Sprick and Trentin led over the first climb, with Marco Pinotti 3rd, not too far behind. Pinotti would rejoin them soon enough.
The peleton narrowed down to around 36, with Tom Danielson, Sergio Paulinho, Cyril Dessel, Sandy Casar and Kim Kirchen some of the absentees. Caiss d'Epargne seemd to be a having a good day though as their sprinters, and hopeless climbers: Richeze and Perez Arriete, were still in the front group.
There was sad news for Ag2r though as yesterday's crach victim Luca Mazzanti is injured and suffering today, his top 10 finish is slowly slipping away from him.
The break was caught with 27km to go and 13km to the top of the climb. Simoni still fancied his chances of finishing 2nd and launched an attack. When things settled down, he was being chased by Cunego, Piepoli and the surprise package of the Giro: Guerini. Danilo di Luca, to Simoni's delight, was not doing too well:
Simoni led over the summit:
His win was guaranteed but he needed as much time on Di Luca as possible.
Cunego took 2nd, Piepoli 3rd, Guerrini 4th and Di Luca 5th.
Lets not forget Mazzanti, his top 10, and even his top 15 hopes crushed in yesterday's crash:

Simoni now leads Di Luca by 40 seconds, can he hold on in tomorrow's 40km time trial? Di Luca needs a second for every kilometre.

Damiano Cunego is credited as leading the young riders classification, but it is Andy Schleck who leads the way. (Cunego is too old).
Meanwhile theres been a dramatic change in the teams since last posted. If you remember Lampre had a comfortable lead over Liquigas, with Caisse 4 seconds behind Liquigas. Well now its Caisse d'Epargne who lead the teams, 40 seconds ahead of Liquigas and numerous minutes ahead of 3rd place Lampre.
