Its time to find out who has been bluffing and who could have a chance of winning the Giro, with the Maglia Rosa almost certain to fall onto the shoulders of today's winner. Thor Hushovd made the most of the jersey with a stage win, but his time is up.

With 9km to the top, the attacks began - but noone expected Giusseppe Guerini to be the first to go. Plaza followed, then Cunego and soon all the big names had attacked.

The devil game the 'Killer' some words of advice, and told him how he could shake off Piepoli, Cunego, Schleck and Plaza. Simoni was leading the chase behind in a group that would eventually become 10.

Plaza was the only one to be dropped before the sprint and Di Luca led from the front to take a victory. Cunego took 2nd, Piepoli 3rd, and Schleck hit red at the finish, but still managed 4th.
