This 25 km long time trial may be the very last chance for the GC riders to make a difference - and it's definitely going to be interesting now that the World ITT Champion, David Zabriskie, lost his leader's shirt on Stage 5. You also have to consider the fact that there's some pretty nasty hills on the time trial.
Not very surprisingly, Ford, placed 146th overall, was the first to set a proper time: 37'12. But shortly before he reached the finish, both Kovalev and Stannard had beaten his intermediate time, proving that you also have to be rather good in hills/mountains if you want to win this time trial.
At the finish, Stannard proved that he had kept the pace high as he managed to beat Ford's time by 8 seconds. His time didn't last for long, though, as Kovalev surprisingly managed to cut off 3 seconds. Van Winden came close just a few minutes later, 1 second slower than Kovalev.
Kovalev's time ended up being the top time for quite a while. Kittel came close by 3 seconds - but if Kovalev thought he would win, a French duo of Coppel and Bonnet definitely ruined that dream. Bonnet was the first to beat Kovalev's time (by 9 seconds), and shortly after, Coppel completely destroyed any challenge by doing the course 1 minute faster than Bonnet.
Kreuziger, Posthuma and Millar all did reasonably well with Posthuma being the most remarkable, coming in 2nd 29 seconds after Coppel. But Phinney was the first to really challenge Coppel's time. On the intermediate check, he was 9 seconds after Coppel, and unfortunately for him, he lost two more seconds on his way to the finish line.
Nibali who still had dreams of winning the race had to do an amazing time trial to complete his goal, and he did do quite well on the first check, coming in 26 seconds after Coppel. But more importantly, Zabriskie was determined to get his leader's shirt back! On the first check, he was 1st 11 seconds ahead of Coppel. And Boom was just as determined to keep it. On the first time check, he was 5th, 38 seconds after Zabriskie.
At the finish line, Zabriskie had almost doubled his advantage to Coppel, beating him with 21 seconds. If the same logic applied to Boom's performance, Zabriskie would now be back in yellow.
Before getting the result, Kashechkin passed the line, coming in 7th, 1'16 after Zabriskie. And Boom? Well, he fought for it.
