8 riders went clear, originally with 2 holding a gap over 6 others. This held to the 1st sprint as Boonratanathanakorn took it ahead of Jeannesson
The groups then merged, with Costa, Tendero, Nydam, Keisse, Devenyns and Hansen making it 8 - although as his teammate is the race leader, Hansen was not relaying
Keisse took the next sprint but was pipped by Tendero at the 3rd
The break was to be caught though - despite Tendero and Hansen breaking away from the other 6 near the end, it was all together going into the final 10km.
8.5km to go and Crash! Its a Vespa rider .. its Basso!
Nozal and Terciado are amongst the other GC contenders to go down.
The control riders have been observing 8 riders today (Van Heerden, Markov, Grillo, Dekkers, Gasparotto, Haedo, Napolitano and Haidar Anuawar) and the clear consensus is that Haedo is the man to watch today - on a +5 form. However, he seems insistent on following Andrew Hunt his canadian teammate who isnt really a good enough lead out man.
Gasparotto however is, as he pulls Awang clear
Too much too soon for the 2nd stage in a row though and the Olympus duo fade as the sprint begins
Borrajo powers away, with Grillo tucked in
The gap is big but as Grillo waits, the gap shortens as Goss and Van Heerden close in
Grillo goes now at last, head to head with Goss
And Grillo takes the win! (On a +1 day)
He takes the yellow jersey but all hopes of a yellow jersey seem to be gone for Ivan Basso now, who lost 3 minutes after the crash in a group led in by teammate Mark Scanlon
