Have primarily lurked around this site for the past year or two mainly reading other people's stories and enjoying them immensely. Figured I'd finally try and post my own story. Don't know how much interest there will be in a PCM 2007 story given it is a couple of versions ago but will give it a go.
I've been playing a career as manager of the Discovery Channel Pro Racing Team and am about to start the 2013 season. I'll start from January 2013 with reference throughout the season to how the team has fared in previous seasons. I am using PCM Spain and racing in Hard mode.
Unfortunately I don't have huge amounts of time to painstakingly write stories (plus I've never done this before so will be a bit of an experiment). Therefore, what I will very likely do is write short summaries of non-key races and post screeshots only of key (UCI Pro Tour) races. Otherwise, I strongly suspect I won't be able to see the story though.
Hopefully people will bear with me on the written/screenshot split.
EDIT: Story off to a great start; I don't even know what season I am in. Title should read Discovery 2013 as I am actually starting the 2013 season. Modifying what I have posted thus far to reflect this.

Background
Discovery Channel Pro Cycling is coming off of a head scratching 2012 season. The team did much better than expected in the classics taking the top spot at La Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège as well as the cobblestone classics of Ronde van Vlaanderen, Gent-Wevelgem and Paris-Roubaix. This is a stark contast to the seasons of 2007-2011 where Discovery won Paris-Roubaix once with no success at all in the other classics.
On the other hand, Discovery came up empty handed in the grand tours. The team performed well at the Giro d'Italia taking 2nd and 5th place. However, at the TDF where Discovery has dominated in prior seasons, the best we could manage was an anemic 13th place. At the Vuelta, where we've generally done reasonably well, we grabbed a 7th place finish.
The result has been a bit of a shake-up with long-time leader Alberto Contador leaving the team. Also gone are key American members of the team: David Zabriskie has retired and an aging Tom Danileson has been released. Tom Rohregger, who was our leader at the Vuelta last season, has been sold to Quickstep.
This season promises to be a bit of a challenge as Discovery struggled to bring in a good supporting staff for the grand tours. On the other hand, we have a strong cobblestone team and are overweight with sprinters (much more than I would like to be and a couple will be headed out after this season).
Team Presentation
Leaders
Andy Schleck: With Contador leaving, we have brought in Andy Schleck to replace him (thanks to Cya logic Schleck sat out 2012 unsigned while Contador will do the same this season). Andy will be our main hope at the TDF.
Heinrich Haussler: Haussler is a threat as a sprinter and in the hills. Last season he provided our lone bright spot at the TDF, taking the sprinters jersey and winning two stages. He also finished second at La Flèche Wallonne and took the points jersey at the Deutschland-Tour.
Key Cyclers
Mark Cavendish: Mark has been with Discovery for several seasons but after a poor 2012 he decided to leave. Thanks to Cya logic, nobody was interested in signing him and he ultimately came back to Discovery. as a last minute addition, he will play a lesser role than in past seasons but still will work with Haussler to try and take the green jersey at the TDF.
Ivan Rovny: Rovny has evolved into a force at the hilly classics. His season started very strong last season, taking La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège before missing much of the rest of the season with injury. He did return in time to finish second at the Tour de Pologne.
John-Lee Augustyn: Augustyn has been our guy at the Giro for the past two seasons and has twice in a row finished second to Mauricio Soler. We thought he had it last season only to be blown away by Soler in the closing stages. He will once again lead us out at the Giro this season.
Jason Donald: Jason is a new arrival to make sure we maintain an American presence in the team (which is getting more and more difficult each season). While far from one of the strongest in the world, Jason looks likely to be our leader at the Vuelta.
Frederik Nolf: Nolf is our leader for the cobblestone races. He heads a very strong cobblestone team which helped him to a clean sweep of the Pro Tour cobblestone races in 2012. We'll see if he can do it again in 2013.
Other Team Members
Mauricio Ardila: In the twilight of his career, Ardila joins to help the cause at the Vuelta.
Fumiyuki Beppu: Long-time member of Discovery, still a valuable member of the team.
Lars Boom: Joined Discovery last season after failing to realize his potential with Rabobank Continental. Still developing but promises to be a strong Cobblestone rider.
Ruben Cantoni: A 20-year old new pro. Will start slow this season, helping where he can.
Elia Casanova: 23-years old and already developing into a force in the moutains. Took 5th at the Giro last season.
John Devine: Left Discovery after 2007 and languished for several seasons before returning in 2011. Just now starting to develop into a quality cyclist.
Tyler Farrar: Joins this season to wrap up the American contingent.
Romain Feillu: Extremely disappointing career with Discovery and will likely be gone after this season.
Oier Garcia Viveros: Another new pro, looks promising in the mountains. Will be brought along slowly.
Linus Gerdemann: A helper in the TDF.
Thierry Lamborelle: Slowly brought along in the team and emerging into a strong helper at the cobblestone races.
Bjorn Leukemans: Twilight of his career, but still strong help on the cobblestones.
Thomas Lovkvist: Has never lived up to the promise but a solid helper at the grand tours and leader for second level races.
Jesus Mariani: Young 22-year old cyclist who has emerged as a leading helper at the Vuelta. Actually finished in 7th, ahead of the team leader at the 2012 Vuelta.
Gianni Meersman: Strong cobblestone racer and useful on hills.
Maxime Monfort: Like Lovkvist, has never met the potential but is a strong helper in the TDF.
Kristoffer Nielsen: Beginning to develop into a strong contributor on cobblestones.
Yaroslav Popovych: Had a golden year in 2007 for Discovery, then left and has never been the same. Returned in 2012 and will help at the TDF.
Markus Reich: Young German beginning to develop into one of the top time trialers. Could challenge at the Worlds this season.
Luigi Sestili: Another solid time trialers and a useful rider at the Giro.
Zhou Sui: Fantastic young sprinter from China. Had a somewhat rough 2012, although did win the Vuelta Ciclista a la Rioja. Looking to bounce back this season.
Juan Van Heerden: Rounds out our ridiculous wealth of sprinters. Still developing but showed promise at the Vuelta last season.
Brian Vandborg: Another long-time member of the team but won't be around much longer with the development of Reich and Sestili.

