Does this look like a mountain stage to you? It does to me, but it obviously cant be as it has been given a flat rating. Therefore either Bennati/Hushovd will win, McEwen will come 2nd and Haedo 3rd!
Anthony Geslin leads over the big climb, a group of 46 remains behind him. Nibali and Piepoli attack to take 2nd and 3rd in the KoM points. The sprinters left in the main group are Paolo Bettini and Daniele Bennati ( !).
Perez Cuapio is one of two top 10 riders who have been dropped. (When Bennati has not!!). Guerini is in the group behind Perez Cuapio. The group also contains Michael Rogers, Thor Hushovd, Allan Davis, Sandy Casar and Bradley Wiggins. Robbie McEwen was dropped by this group very close to the summit while Haedo, Richeze and Hunter are further back and may have to give up on any stage hopes today.
Perez Cuapio and Bertogliati made it back in the descent but was dropped yet again on the next climb.
Nibali is now the solo leader with Geslin long gone. The pack behind splits in the descend with 14 riders being dropped. They included Parra, Plaza and Cardenas.
Things go from bad to worse for T-Mobile as Caucchioli goes down, causing Kirchen to crash. They are passed by the Cofidis led group you can see and join Lovkvist and Geslin. Still - at least theyre ahead of Perez Cuapio!
Were at the final climb now and the peleton are soon down to 21. Liquigas' Bertagnolli drops off and we finally see Daniele Bennati in trouble! Valjavec and Figueras drop back to help him, leaving Cunego teammateless in the front group. Nibali is still looking good up front.
So Nibali leads over the top. Bettini pips Piepoli for 2nd place. No more riders are dropped, but Bennatti is now long gone, I think he ran out of energy! Maglia Rosa Danilo di Luca is forced to set the pace up front to chase down Nibali - although Luis Leon Sanchez comes up to help him as Caisse still have Simoni and Gutierrez Palacios.
The chase never really was on and despite losing a minute due to the fact that there was a sprint for 2nd, Nibali wins!
