Paris - Nice - Stage 2
fenian_1234
Stage 2

It's a little bumpy in places, but this stage should see a shootout between the sprinters. The stage favorites according to the bookies are Davis, Serebriakov and Borghesi.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_01.jpg

After the terrible weather yesterday, the riders are happy to set out on the 180k ride under a beautiful bright blue sky.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_02.jpg

There are attacks galore in the opening kilometers, but with Virgin, BA, Sic, Walmart and American Suzuki driving things along on the front they all come to nothing.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_03.jpg

Wild card team Walmart are active and trying to make an impression on the race, and it's Hivert who instigates the move that sticks.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_04.jpg

A big group of 14 riders are away. Zampieri, Mangel, Knees, Geslin, Hivert, Ongarato, Brammeier, Flens, Butterfield, Deignan, Mironov, Pate, Mugerli and Lund are in the break and have a chance of stage glory perhaps?

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_05.jpg

With the lead back to the pack at just under four minutes the escapees battle it out for the first intermediate sprint. Hivert of Walmart is the fastest, team-mate Butterfield second and Eurosport's Deignan third.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_06.jpg

Back in the peloton the pace is beginning to pick up a little as the break goes through the King of the Mountains sprint. It is uncontested, and Zampieri takes it and the jersey just in front of Danny Pate.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_07.jpg

69k to go and the break have a lead of 4"19. Christian Knees jumps first at the day's second and final intermediate sprint and is strong enough to hold on for the points. Mangel is second and Mugerli third.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_08.jpg

The break still have around 4 minutes at the 40k mark. At 30k it is 3 minutes and as the escapees go under the 20k to go banner they still have 2"02. There is a chance they will make it.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_09.jpg

But, the pace back in the pack is high and the gap continues to come down.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_10.jpg

10k to go it is at around 50 seconds and the strongmen remaining in the break give it one last throw of the dice.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_11.jpg

The sprinters are not going to let this one go and as the riders go under the 5k to go banner, the game for the escapees is clearly up. Zampieri is the last of the break to be caught.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_12.jpg

2.5k to go and the sprint is off. Cyril Gautier has a gap and is going for it. Behind him, Martijn Maaskant is leading out Bernhard Eisel for the Walmart team. Over on the left Aulas is winding it up for Domina.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_13.jpg

Can Gautier hold them off? We don't think so as behind him, Maaskant looks to be giving Eisel a perfect lead out. It looks like Pedersen has Eisel's wheel, and Samuel Dumoulin has began his charge behind Gautier.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_14.jpg

But Eisel waits to come around and coming under the 1k to go banner, it is Dumoulin who is showing the greater kick today. Maybe only Aulas is capable of stopping him now?

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_15.jpg

He looks as if he might have the strength to hold on. Behind him though, the other sprinters are hitting top speed.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_16.jpg

It is too little too late - and Samuel Dumoulin wins the shoot out between the fastmen. Eisel is second and Pedersen third.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_02_17.jpg

All of the contenders for the overall come home safely in the pack.