Season Goals
Win Paris-Nice
Win Giro d'Italia
Finish in the top 3 at Volta Ciclista a Catalunya
Win Tour de France
Three-Star Races:
Vuelta Ciclista a la Rioja
Paris-Nice
Two-Star Races:
Giro d'Italia
Volta Ciclista a Catalunya
One-star Races:
Liege-Bastogne-Liege
Vuelta a Espana
Not sure why the TDF is a goal but not a starred race, but that is Cyanide for you I guess.
One thing I should have noted previously, I do sim some races (primarily secondary races during a Pro Tour race or early season, meaningless warm-ups).

Looks interesting, especially the fact that you have Nolf in your team. Maybe we'll see what he could've been capable of if it wasn't for the tragic happening in the Tour of Qatar this year.
I don't really know much about him anyway.
Seems intresting though, can we see the stats of the riders? |

Top Riders
Quick look at some of the top riders going into the 2013 season:
Thomas Dekker (Rabobank): Dekker left Rabobank after the 2007 season and joined Discovery Channel where he developed into a top rider, including winning the 2010 Tour de France. When Discovery could no longer afford him, he joined Lampre in 2012 only to return to Rabobank this season. Dekker won his second Tour de France last season in astonishing form with second place finishing more than 8 minutes behind. He went on to finish the season as the top ranked rider in the UCI Pro Tour and will be looking for more this season.
Edvald Boasson Hagen (Rabobank): Hagen joins Rabobank this season from Wiesenhof. Last season he actually rode in all three grand tours and fared quite well with a number of stage wins and 2nd-10th place finishes. He's a complete threat able to compete in almost any race.
Humberto Amilcar (Caisse d'Epargne: A young Portuguese racer who emerged as a force last season winning the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya and finishing in the top 10 at the Tour de Romandie, Tour de Suisse and numerous other races. Strong on the mountains and excellent at time trials, he will compete for a grand tour title for the first time this season.
Benat Intxausti (Saunier Duval): Pushed to a top 10 finish in the Tour de France last season to go with top 10 finishes in other races as well. Looks primed to make a run at a grand tour win this season.
Bauke Mollema (Ceramica Panaria): Leader of a surprisingly strong Ceramica team this season. Was a strong force at the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de France last season and, with help, could win the TDF this year.
Luca Zanesca (Saunier Duval): A top 10 finish at the Tour de France last season and is even better this season. Will be back to try and win this time although could opt to go for the Giro.
Robert Gesink (Astana): Second place at the Tour de France last season (distant second to Dekker). He's hungary for another crack.
Maxim Belkov (Caisse d'Epargne) A disappointing 2012 in his first season with Caisse but still managed a top 10 at the Tour de France. Capable of much more.
Riccardo Ricco (T-Mobile): Tailed off in his first season with T-Mobile but still a strong racer and capable of winning the Giro.
Chris Froome (Lampre): 5th place at the Tour de France last season, will be in the mix again.
Mirdjalol Mitodorov (Astana): Outstanding young Kazakh climber. Can win smaller tours but needs to improve time trial before he's ready to win the Grand Tours.
Sergio Pardilla (Rabobank): Third place at the Tour de France last season following a Vuelta win in 2011. May return to the Vuelta this season with Dekker now on the team.
Mauricio Soler (Caisse d'Epargne): Back-to-back Giro titles and no signs of slowing down.
Javier Moreno (Caisse d'Epargne): Last seasons Vuelta winner. Can he defend his title?

