Welcome to the second stage of the race. Today we are going over three small Col's that will ensure that the mountain jersey will change hands. The last two Col's, Taillude and Gratteloup, are both worth 16 points each. But other than that, it will most likely come down to a sprint finish.
The attacks start up the first slope. Team Ultimate's Stoltz are the man to take the first 6 points.
From behind six riders attack including the man of the dots, Sobal (NOS) and the current joint number 2 in the competition Van Zandbeek (Ultimate). Other riders include Vital, Terpstra, Lasri and Sampaio.
But the latter six are caught leaving only Stoltz in the front with a three minute advantage as he hits the foot of the second climb today.
The break casually lets Stoltz take the 16 points meaning he is now leading the mountains classification with 24 points while Sobal got 16.
The back though a sprint occurs for the latter points which Del Nero wins in front of Vital. Sobal was pitiful in that sprint.
So after two cols today we got the following situation:
1 - Stoltz - 24 pts
2 - Del Nero - 16 pts
3 - Sobal - 16 pts
But major news comes from behind: A split in the peloton!
Its too early to say who is in which group, but they are equally sized and Benoit Sinner is expected to be in the front group.
It was never a serious split though. It lasted for 10 kilometers and potentially hurt some helpers but overall everyone seems fine.
Up in the front though with 60 to go, Stoltz approaches the last climb with 3'30" advantage.
It comes to no surprise that Stoltz takes the final 16 points.
But in the back seven riders are dropped!
Sobal with the dotted jersey cant keep up doing the climb!
Other losers include: Vital and Pardilla (Energie-Diesel), Van Zandbeek, Jeanneson and Rajala (Ultimate) and Butterfield (Wal-Mart).
It should be added that upfront Del Nero attacked and took second on the climb, thus also putting him second in the competition.
AND THEN A CRASH! Its Energie-Diesel who lose their sprinter Corioni. The other casualty appears to be Bas Gilling.
No less than 4 Energie-Diesel riders are down to get him but have already lost 2 minutes putting him behind the group of dropped people from before.
But with 47 to go they should come back up in time.
In the front some minor attacks are happening by the hand of Sampaio (Benfica), Valentino China (!) (Wal-Mart) and Kunshin (Irn Bru) who can smell that Stoltz is about to get pulled in.
25 to go and it is over for Stoltz.
Much to the panic of Energie-Diesel, Corioni and his horde of helpers are three minutes the pack and they dont look like they will come back up.
EIGHT KILOMETERS TO GO AND ANOTHER SPLIT! THE WIND HAVE TORN THE PACK IN TWO AGAIN!
The casualties are big here: BMC's Calzati. Jack Wolfskin's Kirchen. Wal-Mart's Marquez. M&M's Rutkiewicz. Irn Bru's Lewis and some of their better helpers.
It have also come to our attention that Energie-Diesel's Torres (76 MO) and Pardilla (76 MO) and in the grupetto trying to help Corioni up. Their race is over im afraid.
3 to go and another split: The sprinters have simply torn themselves out of the front group. All the sprinters you expect to be there are there.
And the sprint is opened with 1200 meters to go and Ventoso, Clarke and Neves have gotten away from everyone with a massive acceleration. Even Sinner is a long distance behind.
And it ends like the picture above: The day belongs to Ventoso from Santander ahead of Clarke, Neves, Sinner and Forero.
In an amazing display of stupidity, the race organizer chose not to recognize the gaps that occured doing the stage, thus making very little difference.
