I tried to get my sprinter to follow a pretty good rider when it came to the sprint. None of my own riders where there so I had to get on the wheel of someone else, I chose the guy with the green jersey. My rider was inches away from him and I told him to follow him in the same second that I could do so. His effort was set to 99. I can see that there is a train forming behind my guy and he is following the lead man. Suddenly, he just stops following. He moves just to the right and let the people behind him follow the green jersey. We are about 8-9km from the finishline and I need someones back quick! So I pick the nearest sprinter with his back exposed (he was just 1-2 meter infront of me), but my guy doesnt follow. In fact, he doesnt follow anyone.
He was set to agressive, effort to 99, just as good on the flats as everyone else and he was in great shape. Therefor I ask... what happend? :S |

How much energy (green, yellow and red) did he have left? |

His energy was full (all bars).
His sprintstats were about 69, he was following someone with 72-73. |

When you tell a rider to follow in a wheel for a sprint (->S) he can lose that wheel. When you see that ->S dissappearing next to his box, he has lost the wheel. He'll drop back if you don't react quickly. Safest imo is pausing as soon as you see it go away, try again, unpause, see if he can hold it. If it doesn't work on a certain rider I look for other options.
A rider is more succesful at holding a wheel when his sprint stat is higher. 69 is decent but it's not a real sprinter so in a mass sprint he has less chance of succeeding in it I'd say. In a sprint with a small group it would matter less. |

The sprint stat doesn't inluence if he can or not folllow other wheel... For example when is sprint between GC contenders, it's not problem for my climber with sprint stat 60 to follow some other with sprint 72... The only problem is that he can't pass him then.... |

Yeah, it's strange...if the rider hold the wheel and has a lot of energy, there is no reason to leave it... |

Hmm... maybe I should punish him by entering him in a horrific mountain stage |

I have had the same problem, and with a good sprinter like Luca Paolini too. I always figured it was due to 'lost concentration' or something and was part of the game.
Ive lost heaps of sprints i could have one because of it |

Like I said, if the ->S icon dissappears then he lost the wheel, if he still has good energy levels then that is probably because another ride has won the fight over that wheel and pushed your rider away. |