January Schedule
We'll have a light January schedule which serves primarily as a warm-up to our February races - notably the Tour of San Francisco:
16/1: Down Under Classic
17/1-21/1: Tour Down Under
We'll be sending a single team to Australia to compete in both races as follows:
Leader: Mark Cavendish - I don't expect him to run away with the sprints as his fitness is poor, but he has been invited by the sponsors and is being paid for his attendance at the Tour Down Under.
Sprinter: Tyler Farrar - Prepping for the Tour of California
Free: Fumiyuki Beppu
Free: Markus Reich
Teammates:
Jason Donald - Warm up for the Tour of California wihere he will be going for the win.
Oier Garcia Viveros - First taste of pro racing
Juan Van Heerden - Lead out for Cavendish
Brian Vandborg
Down Under Classic
Past Winners:
2007: Simon Clarke - SouthAustralia.com
2008: John Murphy - Health Net
2009: Elia Rigotto - Milram
2010: Pablo Lastras - Barloworld
2011: Alex Rasmussen - Credit Agricole
2012: Said Haddou - Unibet
I did not attend this race as I was busy getting the team card tuned up for the Tour Down Under start the following day. After the race I heard that it came down to a mass sprint and that Mark Cavendish took the win despite his poor fitness.
Good to get the season started with a win, even if it is a fairly meaningless race.

Stage 1
The break of the day consisted of 7 riders and reached a lead of as much as 7'03" with 108km to go. Looking for another win, we sent Beppu, Donald, Garcia Viveros and Reich forward to reel the break back in.
The break was caught with 20km remaining in the race so it would be a mass sprint finish. Van Heerden acted as lead out man for Cavendish but did not have enough in the tank to pull him forward on his own. Luckily he caught the wheel of Capecchi but both Van Heerden and Cav lost a lot of energy in the process. When the sprint began, Cav noticed Stephane Vrillard looking strong and caught his wheel. With 0.8 km to go, Cav made his move. Capecchi was too far ahead but it looked like Cav might get around Vrillard and Boy Van Poppel. Unfortuately he quick ran out of gas and only managed to finish 5th.
Capecchi crosses the line to win the stage followed by Vrillard and Van Poppel

The one thing that is frustrating about playing so long a career is that the database has never been tested to see what will happen and therefore you get some odd occurences. Case in point, the profile for this years Vuelta just came out. Stage 21 is a long time trial. Makes the final day of the Vuelta interesting I suppose, but not consistent with reality. |

Stage 2: Mannum - Hahndorf
An early break gets away and we manage to get Fumiyuki Beppu in it. Beppu is going after the large number of mountain points available today as well as an outside shot of taking the stage.
Beppu takes the points over the top of the first hill with a stunning view
The breaks lead hits 5'46" when the peloton reacts, lead by Predictor-Lotto defending the lead. As word of the peloton picking up the pace reaches the break, a series of attacks occurs. Abdelkader Belmokhtar finally manges to get away and Beppu decides to launch an attack to catch him.
Beppu catches Belmokhtar and the two beginning working together
Beppu and Belmokhtar up the pace and extend their lead over the remaining riders in the break. In fact, they push such a hard pace that the peloton, feeling the effects of early season lack of fitness, struggles to close the gap and over the top of each hill, looks more and more strung out.
With 20km to go, the peloton finally catches Beppu and Belmokhtar but not before Beppu has racked up enough mountain points to move into the KOM jersey.
The peloton eventually catches the break but not before being run ragged
Over the final hill, the peloton is looking ragged and quite strung out. Cavendish is well positioned near the front, however it is a downhill finish and he is unable to take advantage of his speed. The result is a good win by Aidis Kruopis who will move into the overall lead. Cavendish finishes 12th.
Kruopis gets a nice win

Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully I can keep it interesting.
I don't think that'll be a problem, the fact that its 2013 makes it interesting enough... |

Stage 3: Stirling-Victor Harbor
Beppu tries to go with the early break in order to defend his KOM jersey but to no avail as the break is hauled back in.
Beppu looking good in red
The peloton set a relatively high pace, not letting any breaks get away until a mini-break of 4 was attempted with 65 km to go in the stage. Ultimately a group of 3 formed up. They never get more than a 1'30" lead though and are easily hauled back in 30 km from the line.
The days break - they did not accomplish much
The Discovery Channel sprinters were not looking their best today after the final climb. Van Heerden has nothing in the tank and cannot lead out. Cavendish and Farrar both struggle to catch a wheel for the mass sprint as as it starts, Cavendish is not in good position.
Cavendish poorly placed for the sprint
Capecchi looks very strong in the sprint today and wins it easily. Cavendish can only manage a disappointing 15th. Beppu retains his KOM jersey.
Capecchi wins easily
Thought I exported the results, but apparently not. |
