless then sprints though, since Leukemans can’t lose the KOM jersey anymore. Oh well, at least Ponzi secured second place here.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan302.png

And after 62km we’ve finally got the first attack. It’s Petrie-Armstrong again! But, this time, noone follows. That means he’ll have to cover the remaining 160km all alone. Not only is that a hard job, it’s also pretty chanceless.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan303.png

He keeps going though, scoring a lot of publicity on tv for his sponsors.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan304.png

Behind him, it’s now Caspers turn to take revenge on van Avermeat in the second sprint.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan305.png

And the third sprint, won by Petrie-Armstrong of course, is no different as van Avermeat now has a very bad leadout, while Casper had a good one: Casper second, teammate Dall’Antonia third.
Petrie-Armstrong meanwhile, doesn’t has any chance of the stagewin. He’s kept within reach.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan306.png

And with 25km left, it’s over for him as he’s caugth, passed and dropped. What a day for him; now he’ll have to cover the remaining kilometers alone as well…

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan307.png

But still, the races goes on. With 7km left, the preparation for the sprint it on! On the left are Tennant and Kennaugh followed by Eisel and Bongiorno, as are Ascani and Gatto. On the other side we have Dall’Antonia, Casper, Mohs and van Avermeat.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan308.png

3km: Eisel decided to go his own way, as Dall’Antonia’s leadout turns out the weakest one. Tennant and Kennaugh looking good.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan309.png

One kilometer later though, Tennant fades as well, as Ista leads the sprint, followed bu Kennaugh and Bongiorna and van Heerden coming up as well.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan310.png

And into the final km Kennaugh and van Heerden are off, as for Bongiorno, Weissinger, Ista, Paolini and Eisel the only thing that remains is sprinting for third.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan311.png

And Kennaugh is just unstoppable! Van Heerden couldn’t even come close!

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan312.png

Behind them, it’s suprizingly Weissinger who takes third for Nvidia.

i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/mrlol_pcm/Man%20Game/Driedaagse%20de%20Panne%20Koksijde/pan313.png

So, going into the final time trial, the top 6 seems sure. The question is just, in which order will they finish?
