Beginning a new story with a custom team. January was done without screenshots and exporting results, but things will pick up after that.

Gateway Racing takes to the road
Gateway Computers, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and the California Milk Processor Board are proud to announce the formation of a new professional cycling team... Gateway Racing.
Gateway will be racing at the continental level this year, but looks to be building for a move to the Pro Tour in the near future. The team aggressively pursued a host of experienced riders from predominantly english speaking countries as well as signing some promising talents to build for future success.
The team will be very visible in US races, but also is looking to make themselves known in other races, especially in Australia, the British Isles and South Africa. The sponsor goals are as follows.
Noteable signees for the new team include:
Micheal Rogers - Australia
Mic is an extremely good stage racer and time trialist. He'll be counted on for a good result in the Tour of California, an important race for the sponsors.
Tyler Farrar - United States
Tyler is a promising up and coming sprinter. He'll be looked to for the important sprint races on our calendar, as well as stage wins and point titles in other races.
Nicholas Roche - Ireland
A good hilly rider with a solid sprint, Nicholas will focus mainly on one day hilly classics.
Other riders of interest:
With a large Australian base of riders, Gateway Racing will be visible early in the season, with a number of riders in both the time trial and road championships of Australia. Paperwork has been submitted for wildcard entry in the Tour Down Under as well, with promises that Michael Rogers will ride.

Australian National Championships - Time Trial
We're lucky in that Michael Rogers and Ben Day are both feeling very good coming into the season and are already starting to come into good form. With several supporting riders like Clarke, Vogels and Renshaw scouting out the route, we felt like we had a good handle on the course.
Day went out a road a great time... but ended up seconds behind Cadel Evans, Stuart O'Grady and Cameron Meyer.
Then Michael Rogers came and blew the field away by almost 30 seconds. A dominating ride to take the team's first win of the year in their first attempt.

Australian National Championships
Another sunny day down under, and the team's goal is to try to ride Michael Rogers into another championship jersey.
Unfortunately, Mic couldn't keep up with O'Grady when the leaders attacked. He settled in with Day helping him, but they couldn't catch up and we settled for 5th and 7th in the final rankings.

Tour Down Under
The national tour of Australia. We were asked to bring Micheal Rogers in order to recieve a wildcard to this event, and were happy to comply. Mic is using this to tune up for the Tour of California in February, a race we hope him to win. It's not a continental tour race, but we are very Australian in our makeup and want some good results.
Mark Renshaw was our sprinter, and got some decent top 5 finishes in a couple of stages.
The big coup was in stage 2, where Rogers made a brilliant late attack on a slight incline and barely managed to hold on for a stage win.
Stage 5 was disappointing. Nobody made a move on the hills, so we forced the action in hops of getting a gap on Tom Boonen and maybe earning a top 3 finish. Unfortunately, all we did was help Ballan get away and win the stage (and the race). We still got a very satisfying 5th place finish to start the year.
Jonathon Bellis also managed to win the Mountains Classification. He got in some breaks in the early stages and the rest of the points were spread amongst a large number of riders. 4 points won it for him (2 mountain sprint wins).

Grand Prix Cycliste La Marseillaise
This slightly hilly one day race isn't hugely important for us... we just need race days to get the team ready for California.
We brought a good squad with Rogers for team leader and Renshaw for the sprint if it comes down to that.
Early on a large break of 14 got away, but the gap never really got over 3 minutes. We tried really hard to get in the group but it just didn't happen.
While it hovered there... it didn't start coming down very quickly. We weren't doing much work, and maybe other teams expected us to since we weren't in the break.
It got down to 1:15 or so as the peloton was making its way up the last climb of the race, but we weren't gaining any ground. So we sent Rogers on an attack to see if he could bridge.
This woke the peloton up and they started chasing. As Mic closed in on the breakaway, the peloton stayed between 10 and 20 seconds back.
Finally Mic made contact on the downhill... but the finish was getting very close. Renshaw didn't have the energy to sprint so Rogers would be our only hope.
Rogers was in pretty good position as the leaders began to sprint. the group was just about to make contact with 1 km to go, Mic holding on to Jonathon Hivert's wheel.
But he couldn't get past Hivert. He managed to get third. In some ways it's good one of those who worked in the break all day got the win, but we were SOOO close.
Final Results:

A mostly flat sprint race, we're racing here mostly to build a little form for the Tour of California later in the month. Renshaw will be our primary sprint threat.
Youngster Taylor Phinney went away with the break today. This is his first race of the year and we're excited to see how the young talent develops.
The break was pulled back less then 3km from the finish. In short order several sprint trains formed. Renshaw is well positioned on the left, with Bellis two riders back.
As the sprint rounded the turn, Renshaw was well positioned... can he make the move to take the win in the final meters?
It was not to be. Mark took a nice podium place finishing third though, with Jonathon Bellis finishing a respectable 5th place.
My export of the results of this race got corrupted somehow. I'll stick a results screen shot in here soon. |

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca
This 5-day stage race starts with a couple of sprint stages and becomes somewhat hilly the last few days. Stage 1 is pancake flat and will almost definitely come down to a sprint.
The Gateway team is as follows:

