On paper, this 2nd stage of Tour of California is a stage for the sprinters - such as Vantomme, Chicchi, Loddo, Brea and whoever of other sprinters who are present at this race.
As expected, a break was allowed to go at the start of the race, more specifically on the first (rather tough) hill: Krivtsov, Kinney, Devine and Capecchi - although it took a while to convince Capecchi to cooperate with the other riders.
At the first intermediate sprint, Devine had to let go. But at c the same time, the peloton started using the gas pedal - especially Wikipedia who have their team leader and race leader, David Zabriskie, to protect. And with 60 km to go, Devine was caught.
Capecchi kept going, though, and in the end, he was rewarded with the first and only mountain points of this stage. He therefore takes the shirt.
Behind, several riders had been dropped. The entire Unicef team with the exception of Clerc had been dropped, perhaps to help their best placed rider, Finning. Stage favourite Brea from Festina also had to let go along with Theo Bos, Alex Rasmussen and more.
In front, it was still Wikipedia leading to catch Capecchi and Kinney who with 50 km to go had a gap of 1'15. Despite not getting much help from other teams, they managed to decrease the gap, and with 32 km to go, the riders were caught.
With 3 km to go, the sprint started. But either because of the tough hills, or because of the hill ratings, the sprinters started far behind, leaving Gautier, Aulas, Coyot and Ladagnous at the front with a reasonable gap down to the peloton.
With 1 km to go, Aulas is ahead by a lot. Gautier is 2nd, Coyot 3rd. Lars Bak is leading the peloton with Reynes, Santambrogio and Ladanous behind him.
But Aulas's gap is impossible to close, and he takes the win ahead of Bak, Santambrogio and Reynes.