Being so flat and short, we didn't take part in the break today. As the finish approached, both Bellis and Renshaw were well placed in separate trains.
But as it came to the line, neither could pass Martin Hebik... let alone big Thor Hushovd. Renshaw took third again though, with Bellis finishing fourth and wearing the young rider jersey tomorrow.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca - Stage 2
Another very flat stage that should come down to the sprinters.
A break got away with Gateway's Ben Day involved. He picked up some points, but Brent Bookwalter of BMC would wear the jersey when the day was done.
After the break was pulled in, Rogers led Renshaw out in the sprint, with Bellis fighting for a spot in the scrum.
But we started too early. Renshaw couldn't hold on and was passed by several sprinters. Bellis was able to ride to a nice 3rd place podium finish.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca - Stage 3
The hills toward the end are far enough away that a sprint finish is still likely. But the field should be narrowed down a bit, perhaps letting more of a puncheur win the stage.
If Rogers is feeling good, we may let him place an attack on the last hill and see what happens. If not, we'll just have him react to any other moves a favorite might make there.
A break went away (which included Gateway rider Phil Zajicek), but didn't amount to much. It was caught just before the final hill.
A move was made near the top of the hill which Rogers was able to counter. A group got away with riders like Cadel Evans, Thomas Dekker and others.
At the finish, Rogers was poorly positioned and didn't figure in the result. Alejandro Marque won the stage, followed by Josep Jufre and Cadel Evans.
Export caused crash, didn't get results. |

We are going to try to get a rider in the break again, and let Rogers try something on the final hill.
Chris Baldwin got into the break this time and picked up a fair amount of points in the mountains competition. He ended the day tied for the lead with 20 points, though not wearing the jersey.
The break still wasn't caught at the base of the final hill. Zajicek instigated an attack that some of the favorites followed... so Rogers went along too.
Zajicek hit the wall and Rogers attacked just as the chase group hit the original breakaway going up the hill. Only Popovych was able to go with him. This could be decisive...
Popo was faltering at the top of the hill, so Rogers turned it up another notch. He had opened a significant gap. Come on Mic... put the hammer down!
YES! Michael Rogers takes the stage win in commanding fashion and should have a solid lead going into the final stage.
But..
Wait...
You're kidding me.
The judges have decided that NO TIME GAP would be awarded.
All we can say is... pathetic decision by the race judges. Simply deplorable.
Still, Mic was able to celebrate a stage win in style.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca - Stage 5
Not as hilly as the last stage, but maybe Rogers can get some seconds and take the win. We need to get Baldwin in the break for points too.
Baldwin was able to get away, and was able to easily wrap up the mountains classification.
There were frequent short attacks and feints at the front. A small lead group formed, with Rogers, Day, Zajicek and Phinney present. Looking good so far.
Dekker attacked near the summit of the final rise and Rogers went with him, passing and pushing toward the finish.
But the downhill allowed a group of riders to catch them... unfortunately including race leader Marque. Rogers would have to beat him to the line and finish top 3 to take the race.
But Mic had used too much up trying to keep the lead from the last summit, and had nothing left for the sprint. Marque ended up winning the stage... and the race. Rogers finished 2nd... but deep down we feel like if stage 4 had been judged correctly it would have been a win.
Baldwin was able to celebrate a great mountains jersey win though.

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 1
The Tour of California is one of our major goals for this season. We've been working hard getting a team ready to go and making sure they are in form.
Our leader and hope for the overall win is Michael Rogers. Mic has been riding excellent in the early part of this season, winning the Ausie TT, placing 5th in the Tour Down Under and finishing 2nd in the Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca.
Our sprinter is Mark Renshaw yet again. He's been solid so far, but has yet to get a victory. Perhaps we can work something out here.
Christopher Baldwin has been given freedom in this race, perhaps he can get a breakaway win or pick up the mountains jersey.

The opening prologue of this race is short, but seconds often matter. Renshaw put up a suprisingly good time that held up for quite a while until Jimmy Engoulvent took it. Our own Mic Rogers then took the top spot...
but Spartacus had yet to ride.
It was close as Cancellera came in... but Mic finished four seconds ahead, and got the jersey for the day!

Hmmmm I think i may know where the inspiration for that jersey came from (Besides maybe Milram =p)
I worked and raced at a race called "The Tour Of America's Dairyland" in Wisconsin primarily around Milwaukee, and the Winner of each stage that got a jersey that looks as such:
And the winner of the overall ended up getting a yellow version of the same jersey
I actually still have one of each of those jerseys laying around if i can find em heh. Just thought it was interesting to note the comparison though.

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 2
A few bumps, but purely a sprinter stage. The goals for today are to protect Rogers and setup Renshaw for the sprint. We'll worry about mountain points later in the race.
The break never really formed, it kept getting pulled back by other teams without us even having to make an effort. Mic's legs were outstanding today (+5), and even though it wasn't decisive terrain, he made a go of it with 7km to go.
But it wasn't meant to be... he was brought back in 250 meters from the line by the lead sprinters. Renshaw was in the mix but took 3rd yet again behind Simjens and Van Hummel.
Cancellera had sneakily picked up some bonus seconds during the stage, but thanks to time gained from the finish, Renshaw took the leaders jersey. Rogers switched instead to the points jersey. An odd reversal of what one might expect.

Just an odd coincidence... but I'm so impressed by that I'm going to change the last name of one of my young talents to "Shifty" in your honor. I have to find one of those jerseys now. |
